Book excerpt: The U.S. role in the world refers to the overall character, purpose, or direction of U.S. participation in international affairs and the country's overall relationship to the rest of the world. The U.S. role in the world can be viewed as establishing the overall context or framework for U.S. policymakers for developing, implementing, and measuring the success of U.S. policies and actions on specific international issues, and for foreign countries or other observers for interpreting and understanding U.S. actions on the world stage. While descriptions of the U.S. role in the world since the end of World War II vary in their specifics, it can be described in general terms as consisting of four key elements: global leadership; defense and promotion of the liberal international order; defense and promotion of freedom, democracy, and human rights; and prevention of the emergence of regional hegemons in Eurasia. The issue for Congress is whether the U.S. role in the world is changing, and if so, what implications this might have for the United States and the world. A change in the U.S. role could have significant and even profound effects on U.S. security, freedom, and prosperity. It could significantly affect U.S. policy in areas such as relations with allies and other countries, defense plans and programs, trade and international finance, foreign assistance, and human rights. Some observers, particularly critics of the Trump Administration, argue that under the Trump Administration, the United States is substantially changing the U.S. role in the world. Other observers, particularly supporters of the Trump Administration, while acknowledging that the Trump Administration has changed U.S. foreign policy in a number of areas compared to policies pursued by the Obama Administration, argue that under the Trump Administration, there has been less change and more continuity regarding the U.S. role in the world. Some observers who assess that the United States under the Trump Administration is substantially changing the U.S. role in the world-particularly critics of the Trump Administration, and also some who were critical of the Obama Administration-view the implications of that change as undesirable. They view the change as an unnecessary retreat from U.S. global leadership and a gratuitous discarding of long-held U.S. values, and judge it to be an unforced error of immense proportions-a needless and self-defeating squandering of something of great value to the United States that the United States had worked to build and maintain for 70 years. Other observers who assess that there has been a change in the U.S. role in the world in recent years-particularly supporters of the Trump Administration, but also some observers who were arguing even prior to the Trump Administration in favor of a more restrained U.S. role in the world-view the change in the U.S. role, or at least certain aspects of it, as helpful for responding to changed U.S. and global circumstances and for defending U.S. interests. Congress's decisions regarding the U.S role in the world could have significant implications for numerous policies, plans, programs, and budgets, and for the role of Congress relative to that of the executive branch in U.S. foreign policymaking.

Book excerpt: In a summary of present day social and economic conditions, Beh-Aharon points out the dire consequences of America ignoring its obligations as set forth in the Declaration of Independence. He goes on to explain how the destructive effects of globalisation can be stopped, and progressive social structures introduced. Using a concept developed by Rudolf Steiner -- the actualization of the individual -- he explains how the world arrived at its current state and how an understanding of America's role in the globalisation process will help achieve cultural and spiritual freedom, political equality and economic cooperation in the world.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: We are constantly reminded that the United States is the greatest country in the world--even the greatest country in the history of civilization! Most agree that America is the most exceptional and most privileged nation on Earth. Presidents proclaim it and politicians remind us. Some believe this land was ordained by God to be the most dominant influence throughout the world. These are bold claims indeed. The United States of America is certainly a powerful, prosperous and influential nation but is it favored above all others? Is it truly the greatest country on the planet as we've always been told? Quick Quiz:What country has meddled in more national elections around the world than any other country and has pumped the most CO2 into the atmosphere? Can you name a country that has transferred billions of dollars in wealth from its working people to an elite class of billionaires? Which nation has the highest percentage of its citizens locked behind bars and the most adults earning poverty wages? Which country has the worst gun violence in the world, has kept its workers' wages stagnant for three decades and crushed its unions? Are you able to name the country that carried out a campaign of brutal indigenous genocide while it held four million people in bondage and still continues to skirt its responsibilities to address the human devastation left behind? Which country has rigged its economic system for over a century so that people of color can only amass ten percent of the wealth of those in the majority Can you identify which nation developed the most destructive weapons in human history, has been engaged in war for 90 percent of its history, bombed dozens of countries since WW II and spends more on its military than any other country? What nation banned immigration based on religion and spread an obesity epidemic to nations around the globe? Which one exploded over 200 nuclear bombs in the atmosphere just to see how well they worked, spreading radioactive fallout worldwide? Can you identify a country where racism permeates every part of its society while its leaders pretend it's not so? What's the only affluent country that allows thousands of its citizens to die due to lack of health insurance? And which one had the worst response and highest COVID-19 death rate and experienced the first attempted coup in its history? Answer: That country is the United States of America. Surprised? Did you always believe America was the greatest country in history? Most Americans and all politicians do. But believing we're a nation above all others doesn't do much to encourage improvement. America: The Greatest Country in the World? See What the Facts Say. Bold Ideas for Making it Better poses some difficult questions about America's greatness and presents an Everest of evidence exposing why America might not be the greatest country on planet Earth and asks readers to look at the facts and decide for themselves. It concludes with bold ideas for changes in our policies to make America a better country for more of its citizens including a new U.S. Constitution to transform how this nation functions. This book is not anti-America or anti-democracy...it's simply anti-unfairness and anti-injustice!

