Book Synopsis Gulf Energy and the World by : The Emirates Center for Strategic Studies and Research
Download or read book Gulf Energy and the World written by The Emirates Center for Strategic Studies and Research and published by Emirates Center for Strategic Studies and Research. This book was released on 1997-10-28 with total page 24 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The objective of this volume is to provide energy trend assessments and analyses of the future relationship of oil and gas to the world economy and to offer policy recommendations for the Gulf region. Currently, the Gulf oil-producing countries are faced with a myriad of challenges to their position as one of the world's key providers of energy resources. The downward trend in the real price of oil since the early 1980s has forced the Gulf economies to undergo a series of significant adjustments. The book provides a historical overview of the Gulf's role in world energy and outlines several factors underlying the price trend. Conservation measures in consumer countries, weak economic performance in industrialized nations, and new oil and gas-producing ventures outside OPEC are among the issues considered. Also examined are the energy-related strategic planning agendas of OPEC countries and the short-term energy market choices and constraints facing them. Given the sizable oil reserves available in the Gulf, the rising energy demand in Asia, and the growing energy needs of the Gulf itself, the Gulf region will continue to play a crucial role in the world energy market. In this context, some of the potential threats to the Gulf position in the world oil market are discussed, including the development of energy efficient technologies, the competition between gas exporters in the Gulf, and the production potential of the former Soviet Union. In light of the different issues raised and the finite nature of the energy resources available in the Gulf, the book concludes by underlining the urgent need for economic diversification in Gulf nations.

Book Synopsis Race, Poverty, and Domestic Policy by : C. Michael Henry
Download or read book Race, Poverty, and Domestic Policy written by C. Michael Henry and published by Yale University Press. This book was released on 2008-10-01 with total page 806 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: div What explains the continuing hardship of so many black Americans? A distinguished group of scholars analyzes the long, complex structural and environmental causes of discrimination and their effects on African-Americans. The authors examine the impact of poverty, poor health, poor schools, poor housing, poor neighborhoods, and few job opportunities—and demonstrate how multiple causes reinforce each other and condemn African-Americans to positions of inferiority and poverty. Some of the contributors examine policies designed to correct problems, while others look at the changing racial and ethnic composition in America and its implications for African-Americans, as other minorities surpass them in numbers and claim political, economic, and social attention. The late James Tobin has contributed a foreword to this important collection. /DIV
Book Synopsis Child Poverty in New Zealand by : Jonathan Boston
Download or read book Child Poverty in New Zealand written by Jonathan Boston and published by Bridget Williams Books. This book was released on 2014-06-16 with total page 296 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Jonathan Boston and Simon Chapple have written the definitive book on child poverty in New Zealand. Dr Russell Wills, Children’s Commissioner Between 130,000 and 285,000 New Zealand children live in poverty, depending on the measure used. These disturbing figures are widely discussed, yet often poorly understood. If New Zealand does not have ‘third world poverty’, what are these children actually experiencing? Is the real problem not poverty but simply poor parenting? How does New Zealand compare globally and what measures of poverty and hardship are most relevant here? What are the consequences of this poverty for children, their families and society? Can we afford to reduce child poverty and, if we can, how? Jonathan Boston and Simon Chapple look hard at these questions, drawing on available national and international evidence and speaking to an audience across the political spectrum. Their analysis highlights the strong and urgent case for addressing child poverty in New Zealand. Crucially, the book goes beyond illustrating the scale of this challenge, and why it must be addressed, to identifying real options for reducing child poverty. A range of practical and achievable policies is presented, alongside candid discussion of their strengths and limitations. These proposals for improving the lives of disadvantaged children deserve wide public debate and make this a vitally important book for all New Zealanders.

Book Synopsis Distributional Effects of Environmental and Energy Policy by : Don Fullerton
Download or read book Distributional Effects of Environmental and Energy Policy written by Don Fullerton and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2017-05-15 with total page 397 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Many effects of environmental and energy policy are likely to disproportionately burden those with low income. First, it raises the price of fossil-fuel-intensive products that constitute a high fraction of low-income budgets (like gasoline, heating fuel and electricity). Second, the handout of pollution permits to firms provides value to those who own them. Third, low-income individuals may place more value on food and shelter than on improvements in environmental quality, so high-income individuals may get the most benefit of pollution abatement. Fourth, air quality improvements may raise the value of houses owned by landlords, rather than helping renters. These effects might all hurt the poor more than the rich. This book brings together the seminal economics literature that studies whether these fears are valid and whether anything can be done about them.
