Book Synopsis Macroeconomics in the Global Economy by : Jeffrey Sachs
Download or read book Macroeconomics in the Global Economy written by Jeffrey Sachs and published by . This book was released on 1993 with total page 806 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This textbook is written for the core intermediate macroeconomics course which forms an essential part of all economics degrees. The authors reflect the continually changing debate in macroeconomics by stressing the great variety of possible macroeconomic outcomes, rather than a single theory. More importantly the book reflects a new revolution in macroeconomics that an open economy approach is essential to the study of the subject. The previously ascendant closed economy approaches have ignored the fact that, for many countries, trade and capital flows between countries are a dominant, if not the dominant influence on the national economy.
Download or read book Macroeconomics written by David Miles and published by John Wiley & Sons. This book was released on 2012-04-09 with total page 626 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Macroeconomics: Understanding the Global Economy, 3rd Edition is to help students – and indeed anyone – understand contemporary and past economic events that shape the world we live in, and at a sophisticated level. But it does so without focusing on mathematical techniques and models for their own sake. Theory is taken seriously – so much so that the authors go to pains to understand the key aspects of theories in a way that will not put people off before they see how theories are useful to analyse issues. The authors believe that theories are essential to better understand the world, thus the book includes a wealth of historic and current episodes and data to both see how theories can help interpret the world and also to judge their validity. Economies today are very inter-connected; what happens in China matters pretty much everywhere; and what happens in one (even small) country in the euro zone has implications for the whole euro area and beyond, consequently Macroeconomics, 3rd Edition adopts a very international focus.
Book Synopsis International Macroeconomics in the Wake of the Global Financial Crisis by : Laurent Ferrara
Download or read book International Macroeconomics in the Wake of the Global Financial Crisis written by Laurent Ferrara and published by Springer. This book was released on 2018-06-13 with total page 298 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book collects selected articles addressing several currently debated issues in the field of international macroeconomics. They focus on the role of the central banks in the debate on how to come to terms with the long-term decline in productivity growth, insufficient aggregate demand, high economic uncertainty and growing inequalities following the global financial crisis. Central banks are of considerable importance in this debate since understanding the sluggishness of the recovery process as well as its implications for the natural interest rate are key to assessing output gaps and the monetary policy stance. The authors argue that a more dynamic domestic and external aggregate demand helps to raise the inflation rate, easing the constraint deriving from the zero lower bound and allowing monetary policy to depart from its current ultra-accommodative position. Beyond macroeconomic factors, the book also discusses a supportive financial environment as a precondition for the rebound of global economic activity, stressing that understanding capital flows is a prerequisite for economic-policy decisions.

Book excerpt: Understanding macroeconomic developments and policies in the twenty-first century is daunting: policy-makers face the combined challenges of supporting economic activity and employment, keeping inflation low and risks of financial crises at bay, and navigating the ever-tighter linkages of globalization. Many professionals face demands to evaluate the implications of developments and policies for their business, financial, or public policy decisions. Macroeconomics for Professionals provides a concise, rigorous, yet intuitive framework for assessing a country's macroeconomic outlook and policies. Drawing on years of experience at the International Monetary Fund, Leslie Lipschitz and Susan Schadler have created an operating manual for professional applied economists and all those required to evaluate economic analysis.

Book Synopsis Economics of Global Business by : Rodrigo Zeidan
Download or read book Economics of Global Business written by Rodrigo Zeidan and published by MIT Press. This book was released on 2018-11-13 with total page 426 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A textbook with innovative real-world macroeconomic analyses of timely policy issues, with case studies and examples from more than fifty countries. This timely and refreshingly real–world focused textbook examines some of the world's most critical policy issues through a macroeconomics lens. After presenting analytical foundations, modeling tools, and theoretical perspectives, Economics of Global Business goes a step further than most other texts, with a practical look at the local and multinational tradeoffs facing economic policymakers in more than fifty countries. Topics range from income equality and the financial crisis to GDP, inflation and unemployment, and, notably, one of the first macroeconomic examinations of climate change. Written by a globetrotting economist who teaches and consults on three continents, Economics of Global Business aims not for definitive answers but rather to provide a better understanding of the context-dependent rationales, constraints, and consequences of economic policy decisions. The book covers long-run and short-run growth (with examples from the United States, China, the European Union, South Korea, Japan, Latin America, Africa, Australia, and Vietnam); financial crises and central banks; monetary and fiscal policies; government budgets; currency regimes; climate change and macroeconomics; income inequality; and globalization. All chapters rely on recent and historical examples of economic policy in action. The book is particularly suitable for use as an introduction to macroeconomics for business students.
Book Synopsis Global Economics by : Clifford F. Thies
Download or read book Global Economics written by Clifford F. Thies and published by Rowman & Littlefield. This book was released on 2020-07-07 with total page 255 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Global Economics looks beyond the mere interaction of national economies as is implied by the term 'international economics.' It examines the integration of national economies into the emerging global economy. In keeping with the subtitle A Holistic Approach, the book considers the roles of technology, political arrangements, the rule of law, natural resources, climate change, social institutions and values, in addition to the role of economics (narrowly defined). In fact, recourse to abstract economic analysis is restrained, and discussion is replete with concrete examples and case studies. Specific topics include trade theory, policy and agreements, foreign exchange, exchange rate determination and hedging, international capital and labor flows, financial crises and development. The book details the changes that took place with the Industrial Revolution and the subsequent spread of market economics and democratic government. It develops the classic theory of comparative advantage, and then applies and extends the theory to explain the complex trade patterns of today. It uses game theory to analyze trade policy, and the tragedy of the commons to address the resource curse. The book covers topics such as the relationship of defense to trade policy not typically considered by international economics, in addition to taking a fresh approach to the traditional topics.
