Book Synopsis Marine Geochemistry by : Roy Chester
Download or read book Marine Geochemistry written by Roy Chester and published by John Wiley & Sons. This book was released on 2009-04-01 with total page 522 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The first edition of Marine Geochemistry received strongcritical acclaim, and the reviews included the comments that it'provides a benchmark in the field' and 'is clearly recognizable asa standard text for years to come'. Marine Geochemistry offers a fully comprehensive andintegrated treatment of the chemistry of the oceans, theirsediments and biota. It addresses the fundamental question 'How dothe oceans work as a chemical system?' by capitalizing on thesignificant advances in understanding oceanic processes made overthe past three decades. These advances have been facilitated byimproved sampling and analytical techniques, a better understandingof theoretical concepts and the instigation of large-sizedinternational oceanographic programs. Designed for use as a text, the book treats the oceans as a'unified system' in which material stored in the sea water, thesediment and the rock reservoirs interacts to control thecomposition of sea water itself. Part I covers the transport ofmaterial to the oceans via rivers, the atmosphere and hydrothermalsystems, and discusses their relative flux magnitudes. Part IIconsiders the oceans as a reservoir, introducing water-columnparameters before discussing water-column fluxes and the benthicboundary layer. Part III is devoted to the sediment reservoir. Thetopics covered include diagenesis, the major components of thesediments, and the processes controlling the geochemistry ofoceanic deposit, which are discussed in terms of sediment-formingsignals. Part IV offers an overview and synthesis of the integratedmarine geochemical system. Since the publication of the first edition, there have beenfurther significant advances in several areas of the subject. Therevised text of this edition accommodates these advances, whilestill retaining the emphasis on identifying key processes operatingwithin a 'unified ocean.' Special attention has been paid tofundamental conceptual changes, such as those related to tracemetal speciation in sea water, hydrothermal activity, carbondioxide and the importance of the oceans in world climate change, the transport of particulate material to the interior of the ocean, primary production and iron limitation, colloids, and thepreservation/destruction of organic matter in marine sediments. Intermediate and advanced students with interests in chemicaloceanography, marine geochemistry, marine biology and environmentalchemistry will welcome this revised comprehensive text. Otherstudents in the broader field of earth sciences will find it to bean essential reference source dealing with the interaction betweenthe atmosphere, the ocean and the solid earth. Incorporates all significant recent advances in thefield. 'Unified system' approach to ocean chemistry. Emphasises geological contexts, e.g. sediment diagenesis.

This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 331 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the USA, Western and Central Europe, there are many large-scale polluted sites that are too large to be cleaned up economically with available technologies. The pollution is caused by heavy industries to soils and sediments in waterways and reservoirs. Since these areas are expected to remain polluted for many years, it is necessary to take a long-term view to insure that the capacity to retain the contaminants is not diminished and to understand the potential for large-scale contaminant mobilization at these sites triggered by changing environmental conditions. This book provides information for predicting long-term changes and making risk assessments and describes the approach of geochemical engineering to handling large-scale polluted sites.
Book Synopsis Handbook of Ecotoxicology by : David J. Hoffman
Download or read book Handbook of Ecotoxicology written by David J. Hoffman and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 2002-11-13 with total page 1316 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Economic Mineralization - the volume sets out to present various aspects of a very broad details of a narrow field of economic mineralization at a time when the competitively growing global economy and the pressing needs of the society are compelling economic geology to grow and pile of data is accumulating and opinions changing very rapidly. The volume incorporates papers, a resultant of information explosion and electrifying conceptual revolution in economic geology, describing the new and exciting results and timely reviews integrating and immense amount of knowledge in the field of geology, exploration, mining, environment, economics, geophysics and geochemistry that has bearing on economic mineralization. The book imbibes sections on crustal evolution and economic mineralization, economic mineralization of igneous application, economic mineralization of sedimentary affiliation, prospecting and exploration and mining, economics and environments. In all the five sections current concepts, problems and probable trends of future research are highlighted. This book will be an invaluable everlasting reference for both industry and academia specializing in economic mineralization and for those who need updated information and current research in the field. It will be equally useful for advance level geology and mining students and research scholars throughout the world.
