Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Chaotic behavior arises in a variety of control settings. In some cases, it is beneficial to remove this behavior; in others, introducing or taking advantage of the existing chaotic components can be useful for example in cryptography. Chaos in Automatic Control surveys the latest methods for inserting, taking advantage of, or removing chaos in a variety of applications. This book supplies the theoretical and pedagogical basis of chaos in control systems along with new concepts and recent developments in the field. Presented in three parts, the book examines open-loop analysis, closed-loop control, and applications of chaos in control systems. The first section builds a background in the mathematics of ordinary differential and difference equations on which the remainder of the book is based. It includes an introductory chapter by Christian Mira, a pioneer in chaos research. The next section explores solutions to problems arising in observation and control of closed-loop chaotic control systems. These include model-independent control methods, strategies such as H-infinity and sliding modes, polytopic observers, normal forms using homogeneous transformations, and observability normal forms. The final section explores applications in wireless transmission, optics, power electronics, and cryptography. Chaos in Automatic Control distills the latest thinking in chaos while relating it to the most recent developments and applications in control. It serves as a platform for developing more robust, autonomous, intelligent, and adaptive systems.

Book excerpt: Since the 1970's, there has been a great deal of research effort spent on studying chaotic systems and the properties of the chaotic signals generated. Characterized by their wideband, impulse-like autocorrelation and low cross-correlation properties, chaotic signals are useful spread-spectrum signals for carrying digital information. Spectrum spreading has become one of the most popular modulation techniques for high-speed wireless communications. It makes use of signals of very wide bandwidth to carry information at relatively low data rates, and possesses advantages such as low probability of interception, resistance to jamming, multiple-access capability and mitigation to multipath effect, which are particularly important in a wireless scenario. In addition to enjoying the aforementioned benefits, chaotic signals can be generated using simple circuitries, thus lowering the cost of transceivers. Early study of chaos-based communication systems was focused on a single-user case. In the past few years, more effort has been put on investigating systems with multiple-access capability, which is a key feature of spread-spectrum communication systems. Digital Communications with Chaos presents a detailed study of some multiple-access schemes used for chaos-based communications, and evaluates their performance. In addition, the effectiveness of the multiuser detection techniques, whose primary objective is to reduce interference between users and hence improve performance, is evaluated in the context of multiple-access digital communication systems. Hot research topic Describes communication technologies for the future Authors among the pioneers researching in chaos-based communications

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Fireweaver is the true story of May Eulitt and the amazing near-death experience she shared with two of her closest friends. Working in the fields on her family farm, she and her companions are struck by lightning and nearly killed. While unconscious, they travel together to an otherworldly place where they are greeted by spirit guides who explain to them the meaning of their experience and the significance it has for their lives back in the real world. Rather than focusing on the details of the near-death experience itself as many other books on this subject have done, this book focuses more on the context into which the near-death experience can be placed. From the standpoint of spiritual practices, religion, and paranormal experiences, May came from a very unusual background. Going back several generations, the women in her family practiced a form of practical magic that they refer to as the Talent. They have been referred to as witches, gypsies, seers, channelers, or fireweavers; individuals with a telekinetic ability to manipulate fire and other forms of energy. The book describes much of this family background and many of the unusual and mystical experiences that May had prior to her near-death experience, such as the time she saw her Great-grandmother use the Talent to summon up a tornado to punish an abusive husband, or the time that she herself was nearly killed by a psychotic minister who believed she was a witch. After tracing May ́s family history up to the point at which her near-death experience takes place, the book then deals with May ́s struggles to come to terms with the near-death experience in her own life. The main goal of the book is to discover the broader perspective; to find meaning in the near-death experience with regard to spiritual beliefs, religious practices, other paranormal phenomena, and life in general. This focus is made more poignant by the fact that May passed away shortly after this book was completed. Together, May Eulitt and Stephen Hoyer made up a writing team well qualified to tell this story. Because of May ́s family background and the spiritual practices in which she was trained, she was able to provide a unique perspective on the near-death experience. In addition, Stephen is a professional psychologist and a knowledgeable expert on near-death experiences and other paranormal phenomena, such as after-death communication and energy medicine. He has taught workshops on near-death experiences, he has consulted with other experts in the field, and for several years he helped May not only with the writing of the book, but also with the processing of the experience itself. The authors regarded this as a very symbiotic process in which they both grew and benefited a great deal. The book is an attempt to share the essence of that experience with a wider public.

Book excerpt: Log-domain and translinear filters provide a competitive alternative to the challenges of ever increasing low-voltage, low-power and high frequency demands in the area of continuous-time filters. Since translinear filters are fundamentally large-signal linear, they are capable of realizing a large dynamic range in combination with excellent tunability characteristics. Large-signal linearity is achieved by exploiting the accurate exponential behavior of the bipolar transistor or the subthreshold MOS transistor. A generalization of the dynamic translinear principle exploiting the square law behavior of the MOS transistor is theoretically possible, but not practically relevant. Translinear and log-domain filters are based on the dynamic translinear principle, a generalization of the conventional (static) translinear principle. Besides their application for linear filters, dynamic translinear circuits can also be used for the realization of non-linear dynamic functions, such as oscillators, RMS-DC converters and phase-locked loops. Dynamic Translinear and Log-Domain Circuits: Analysis and Synthesis covers both the analysis and synthesis of translinear circuits. The theory is presented using one unifying framework for both static and dynamic translinear networks, which is based on a current-mode approach. General analysis methods are presented, including the large-signal and non-stationary analysis of noise. A well-structured synthesis method is described greatly enhancing the designability of log-domain and translinear circuits. Comparisons are made with respect to alternative analysis and synthesis methods presented in the literature. The theory is illustrated and verified by various examples and realizations. Dynamic Translinear and Log-Domain Circuits: Analysis and Synthesis is an excellent reference for researchers and circuit designers, and may be used as a text for advanced courses on the topic.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Non-destructive testing (NDT) systems can generate incomplete, incorrect or conflicting information about a flaw or a defect. Therefore, the use of more than one NDT system is usually required for accurate defect detection and/or quantification. In addition to a reduction in inspection time, important cost savings could be achieved if a data fusion process is developed to combine signals from multisensor systems for manual and remotely operated inspections. This gathering of data from multiple sources and an efficient processing of information help in decision making, reduce signal uncertainty and increase the overall performance of a non-destructive examination. This book gathers, for the first time, essays from leading NDT experts involved in data fusion. It explores the concept of data fusion by providing a comprehensive review and analysis of the applications of NDT data fusion. This publication concentrates on NDT data fusion for industrial applications and highlights progress and applications in the field of data fusion in areas ranging from materials testing in the aerospace industry to medical applications. Each chapter contains a specific case study with a theoretical part but also presents experimental results from a practical point of view. The book should be considered more as a pragmatic introduction to the applications of NDT data fusion rather than a rigorous basis for theoretical studies.
