Book excerpt: Excerpt from Eight Chapters on the History of Work and Wages: Being a Reprint of Chapters VIII., XII., XIV., XV., XVII., XVIII., XIX., XX., Of "Six Centuries of Work and Wages" Henry was the most unlucky of English monarchs. After such a minority, no abilities could have saved him, and he had none. He inherited a war in which he took no share, except as part of a pageant. The lord of two kingdoms, he had no authority in either. The war which made others rich made him a pauper. Fastolfe and Cromwell gathered gigantic fortunes from the spoils of office, from the spoils of war, and from lucrative trade. The opulence of the great houses of the Neviles, with their fortunate marriages, their numerous titles, their vast estates; of the Beauforts, the Holands, the Poles, and the rest, was prodigious. The riches of the great English houses were amazing even to men like De Commines, who had been familiar with the opulence of the House of Burgundy and the wealth of the great Flemish burghers. When acts of resumption were passed, we can see in the exceptions the noble mob who were squabbling over the plunder of the Crown, and were soon to fly at each others' throats like wild beasts. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Wealth and Progress: A Critical Examination of the Wages Question and Its Economic Relation to Social Reform He was the pioneer of the short-hour movement in this country, and after years devoted to the further ance of its claims, he decided to write what he termed a statement of the labor question. While thus en gaged, the present writer made his acquaintance, from which grew a friendship ripening into a complete unity of thought and purpose. But Mr. Steward's work was not destined to comple tion at his hands. After a protracted illness he died, March I 3, iss3. When it became evident that he could not recover, he made a special request, strongly te-enforced by his friends, that I should complete his unfinished task. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Getting a Living: The Problem of Wealth and Poverty-of Profits, Wages and Trade Unionism To remedy society's many ills, and to attain its magnificent possibilities, the all-inclusive need of course is knowledge of nature's economic and sociological laws, whose observance by men, or non-observance, makes society at any time what it is. To a large extent the same is true of such knowledge with each person individually. The belief that this knowledge can be sufficiently possessed by the people in general appeared in the establishment of popu lar government, and appears now, stronger and more wide spread than ever before, in the dissemination of information by state labor bureaus and by economic societies, and in the nu precedented interest in sociological study among preachers and' teachers, trade unionists, literary club women, and the thought ful in every class. It seems to be true that all economists and labor bodies agree that education in economics is the great desideratum for working people, and, it may be added, for all other people. Hence, in view of the present interest, and of the general study of economics since the rise of trade unionism twenty years ago, the reason why so few have other than a hazy idea of the problem of wealth and poverty seems not to be indifference; nor is it lack of knowledge to be studied, for the investigators and economists have found out nearly enough in most particulars what the truth is. The trouble seems to be that its scattered form has made this truth inaccessible to all not having the mind, the time. And the money to study scores of books and hundreds iof reports and periodicals, and to pick out the truth from a mass of error. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Distribution of Wealth: A Theory of Wages, Interest and Profits It was the claim advanced by Mr. Henry George, that wages are fixed by the product which a man can create by tilling rentless land, that first led me to seek a method by which the product of labor every where may be disentangled from the product of cooperating agents and separately identified; and it was this quest which led to the attainment of the law that is here presented, according to which the wages of all labor tend, under perfectly free com petition, to equal the product that is separately attributable to the labor. The product of the final unit of labor is the same as that of every unit, separately considered; and if normal tendencies could work in perfection, it would be true not only of each unit, but of the working force as a whole, that its product and its pay are identical. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Wage-Workers of America and the Relation of Capital to Labor It is said that all the laboring classes of the civilized world have been, and are, as a body poor. This is an incorrect statement, for the ques tion arises who are the poor and who are the rich Poverty and wealth are at best only relative states or conditions. When the ques tion is viewed philosophically, it is not proper to make a comparison from the standpoint of ownership. Or how much wealth one has, but conditions. One may be miserably poor and have plenty of money. Our object, however, is not to champion the cause of the poor with a View of making everybody rich, or to make the rich richer, or to take from them what by right belongs to them but what we contend for is justice, that all men may have an equal chance under the law of the land to acquire a competency, the same right that nature gives to every man. Consumption, in the economical sense, is the use of wealth. The actual destruction of wealth thereby may be total or partial, rapid or slow, according to the nature of the material and the object to which it is directed. The first two chapters Of the original edition have been almost entirely omitted because part Of the subject matter is no longer as timely as it was in 1906, while the remainder is not absolutely essential. For similar reasons the seven chapters forming the third section Of the work as it first appeared, have been left out Of the present edition. In the ten chapters that have been retained, a few changes have been made, either for the sake Of brevity or in order to bring certain statistical and other statements up to date. In its revised and abridged form, the work is intended primarily for those who wish to Obtain a compre hensive idea of the subject in the smallest possible compass. The writer hopes that it will be found to contain nothing superfluous, and yet to embrace everything that the average reader cares to know concerning the ethical, economic and legal aspects Of the living wage question. