This book was released on 2023-12-18 with total page 836 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book provides a commentary on the United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child, which was adopted by the General Assembly of the United Nations on 20 November 1989. Part One contains a general introduction to the Convention on the Rights of the Child, and deals with matters such as the drafting history, the contents, direct application, horizontal effects, limitations, the Committee on the Rights of the Child, and the Convention's final provisions. Part Two contains an article-by-article commentary, the aim of which is not to give an interpretation of the precise nature and scope of States parties' obligations but, rather, to identify the materials, or sources, which provide guidance in that regard. In the identification of such materials, attention has been paid to the general rules of treaty interpretation, as set forth in the Vienna Convention on the Law of Treaties.
Book Synopsis The United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child: An Analysis of Treaty Provisions and Implications of U.S. Ratification by : Jonathan Todres
Download or read book The United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child: An Analysis of Treaty Provisions and Implications of U.S. Ratification written by Jonathan Todres and published by Martinus Nijhoff Publishers. This book was released on 2006-05-01 with total page 395 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This in-depth text goes beyond the rhetoric of the debate on children’s rights and the Convention on the Rights of the Child, in particular, to provide a detailed examination of the impact that U.S. ratification of the Convention would have on U.S. law. The chapters have been written by leading children’s advocates and scholars with a general audience in mind, as the authors believe that it is important for all Americans to become informed about the Convention and about children’s rights in general. With a greater understanding of the substance of the Convention and children’s rights, readers will be better positioned to determine what the real issues are, what is simply rhetoric without any basis in fact or law, and how they can address the real issues in an effective manner in order to provide a better world for all children.
Book Synopsis Implementing the Convention on the Rights of the Child by : James R Himes
Download or read book Implementing the Convention on the Rights of the Child written by James R Himes and published by Martinus Nijhoff Publishers. This book was released on 2023-08-28 with total page 280 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book considers one of the main umbrella articles of the Convention on the Rights of the Child: Article 4, dealing with the concept of the obligations of the States Parties to meet their commitments `to the maximum extent of their available resources and, where needed, within the framework of international cooperation'. The importance is emphasized of a broad interpretation of societal `resources', going well beyond the severely limited finances of governments in most developing countries and extending both to the international (official and non-governmental) levels and to the expanding civil societies of these nations. `Resources' are broadly defined to include human, technological, cultural and organizational capabilities as well as conventional economic resources. The thematic chapters give many examples of how such `resources' can be effectively mobilized for children, including the areas of education, health, nutrition and child labour.

This text defines an approach to mental healthcare focused on the provision of evidence-based, cost-effective treatments, founded on the principles of sharing the best information about common problems and achieving international equity in coverage, options and outcomes. The coverage spans a diverse range of topics and defines five priority areas for the field. These embrace the domains of global advocacy, systems of development, research progress, capacity building, and monitoring. The book concludes by defining the steps to achieving equality of care globally. This is essential reading for policy makers, administrators, economists and mental health care professionals, and those from the allied professions of sociology, anthropology, international politics and foreign policy.
Book Synopsis The International Law of Youth Rights by : Jorge Cardona
Download or read book The International Law of Youth Rights written by Jorge Cardona and published by Hotei Publishing. This book was released on 2015-02-04 with total page 1959 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In 1996 William Angel launched a unique, pioneering study tracing the origin, growth and basic features of the international law of youth rights. It consisted of both source documents and commentary on the historical trends to elaborate and codify international instruments and standards in this field, as well as action taken by governmental, intergovernmental, and non-governmental organizations to promote and protect youth rights. It concluded with a call for a new international instrument and monitoring machinery to better promote and protect the rights of youth on a global basis. The aim of the current revised, updated and expanded edition of this ground-breaking work is twofold. First, to preserve and update the landmark historical research undertaken by William Angel and present it to today’s audience. Second, to introduce up-to-date analysis of the state of the International Law of Youth Rights and to provide an easy-to-use compilation of sources of law for researchers and practitioners active in this field. This important collection will provide a roadmap for readers to finding the various sources of the International Law of Youth Rights and a reference point for the most relevant legal documents in force. It aims to spark further legal, political and sociological research in the academic field, as well as support even stronger advocacy actions to further the rights of young people. Two volume set.
Book Synopsis A Thematic Guide to Documents on Health and Human Rights by : Alfredsson
Download or read book A Thematic Guide to Documents on Health and Human Rights written by Alfredsson and published by Martinus Nijhoff Publishers. This book was released on 2023-09-20 with total page 647 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This publication is the second volume of Thematic Human Rights Guides published under the auspices of the Raoul Wallenberg Institute of Human Rights and Humanitarian Law. The aim of the Guides, as the title implies, is to facilitate the use of international human rights standards by their systematic presentation. Rather than reproducing full texts of various instruments, substantive standards are grouped according to subject-matter in order to enable users to quickly and easily locate the topic they may be looking for. A detailed index, with references to the many international instruments which address the same issue, reinforces this thematic approach. The choice of human rights and health for the second volume in this series highlights the aim of the Guides: to map out the entire range of human rights and fundamental freedoms as they relate to a specific topic. The sheer size of this volume illustrates the number and variety of human rights standards relevant for health. Many of these standards have been generated by organizations dealing with health rather than human rights, and quite a few are found under medical ethics rather than human rights. Subsuming medical ethics under international human rights law is a novel development, pioneered by the Council of Europe. Elsewhere, the two fields remain separate and the publication of this Guide is intended to overcome this separation. Documents have been included which provide an understanding of human rights within the health profession (such as guidance to medical doctors with regard to abortion adopted by the International Medical Association) and those human rights safeguards that have been elaborated to prevent abuses by health professionals (such as those concerning mental health). All of these standards provide a substantive background for inter-professional dialogue on the evolving understanding of human rights. A Thematic Guide to Documents on Health and Human Rights reflects the full range of issues encompassed by human rights and health. Besides the right to health, a wide range of rights and freedoms can be - and is - affected by the health sector. Priority has been accorded to the crucial human rights safeguards, namely those specifying protection against undue limitations or restrictions upon human rights. Much as with any other human rights topic, those safeguards are best developed for categories that are most vulnerable to denials and violations of their rights. Detainees, prisoners, victims of armed conflicts, children and the mentally ill thus figure prominently.
