Book excerpt: This report aims to evaluate the Foundation's 2001 working conditions survey in the acceding and candidate countries (Foundation, 2003), as well as providing original analysis of data gathered by 10 national research teams. The resulting national reports provide a wealth of material analysing key dimensions of the labour market and work situation for women during a period of economic transition. This report puts these findings in context, and synthesises and analyses them at a comparative level, in addition to examining the Foundation's survey in greater depth.

Book excerpt: Despite much legislative progress in gender equality over the past 40 years, there are still gender gaps across many aspects of the labour market. Inequalities are still evident in areas such as access to the labour market, employment patterns and associated working conditions. This report explores gender differences across several dimensions of working conditions, examining relevant country differences, analysing the different occupational groups of both men and women, and comparing the public and private sectors. It also looks at the impact of the crisis on gender segregation in employment. Based on findings from the fifth European working conditions survey (EWCS), conducted in 2010, the analysis offers a striking picture of women and men at work across 34 European countries today.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Most European countries have experienced labour market reforms at varying times leading to extended working life and a postponement of retirement age. This book provides a gender perspective on the impact of extended working life on the different dimensions of well-being, the factors which can limit extended working life, and the working conditions of older workers. Over the course of 11 chapters the book explores factors that can limit access to paid work or affect working conditions for older workers, including care for dependent individuals, negative stereotypes surrounding aged workers and poor health. It also investigates differences in working conditions for older workers by gender compared to other groups of workers and across European countries including case-studies from Austria, France, Spain, Poland, Croatia, Albania and Turkey. It will be of interest to all scholars and students of social policy, sociology, gender studies and labour studies more broadly.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Over the last decades, the activity rate of women has strongly increases throughout Europe and has been one of the major changes affecting our societies in general and the workplace in particular. Many reasons explain this increase, such as the recognition of their high level of education, the wish for autonomy and social recognition, the necessity of a double income. But while more women work (in some coutries the activity rates for men and women are identical), they still face problems in the workplace to get the same status as men (the "glass ceiling"), and they are still overwhelmingly responsible for family and domestic duties. In 1991 and 1996 the Foundation carried out statistical surveys on working conditions in all Member States. The Second European Survey on Working Conditions (1996) was designed with gender specific issues in mind. The present document reports on its finding with regard to gender differences in the workplace and discusses them in the light of the ongoing debate on equal opportunities. With this report the Foundation hopes to provide policy makers with a better understanding of the problemes to overcome in order to promote gender sensitive workplaces Editor

Book excerpt: The book investigates transnational migration and mobility of women from and within Central-Eastern European countries. It looks at women’s practices and experiences mostly in the service sector where they are in demand as substitutes in stereotypically „women’s work“. The book combines different perspectives: sociological and anthropological studies, comparative policy analysis and historical and statistical evidence and provides new insights into current theoretical debates in migration and gender studies.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Recent enlargement to the east made the European Union a more diverse social space and brought it into more direct contact with the social and cultural aftermath of communism. The purpose of this book is to help social scientists, policy makers and other observers cope with the unfamiliarity of this new world by bringing together a collection of informative analyses of key domains of social life in the new member states and candidate countries, viewed in comparison both to each other and to the 'old' EU-15. The focus is on social conditions, such as social exclusion, poverty and living conditions, work and labour markets, family and housing. But is also offers accounts of the institutional contexts within which these conditions arise. The analyses makes use of a range of data, including a new data source, the European Quality of Life Survey 2003.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: What types of work arrangements do women and men prefer? To what extent do current work patterns diverge from these preferences? These questions are of vital importance for European employment policy. To achieve a higher employment rate, it is necessary both to increase the number of jobs and to encourage work arrangements that accommodate individual preferences. In this way, women and men will be able to participate actively in the labour market throughout their working lives. This report looks at the role played by gender in determining labour market participation. It draws on findings from a major survey on employment options carried out by the European Foundation for the Improvement of Living and Working Conditions across all 15 EU Member States and Norway. It shows how women's and men's employment preferences are related to the kinds of jobs they do, as well as to their domestic circumstances, and compares the wishes of those who are currently employed with those of job-seekers. The study covers a range of aspects including self-employment, working from home, childcare, and working time arrangements.

Book excerpt: Gender inequality at work persists across Europe, despite the long standing attention paid and efforts made to tackle it. This Eurofound report presents a closer look at women's and men's working conditions, using data from Eurofound's European Working Conditions Survey (EWCS) and complementing previous Eurofound research on, among other things, working time patterns, work-life balance and workers' health. Beyond the general differences in the labour market, it highlights many important gaps in men's and women's working conditions and job quality which require specific attention. According to the EWCS data, the reduction of gender gaps in those areas showing improvement over the last 5 to 10 years remains limited. European and national strategies aimed at achieving job quality for all, that seek to mainstream gender equality, could help address persistent inequalities between men and women.

Book excerpt: Early evidence on the pandemic’s effects pointed to women’s employment falling disproportionately, leading observers to call a “she-cession.” This paper documents the extent and persistence of this phenomenon in a quarterly sample of 38 advanced and emerging market economies. We show that there is a large degree of heterogeneity across countries, with over half to two-thirds exhibiting larger declines in women’s than men’s employment rates. These gender differences in COVID-19’s effects are typically short-lived, lasting only a quarter or two on average. We also show that she-cessions are strongly related to COVID-19’s impacts on gender shares in employment within sectors.