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Work, Wages, and Profits: Second Edition Revised and Enlarged The first edition of Mr. Gantt's book appeared in 1910 as a volume of 194 pages, with seven charts, the graphic illustrations and most of the specific examples being drawn from results secured in the textile industries. Since that date a rapid rise has taken place in public attention to the methods used and the results secured, and in the active effort (evidenced by inquiry and undertaking) to obtain advantages corresponding to those so substantially realized in the cases cited. This interest and inquiry have been the principal influence inspiring the enlargement of this book, not only by inclusion of additional instances, but by more detailed development of some features of the work, and the summation of the argument into a comprehensive and entire (even if broadly sketched) outline of a plan of systematic management, based on the policies and methods defined by Mr. Gantt. His experience in the field of labor management covers a quarter-century of close practical application. His special methods, which even yet are but partially and imperfectly understood by many, have been identified with his name for at least half this period. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Progress and Poverty, Vol. 1: An Inquiry Into the Cause of Industrial Depressions and of Increase of Want With Increase of Wealth; The Remedy The views herein set forth were in the main briefly stated in a pamphlet entitled Our Land and Land Policy, published in San Francisco in 1871. I then intended, as soon as I could, to present them more fully, but the opportunity did not for a long time occur. In the meanwhile I became even more firmly convinced of their truth, and saw more completely and clearly their relations; and I also saw how many false ideas and erroneous habits of thought stood in the way of their recognition, and how necessary it was to go over the whole ground. This I have here tried to do, as thoroughly as space would permit. It has been necessary for me to clear away before I could build up, and to write at once for those who have made no previous study of such subjects, and for those who are familiar with economic reason ings; and, so great is the scope of the argument that it has been impossible to treat with the fullness they deserve many of the ques tions raised. What I have most endeavored to do is to establish general principles, trusting to my readers to carry further their applications where this is needed. In certain respects this book will be best appreciated by those who have some knowledge of economic literature; but no previous read ing is necessary to the understanding of the argument or the passing of judgment upon its conclusions. The facts upon which I have relied are not facts which can be verified only by a search through libraries. They are facts of common observation and common knowledge, which every reader can verify for himself, just as he can decide whether the reasoning from them is or is not valid. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Laborer and His Hire Justice Of wages has no fixed standard in money payment. So long as wage payment in dollars and cents is to be regulated in amount by wage competition justice will remain unpracticed, for machines multiply with the multiplication of their human competitors and each new man competes as one, each new machine as thousands. Perhaps exact justice by the money payment system can be arrived at never. Wages, to be fair to producers, must correspond to production. The varying volume of production, one year with another, makes a fixed rate impossible, gauged by the unyielding standard of justice. A fixed rate is a slave rate, - food and clothes sufficient to make the slave profitable being both minimum and maximum. A fixed rate, such as this, not varying with the varying volume and value of products, has, since man has been hired by man, worked the industrial disaster of the class that receives wages. In an industrial society where labor seeks employment a basis for wage rates must be found in the values of production or labor will be the victim of competing captains of industry. When men and machines multiply they who employ both reap profits. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Progress and Poverty, Vol. 2: An Inquiry Into the Cause of Industrial Depressions and of Increase of Want With Increase of Wealth, the Remedy And, so, if one individual work more hours than the average, he will increase his wages; but the wages of all cannot be increased in this way. It is notorious that in occupations where working hours are long, wages are not higher than where working hours are shorter; generally the reverse, for the longer the working day, the more helpless does the laborer become - the less time has he to look around him and develop other powers than those called forth by his work; the less becomes his ability to change his occupation or to take advantage of circum stances. And, so, the individual workman who gets his wife and children to assist him may thus increase his ih come; but in occupations where it has become habitual for the wife and children of the laborer to supplement his work, it is notorious that the wages earned by the whole family do not on the average exceed those of the head of the family in occupations where it is usual for him only to work. Swiss family labor in watch making competes in cheapness with American machinery. The Bohemian cigar makers of New York, who work, men, women, and children, in their tenement-house rooms, have reduced the prices of cigar making to less than the Chinese in San Francisco were getting. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Catechism of Wages and Capital During a temporary absence from home in search of health, almost every glance at a newspaper furnished accounts of strikes by workmen or lockouts by em ployers, caused by disputes on account of the rate of wages, or in consequence of restrictive trades-society rules. Believ ing that a more general knowledge of' the conditions by which wages must at all times be regulated, would prevent these disturbances and the great loss of wealth which is consequent thereon, and prevent also the severe sufferings of the artisans, the writer has made an effort to so simplify that knowledge that every reader shall be able to comprehend and' appreciate it.
