Book excerpt: Photostatic reproduction of the text of the "Ganoda" chant of the Little Water Medicine Society of the Seneca Indians, probably transcribed by John Jacket, descendant of the Seneca chief Red Jacket, and chief singer of the "Pleasant Valley" lodge of the Society at Cattaraugus, N.Y.. One of the most important and best organized secret societies of the Seneca Indians was the Little Water Medicine Society, the ritual ceremonies of which were held on the fifth night of the new moon four times a year, to preserve the potency of the "secret medicine," or "niganĕga'á'", medicine bundles deposited by each member on the Altar of the Mystery. Members were persons for whom the ritual had been performed during sickness, or in response to dreams about the society. The ms. includes the text of the chants arranged in numbered stanzas, as well as various notations on the money contributions made by members of the Society between 1849 and 1851. There are scattered monetary entries throughout, the last one dated Sept. 14, 1870.
