Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: There is no sporting event more popular than the World Cup. For one month every four years, billions of people around the world turn their attention to the tournament. Fans call in sick to work, pack into bars to watch games, or stay home for days at a time glued to their TV sets. Nothing else seems to matter. In A History of the World Cup: 1930-2014, Clemente A. Lisi chronicles this international phenomenon, providing vivid accounts of individual games from the tournament's origins in 1930 to modern times. It features a glossary of terms, statistics for each competition, photos, and profiles of the most memorable—and controversial—figures of the sport, including Diego Maradona, Juste Fontaine, Franz Beckenbauer, Mario Kempes, Ronaldo, Zinedine Zidane, and, of course, Pelé. Though other histories of the World Cup largely ignore the United States' contribution to the competition, this volume highlights the progress of the American teams over the last several decades. Updated with a new chapter on the 2014 World Cup, profiles of those players who stood out in the latest competition, and revised statistical information, A History of the World Cup provides a fascinating read for fans of the game.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The World Cup, the greatest and most popular sporting event in history. What started as a small amateur tournament in 1930, grew to a gargantuan professional one that is now watched by billions globally. This book documents every World Cup game ever played at every tournament. Yes, that does include the Women's World Cup. Every single game covered, each with its own mini-commentary (some games get big mini-commentaries), from 1930 to 2023. Not only does this book cover every single World Cup game played, but it is also crammed with stats, trivia and a ton of stories. Major and minor incidents looked at, with hundreds upon hundreds of amazing World Cup facts along the way. Such as the World Cup qualifying match that sparked an actual war. Which World Cup had a group stage with only two teams in a group and why? What legendary and Oscar-winning film composer wrote a World Cup song? Unbelievable stories of mass brawls breaking out between teams in the dressing rooms and neo-Nazi pitch invasions. And funny yarns such as the time Jimmy Greaves caught a dog invader mid-match. All while being peppered with my usual snarky humour and witty observations. Stories of proven bribery, corruption, death threats and even murder. World Cup champions that really didn't deserve to win and hosts that didn't even get the winning votes to host. Controversies galore as I look at some of the messier aspects of the World Cup and FIFA, even before Sepp Blatter and Qatar (also including Sepp Blatter and Qatar). My opinions on some amazing goals, like Maradona's one from the England vs Argentina match during Mexico '86, to cheap and cheating goals, like Maradona's one from the England vs Argentina match during Mexico '86. Perhaps the most complete and comprehensive book ever written about the World Cup and certainly one with a good sense of humour and not just stats and information... though there still will be several ton-loads of stats and information. With more than 333,000 words. Just for perspective, Tolstoy's War & Peace had 500,000 words and that was utter s**t, no World Cup in it at all.

Book excerpt: An all-encompassing, chronological guide to football's World Cup, one of the world's few truly international events, in good time for the June 2018 kick-off in Russia. From its beginnings in 1930 to the modern all-singing, all-dancing self-styled 'greatest show on Earth', every tournament is covered with features on major stars and great games, as well as stories about some less celebrated names and quirky stats and intriguing essays. Holt's focus is very much on what takes place on the field, rather than how football is a mirror for economic corruption, or how a nation's style of play represents a profound statement about its people, or how a passion for football can lift underpaid, socially marginalised people out of poverty. From the best World Cups, in 1958 and 1970, to the worst, in 1962 and 2010, he looks behind the facts and the technical observations to the stories: the mysterious sins of omission; critical injuries to key players; and coaching U-turns. He explains how England's World Cup achievements under Sven-Göran Eriksson, far from being a national disgrace, were actually quite impressive, and looks at why Alf Ramsey didn't take Bobby Charlton off in 1970, but this is no parochial, jingoistic account. The book also asks why Brazil did not contribute in 1966, despite having won the previous two tournaments and going on to win the next one? Why the greatest players of their day did not always shine at the World Cup - George Best and Alfredo Di Stefano, for example, never even made it to the Finals. Why did Johann Cruyff not go to the 1978 World Cup? And why did one of Germany's greatest players never play in the World Cup? There are lots of tables, some filled with obvious, but necessary information, but others with more quirky observations. Alongside accounts of epic games, there are also brief biographies of all the great heroes of the World Cup.

This is the third edition, fully updated to include not only all the results and drama from 2006, but also all the results from the qualifying stages of the 2010 tournament. The result is a book of well over 600 pages, which will hit the stores in April, well in advance of the first matches - indeed, at each of the last two World Cups has been the first statistical guide to be published. The book's statistical content is astoundingly comprehensive: for every tournament, right the way from the first ever in Uruguay in 1930, it gives you every match: the date it was played, the venue, the names of all the players, and the referee, and of course the result. These tables are accompanied by exhaustive summaries, round by round, of all the matches, their drama and their goals, as well as by league tables of how every group of matches finished up. So, for any World Cup watcher, whether they want to know which two-dozen players have been awarded the Golden Boot over the history of the tournament, or simply study the players of the four first-time African nations in the World Cup in 2006, this is the book. With England qualifying for 2010, the book is once again assured of a large market. Terry Crouch has now published three editions of this popular World Cup guide. He lives in Garstang, Lancashire.
