The drive by both public and private colleges and universities to enhance and evaluate program quality is partially fueled by an ever-increasing public demand for institutional accountability (Duderstadt & Womack, 2003; Suskie, 2006). As a result of this demand, two movements are occurring within American higher education -- the movement toward measuring student learning outcomes (SLOs) through outcome-based evaluation (Bogue & Aper, 2000; Schalock, 2001; Welsh & Dey, 2002) and the movement toward greater inclusion of stakeholders in program evaluation (Banta, 2002; Maki, 2004; Miller, 2007). Prior to 2009, the Council for Accreditation of Counseling and Related Educational Programs (CACREP) required accredited counselor education programs to include stakeholders (e.g., faculty, current students, alumni, employers) in program evaluation (CACREP, 2001). With its revised 2009 standards, CACREP began requiring accredited programs to place greater emphasis on SLOs (Cashwell, 2008; Urofsky, 2008). These practices demonstrate CACREP's commitment to quality assurance in the field of counselor education and to counseling students' growth and development (Conrad, Duren, & Haworth, 1998). The Engagement Theory of Program Quality (Haworth & Conrad, 1997) highlights many positive SLOs that result from stakeholder involvement in program evaluation within master's-level graduate programs. As such, Engagement Theory is a potentially useful quality assessment resource for CACREP-accredited programs in their efforts at enhancing and sustaining program quality. The primary purpose of this study was to examine Engagement Theory, which had not been previously tested in counselor education, within the context of CACREP-accredited programs. A total of 481 master's-level counseling students and 63 faculty members representing 68 American colleges and universities participated in the study. Findings revealed that study participants perceived Engagement Theory's 17 attributes of program quality as important indicators of program quality, thus giving validity to Engagement Theory as a potential program evaluation resource with CACREP-accredited counselor education programs. Participants' perceptions of the presence of the attributes varied, indicating that further examination of program quality within CACREP-accredited counselor education programs may be warranted."--Abstract from author supplied metadata.

Book excerpt: The overall purpose of this study was to investigate counselor educators' attitudes towards evidence-based practices (EBPs) and perceived barriers to the inclusion of EBPs in counselor education curricula. Additionally, this study aimed to assess whether counselor educators' level of agreement towards the presence of motivational interviewing (MI) principles in the counseling relationship impacted attitudes towards EBPs. As such, this researcher analyzed four research questions using two instruments and a demographic questionnaire. Two hundred sixty nine counselor educators (39.8% response rate) from the Association of Counselor Education and Supervision responded to an electronic survey, which consisted of the Evidence-Based Practice Attitude Scale (EBPAS; Aarons, 2004), the BARRIERS Scale (Funk, Champagne, Wiese, & Tornquist, 1991), and a demographic questionnaire. Specifically, this study investigated four research questions to determine: (a) the difference in attitude towards adopting EBPs among counselor educators with respect to specific individual factors (i.e. specialized training in evidence-based practices, years of professoriate experience, and primary counselor education focus); (b) the difference in perceived barriers towards adopting EBPs into counselor education curricula among counselor educators with respect to organizational factors (i.e. type of program, status of CACREP accreditation, and faculty position); (c) the influence of EBP attitude on perceived barriers to the inclusion of EBPs in counselor education curricula; and (d) the correlation between counselor educators reported level of agreement towards MI principles' presence in the counseling relationship and their attitude towards EBPs. Multivariate analyses of variance (MANOVA) were computed to analyze the data for the first two research questions, while linear regressions were utilized to compute the data for the last two research questions. In terms of individual factors, study results indicated that neither specialized training in EBPs nor years of professoriate experience resulted in significant differences with regards to attitudes towards EBPs. However, data analysis did reveal a significant difference between counselor educators with a clinical focus and counselor educators with a vocational focus. With regards to organizational factors influence on perceived barriers to the inclusion of EBPs in counselor education curricula, analyses revealed that neither CACREP accreditation nor faculty position resulted in any significant differences. Although, analysis did reveal that counselor educators in masters only programs perceived significantly less barriers to the inclusion of EBPs than did counselor educators in doctorate granting programs. Furthermore, results suggested a negative correlation between attitude towards EBPs and barriers towards the inclusion of EBPs in counselor education curricula, and a positive correlation between counselor educators' agreement towards the inclusion of MI principles in the counseling relationship and their attitudes towards EBPs. Limitations of the study, implications for this study, and recommendations for future research as it relates to EBPs in counselor education and the counseling profession are addressed.

Book excerpt: The purpose of this qualitative multiple case study was to understand how counselor educators (CEs) facilitate learning in their master’s level trauma theory and practice courses. The study addressed two research questions: (a) How do counselor educators choose which trauma content to address in master’s level trauma theory and practices courses? and (b) Which teaching methods do counselor educators utilize to facilitate significant learning in master’s level trauma theory and practice courses? Three CEs participated in this study. All three participants worked in CACREP accredited or aligned programs in three different regions (south, north central, north east). The participants had been employed as counselor educators from 3 years – 15 years. Data sources included two interviews each participant, an open-ended questionnaire completed by each participant, and document review of each instructor’s course syllabus and assignment descriptions. Three methods of teaching were consistent across the three Cases: lecture, discussion, and case study. Themes were examined within and across individual Cases. Case 1, Jade, chose course content and teaching methods based on responsivity to students, instructor awareness of contextual factors and current events, and embracing and capitalizing on instructor expertise and limitations. The hybrid format of the course, mentorship relationships, and program accreditation also impacted course design. Case 2, Jimmy, chose course content and teaching methods based on conceptualizing the role of students as advocates and his role as facilitator, the instructor’s experience, and choosing course methods to facilitate application of material. Additionally, the asynchronous online course format and the instructor’s conceptualization of Bloom’s Taxonomy impacted course design. Case 3, Alex, chose course content and teaching methods based on instructor clinical experience, creating course pedagogy focused on application, wanting to elicitstudent self-awareness, and various student influences. Additionally, the face-to-face format of the course and the use of a co-instructor impacted course design. Cross-case analysis indicated themes related to instructor role, instructor identity, methods of teaching that elicit fundamental change in the learner, and methods of teaching to develop student skill acquisition. Based on these findings, I provide implications for CE and recommendations for future research.