Book excerpt: American Girls and Global Responsibility brings together insights from Cold War culture studies, girls’ studies, and the history of gender and militarization to shed new light on how age and gender work together to form categories of citizenship. Jennifer Helgren argues that a new internationalist girl citizenship took root in the country in the years following World War II in youth organizations such as Camp Fire Girls, Girl Scouts, YWCA Y-Teens, schools, and even magazines like Seventeen. She shows the particular ways that girls’ identities and roles were configured, and reveals the links between internationalist youth culture, mainstream U.S. educational goals, and the U.S. government in creating and marketing that internationalist girl, thus shaping the girls’ sense of responsibilities as citizens.

Book excerpt: "The ongoing COVID-19 pandemic marks the most significant, singular global disruption since World War II, with health, economic, political, and security implications that will ripple for years to come." -Global Trends 2040 (2021) Global Trends 2040-A More Contested World (2021), released by the US National Intelligence Council, is the latest report in its series of reports starting in 1997 about megatrends and the world's future. This report, strongly influenced by the COVID-19 pandemic, paints a bleak picture of the future and describes a contested, fragmented and turbulent world. It specifically discusses the four main trends that will shape tomorrow's world: - Demographics-by 2040, 1.4 billion people will be added mostly in Africa and South Asia. - Economics-increased government debt and concentrated economic power will escalate problems for the poor and middleclass. - Climate-a hotter world will increase water, food, and health insecurity. - Technology-the emergence of new technologies could both solve and cause problems for human life. Students of trends, policymakers, entrepreneurs, academics, journalists and anyone eager for a glimpse into the next decades, will find this report, with colored graphs, essential reading.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Rights and responsibilitieswhat a strange collection and connection of words. But words do mean things, and according to our great American Constitution and quite contrary to todays popular liberal democrat beliefs, we citizens really do have very many actual responsibilities (how dare we insinuate such mindless drivel?) and very few actual rights. Among those are the rights to life, liberty, and the pursuit of happinessnot the right to happiness but only the freedom of opportunity to pursue happiness and only if one chooses to do so or so chooses not to do so. Unfortunately, since the onset of modern-day liberal progressivism, a great majority of American citizens no longer accept the obligation of any national responsibility.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Selected by Newsweek as one of “14 nonfiction books you’ll want to read this fall” Fifty years after it first appeared, one of Noam Chomsky’s greatest essays will be published for the first time as a timely stand-alone book, with a new preface by the author As a nineteen-year-old undergraduate in 1947, Noam Chomsky was deeply affected by articles about the responsibility of intellectuals written by Dwight Macdonald, an editor of Partisan Review and then of Politics. Twenty years later, as the Vietnam War was escalating, Chomsky turned to the question himself, noting that "intellectuals are in a position to expose the lies of governments" and to analyze their "often hidden intentions." Originally published in the New York Review of Books, Chomsky's essay eviscerated the "hypocritical moralism of the past" (such as when Woodrow Wilson set out to teach Latin Americans "the art of good government") and exposed the shameful policies in Vietnam and the role of intellectuals in justifying it. Also included in this volume is the brilliant "The Responsibility of Intellectuals Redux," written on the tenth anniversary of 9/11, which makes the case for using privilege to challenge the state. As relevant now as it was in 1967, The Responsibility of Intellectuals reminds us that "privilege yields opportunity and opportunity confers responsibilities." All of us have choices, even in desperate times.
