European Union Committee and published by Stationery Office/Tso. This book was released on 2004 with total page 49 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Working Time Directive was introduced in the EU in 1993, setting an average limit of 48 working hours over seven days for employees (and includes other measures such as establishing night work limits and entitlements to rest breaks and four weeks paid annual leave). The Directive was transposed into UK law by the Working Time Regulations 1998 which includes the right to a voluntary opt-out. The Committee's inquiry is designed to contribute to the review of the Directive currently being undertaken by the European Commission. Their conclusions include that the voluntary opt-out should be retained as it offers flexibility to employers and employees; and that more time is needed to work out a practical compromise regarding the working hours of on-call hospital doctors which protects standards of patient care without blocking medical training needs.

The Committee welcome the agreements reached in Council on 9 June on both these long-standing proposals. Book Synopsis Sexual Equality in Access to Goods and Services Report by : Great Britain. Parliament. House of Lords. European Union Committee
Download or read book Sexual Equality in Access to Goods and Services Report written by Great Britain. Parliament. House of Lords. European Union Committee and published by The Stationery Office. This book was released on 2004 with total page 76 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Committee's report examines the EU Commission's proposals to extend EU sex discrimination legislation to cover the supply of, and access to, goods and services. The proposals are essentially limited to commercial transactions (excluding aspects such as education, public health care, media and advertising representation), and will therefore be less comprehensive that current UK sex discrimination laws. The main impact on existing UK legislation will be the proposal to ban the use of gender as a factor in calculating insurance premiums and benefits. Although this suggestion has aroused considerable controversy in the UK, the Committee believes that the onus must be on insurance companies to justify any departure from the principle of equal gender treatment, based on objective risk assessment. More research and consultation is required before these proposals are implemented. Sound practical guidelines need to be devised, taking into account the implications on future annuities for men and women in the UK market. Overall, the Committee argues that it is a reasonable objective to move away from using gender as a criterion to assess motor insurance premiums, and to seek to achieve a fair and competitive pricing based on other factors.

Book Synopsis Jihadism, Foreign Fighters and Radicalization in the EU by : Inmaculada Marrero Rocha

This book was released on 2018-11-20 with total page 263 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Jihadism, Foreign Fighters and Radicalization in the EU addresses the organizational and strategic changes in terrorism in Europe as a result of urban jihadism and the influx of foreign fighters of European nationality or residence. Examining the different types of responses to the treatment of radicalization and its consequences in the recruitment of young urban fighters and jihadists, this book offers a framework for understanding the process of violent radicalization. It critically analyses political and legal responses that have taken place within the European framework, whilst also examining a series of functional responses from social and behavioural psychology. This book then goes on to develop an explanatory model from an economic standpoint, exploring the need to adapt the fight against the financing of terrorism to the changes in the sources of financing jihadist cells and foreign fighters. Furthermore, the volume draws on experience from the prison sector to assess the process of radicalization and the possibilities of intervention. Taking an interdisciplinary approach, this book will be of great interest to students of terrorism and counter-terrorism, radicalization, European politics, radical Islam and security studies.

Book Synopsis Consumer Protection and Online Auction Platforms by : Christine Riefa
Download or read book Consumer Protection and Online Auction Platforms written by Christine Riefa and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2016-03-03 with total page 276 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Online auctions have undergone many transformations and continue to attract millions of customers worldwide. However these popular platforms remain understudied by legal scholars and misunderstood by legislators. This book explores the legal classification of online auction sites across a range of countries in Europe. Including empirical studies conducted on 28 online auction websites in the UK, the research focusses on the protection of consumers’ economic rights and highlights the shortcomings that the law struggles to control. With examinations into important developments, including the Consumer Rights Directive and the latest case law from the CJEU on the liability of intermediaries, Riefa anticipates changes in the law, and points out further changes that are needed to create a safe legal environment for consumers, whilst preserving the varied business model adopted by online auction sites. The study provides insights into how technical measures as well as a tighter legislative framework or enforcement pattern could provide consumers with better protection, in turn reinforcing trust, and ultimately benefiting the online auction platforms themselves.

Book Synopsis Consumer Lending in Theory and Practice by : Petr Teplý
Download or read book Consumer Lending in Theory and Practice written by Petr Teplý and published by Charles University in Prague, Karolinum Press. This book was released on 2016-01-01 with total page 187 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book deals with consumer lending from both theoretical and empirical points of view. In the theoretical section, it book analyses the wider context of financial literacy, household indebtedness and the global consumer credit market including relevant legal, regulatory and risk management issues. In the empirical section, the book uses The Navigator of Responsible Lending as an evaluation tool to assess both bank and non-bank consumer credit providers in the Czech Republic. Although our empirical research is done as a case study on the Czech Republic, its basic ideas might be easily applied to other countries as well. Enclosures to the book include additional texts relevant to consumer lending (including case studies and an unofficial English translation of the Czech Consumer Credit Act) and therefore provide the reader with several perspectives on the topic.