Download or read book Keynes written by Peter Temin and published by MIT Press. This book was released on 2014-09-19 with total page 132 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Why Keynes is relevant to today's global economic crisis, and how Keynesian ideas can point the way to renewed economic growth. As the global economic crisis continues to cause damage, some policy makers have called for a more Keynesian approach to current economic problems. In this book, the economists Peter Temin and David Vines provide an accessible introduction to Keynesian ideas that connects Keynes's insights to today's global economy and offers readers a way to understand current policy debates. They survey economic thinking before Keynes and explain how difficult it was for Keynes to escape from conventional wisdom. They also set out the Keynesian analysis of a closed economy and expand the analysis to the international economy, using a few simple graphs to present Keynes's formal analyses in an accessible way. Finally, they discuss problems of today's world economy, showcasing the usefulness of a simple Keynesian approach to current economic policy choices. Keynesian ideas, they argue, can lay the basis for a return to economic growth.
Book Synopsis Global Linkages by : Warwick J. McKibbin
Download or read book Global Linkages written by Warwick J. McKibbin and published by Brookings Institution Press. This book was released on 2011-03-01 with total page 296 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: With the rapid deterioration of the U.S. trade balance in the 1980s, the United States was forced to finance deficits by borrowing heavily from the rest of the world. In doing so, the United States went from being the world's largest creditor country to the world's largest debtor, while Japan and West Germany experienced a rise in trade surpluses. Such a shift in international trade flows has had profound effects on the world economy. McKibbin and Sachs address a range of issues involving macroeconomic imbalances in the world economy. Through the use of a new simulation model of the world economy they explore how policy actions undertaken in one country affect the trade flows and macroeconomic patterns among the other counties. The authors show that key macroeconomic features of the 1980s can be explained by shifts in monetary and fiscal policies in the major economies and by supply shocks due to changes in oil prices. In addition to showing how the global macroeconomic experience can be understood, they focus on a number of current policy issues, including the reduction of global trade imbalances, the consequences of U.S. fiscal consolidation, the effects of an oil price shock, the implications for the U.S. economy of increases in Japanese and German fiscal spending, the effects of targeting exchange rates among the major currencies, and the gains of increased coordination of macroeconomic politics among the major economies. In several cases, their conclusions are shown to be quite different from those that form the basis of many conventional views. The authors also analyze the importance of interaction between policymakers in industrial economies and conclude by reemphasizing the need for U.S. politicians and policy experts to recognize that macroeconomic results in the U.S. now depend heavily on events abroad.
Book Synopsis Demystifying Global Macroeconomics by : John E. Marthinsen
Download or read book Demystifying Global Macroeconomics written by John E. Marthinsen and published by Walter de Gruyter GmbH & Co KG. This book was released on 2020-02-10 with total page 873 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Demystifying Global Macroeconomics (DGM) provides readers with a practical, working use of international macroeconomics. For serious business and political leaders, understanding the global interconnections in economic and financial markets is crucial for making informed and well-timed decisions. DGM takes the mystery out of seemingly complex economic interactions by providing an easy-to-understand framework within which to analyze the effects of economic, social, and political shocks to a nation’s economy. John E. Marthinsen integrates the three major macroeconomic sectors, which are the credit market, goods and services market, and foreign exchange market. The author provides the reader with contemporary examples that virtually leap off the front pages of our daily news reports and confront business managers and politicians with choices and decisions to make. For example, DGM shows how to use macroeconomic tools and a global framework to analyze the effects of: U.S. tariffs on China and China’s tariffs on the United States Infrastructure spending Speculative capital outflows from nations under stress, such as Argentina and Turkey, and speculative capital inflows into safe-haven countries, such as Switzerland Demonetization in India Successfully fighting the opioid abuse problem in the United States Border adjustment tax Monetary policies Fiscal policies Marthinsen keeps readers visually engaged with the strategic use of figures, tables, charts, and illustrative exhibits. Demystifying Global Macroeconomics emphasizes the interaction among markets and equips readers with a macroeconomic perspective that will last (and be used) for years. Book excerpt: All managers face a business environment where international and macroeconomic phenomena matter. Understanding the genesis of financial and currency crises, stock market booms and busts, and social and labor unrest is a crucial aspect in making informed managerial decisions. Adverse macroeconomic phenomena can have a catastrophic impact on firm performance — witness the strong companies destroyed by the Mexican tequila crisis. Yet, at the same time, such episodes also create business opportunities — and not just for the hedge funds and speculators that profit from them. Managers that have and use a coherent framework for analyzing these phenomena will enjoy a competitive advantage. This book presents a series of case studies taught in the Harvard Business School course “Institutions, Macroeconomics, and the Global Economy.” The course addresses the opportunities created by the emergence of a global economy and proposes strategies for managing the risks that globalization entails.
