Book excerpt: There are approximately 4,000 fatalities in crashes involving trucks and buses in the United States each year. Though estimates are wide-ranging, possibly 10 to 20 percent of these crashes might have involved fatigued drivers. The stresses associated with their particular jobs (irregular schedules, etc.) and the lifestyle that many truck and bus drivers lead, puts them at substantial risk for insufficient sleep and for developing short- and long-term health problems. Commercial Motor Vehicle Driver Fatigue, Long-Term Health and Highway Safety assesses the state of knowledge about the relationship of such factors as hours of driving, hours on duty, and periods of rest to the fatigue experienced by truck and bus drivers while driving and the implications for the safe operation of their vehicles. This report evaluates the relationship of these factors to drivers' health over the longer term, and identifies improvements in data and research methods that can lead to better understanding in both areas.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Many North Americans are affected by mental health disorders (MHD) each year [1,2]. One of the most common MHDs is major depression [1,2]. Major depression has many costs for the individual and the economy [3-5]. Those with depression are more likely to experience difficulties sleeping, chronic fatigue, poor physical health, and are at risk of committing suicide when compared to non-depressed individuals [1,6,7]. The overall risk of mortality is higher among those with depression than those without [5]. On the economic level, depression is associated with an increased number of missed days at work (absenteeism) and poor productivity at work (presenteeism) [5]. Depression is estimated to cost the U.S. economy $36.6 billion per year in lost worker productivity [5]. Certain occupations put individuals at greater risk for depression than others. One of these occupations includes long-haul truck drivers. The risk of depression in trucking is higher when compared to at least 19 other occupational types [1,2,8-11]. Long-haul truck driving involves delivering freight to distant locations [12,13]. Truckers are usually on the road for several days at a time [14]. Many also drive overnight and are often alone during their shifts and their work breaks [14,15]. They also experience tight delivery timeliness and are often paid based on how far they drive, or how much freight they can deliver [13,16]. The working conditions of long-haul truckers can result in feels of social isolation and can lead to poor sleep and fatigue [14,15,17]. Many truckers have also reported that they experience stress due to tight and unrealistic delivery deadlines, poor road conditions, and violence at work [16].

Book excerpt: The World Health Organization supports tools and initiatives in Health Impact Assessment to dynamically improve health and well-being across different sectors. Human Impact Assessment (HuIA) is a relatively new concept. It describes an integrated process that encompasses both Health Impact Assessment and Social Impact Assessment and is used to anticipate the effects of programs, projects and decisions on human health and welfare. Sleep occupies approximately one-third of our lives, but its human impact remains largely unrecognized. The prevalence of excessive sleepiness is recognized to be increasing in industrialized societies. Without doubt, sleepiness and fatigue have high costs in terms of both lives lost and socioeconomic impact. For example, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration estimates that up to 4% of all fatal crashes are caused by drowsy drivers and that as many as 100,000 deaths per year in the United States may be due to fatigue-related medical errors. Sleepiness and Human Impact Assessment provides a uniquely comprehensive exploration of many different facets of sleepiness in our 24-hour society from the new HuIA point of view. Among the covered issues are the physiology and pathophysiology of sleep, its relationship to daytime alertness, fatigue and drugs, the relevance of sleep-related fatigue in various occupational settings and public safety. This book will be of assistance to physicians, occupational health professionals, ergonomists, researchers and decision-makers as they strive to understand the full significance of sleepiness and to create a culture of accountability in everyday life without sleep-related risks.

Book excerpt: Concludes that although adequate sleep is the only 100 percent effective "countermeasure" for sleepiness, there are other countermeasures to help make driving safer. Several of the key countermeasures include: education of high-risk populations, the general driving public, and other key groups, such as law enforcement personnel, new technologies to detect and warn drowsy drivers, roadway countermeasures such as continuous shoulder rumble strips and other roadway treatments, increased use of rest areas, regulatory and judicial action.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Written and edited by leading clinicians and researchers in sleep medicine, this is the first book to focus on the causes, consequences and treatment of disorders of excessive sleepiness. Extensive coverage is provided for all known causes of sleepiness, including sleep deprivation, obstructive sleep apnea syndrome, narcolepsy and other hypersomnias of central origin, shift work, and medical and psychiatric disorders. Since many causes of sleepiness are difficult to differentiate from each other, and treatment modalities can vary greatly from one disorder to another, this book helps the clinician to formulate a differential diagnosis that will ultimately lead to the correct diagnosis. Epidemiology, evaluation of the sleepy patient, diagnostic investigations including neuroimaging, subjective and objective testing, cognitive effects of sleepiness, motor vehicle driving issues, medico-legal aspects of sleepiness, and therapy are also discussed in detail. This is an essential resource for neurologists, psychiatrists and sleep specialists.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The purpose of this volume is to seek out, describe, and explain the shared commonalities of stress, fatigue, and workload. To understand and predict human performance response, we have to reach beyond the sterile, information-processing models to incorporate the emotive, affective, or more generally, energetic aspects of cognition. These facets of behavior surface most readily when the individual acts under stress, is faced by significant cognitive workload, or is in the grip of fatigue. However, energetic characteristics are pervasive and exert a vital and ubiquitous influence, even when they are not obviously in play as in extreme circumstances. Indeed, one cannot hope to understand behavior without their inclusion and integration into models and theories. This text addresses such theoretical questions as one of its main thrusts. However, in addition to the drive for scientific understanding, there are requirements in our progressively more utilitarian society which generate the need for a more fundamental understanding of this particular topic.
