Book Synopsis Irregular migrants in Belgium and the Netherlands by : Masja Meeteren
Download or read book Irregular migrants in Belgium and the Netherlands written by Masja Meeteren and published by Amsterdam University Press. This book was released on 2014-08-13 with total page 250 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In 'Irregular Migrants in Belgium and the Netherlands', Masja van Meeteren studies the different ways in which irregular migrants live in Belgium and the Netherlands. The book offers an empirically grounded theoretical critique of the dominant research practice that focuses on 'survival strategies', relies on comparisons of migrant communities and overemphasizes structural explanations. Instead, Irregular Migrants takes irregular migrants ́ aspirations as a starting point of analysis. Based on this innovative research approach, key questions are answered regarding the lives of irregular migrants. How can we understand their patterns of economic and social incorporation, the transnational activities they engage in, and the significance of different forms of capital? Drawing on intensive participant observation, as well as more than two hundred in-depth interviews with irregular migrants and representatives of organizations that are involved with them, Irregular Migrants develops much-needed contextualized insights. As such, it sheds new light on previous research findings and various deadlocked scholarly debates on irregular migrants in Western societies. -Masja van Meeteren works as an Assistant Professor in the department of Criminology at Leiden University.

Book Synopsis Geographies of Asylum in Europe and the Role of European Localities by : Birgit Glorius
Download or read book Geographies of Asylum in Europe and the Role of European Localities written by Birgit Glorius and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2019-10-03 with total page 268 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This open access book describes how the numerous arrivals of asylum seekers since 2015 shaped reception and integration processes in Europe. It addresses the structuration of asylum and reception systems, and spaces and places of reception on European, national, regional and local level. It also analyses perceptions and discourses on asylum and refugees, their evolvement and the consequences for policy development. Furthermore, it examines practices and policy developments in the field of refugee reception and integration. The volume shows and explains a variety of refugee reception and integration strategies and practices as specific outcome of multilevel governance processes in Europe. By addressing and contextualizing those multiple experiences of asylum seeker reception, the book is a valuable contribution to the literature on migration and integration, societal development and political culture in Europe.
Book Synopsis Images of Immigrants and Refugees in Western Europe by : Leen d’Haenens
Download or read book Images of Immigrants and Refugees in Western Europe written by Leen d’Haenens and published by Leuven University Press. This book was released on 2019-05-14 with total page 209 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Perception and representation of newcomers and immigrants The topic of migration has become particularly contentious in national and international debates. Media have a discernable impact on overall societal attitudes towards this phenomenon. Polls show time and again that immigration is one of the most important issues occupying people’s minds. This book examines the dynamic interplay between media representations of migrants and refugees on the one hand and the governmental and societal (re)actions to these on the other. Largely focusing on Belgium and Sweden, this collection of interdisciplinary research essays attempts to unravel the determinants of people’s preferences regarding migration policy, expectations towards newcomers, and economic, humanitarian and cultural concerns about immigration’s effect on the majority population’s life. Whilst migrants and refugees remain voiceless and highly underrepresented in the legacy media, this volume allows their voices to be heard.
