Book Synopsis John Paul II in the Holy Land-- in His Own Words by : Yehezkel Landau
Download or read book John Paul II in the Holy Land-- in His Own Words written by Yehezkel Landau and published by Paulist Press. This book was released on 2005 with total page 180 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Pope John Paul II has been the undisputed leader in fostering Jewish-Christian dialogue for over twenty-five years. He has labored intensely to change the hearts and minds of both sides and has never been afraid to acknowledge the sins committed by Christian people against Jews. His visit to the Middle East in March 2000, when he was able to visit the places where Jesus had lived and walked, was a moving and extraordinarily rich experience, both for him personally and for the Catholic Church. However, it also gave rise to a certain amount of rumor and misunderstanding among Jewish, Christian, and Muslim residents of the region. This book addresses these doubts and suspicions by documenting the pope's itinerary and recording the speeches that the pope gave at each stop along the journey. Replete with commentaries by Yehezkel Landau of Hartford Seminary and Michael McGarry of the Tantur Ecumenical Institute, along with maps and photos, this book is a historical record of a most historic pilgrimage."--BOOK JACKET.Title Summary field provided by Blackwell North America, Inc. Book Synopsis Words from a Wide Land by : William D. Barney
Download or read book Words from a Wide Land written by William D. Barney and published by University of North Texas Press. This book was released on 1993 with total page 220 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: If you enjoyed books like A Sand County Almanac or A Pilgrim at Tinker's Creek, you’ll love Words from a Wide Land. Barney brings insights of people and places, natural phenomena, birds, animals, insects, and other things he has encountered in many years of living and traveling. In these entries (a year’s worth, though not in chronological order by year), can be found humor, romance, delight, philosophy, even terror. He has measured the life about him with a flair, which at times bursts into poetry. From the book: “September 6, 1977. The migration of birds resembles Pickett’s Charge. Thousands are lost in frontal collisions with skyscrapers, are picked off by rough predators, buffeted by wind and storm. But they keep coming on, advancing, year after year, as if there were no Cemetery Ridge.” May 12, 1967. The Swainson thrush has been fluting his little strangled bugle call from the red mulberry tree now several days. It is much like the wood thrush's call in quality, but reduced in an echo chamber, to a mere whisper. Still, it is an unmistakable signature of one week in May, which I have hardly heard at any other time.”
Book Synopsis Earth Emotions by : Glenn A. Albrecht
Download or read book Earth Emotions written by Glenn A. Albrecht and published by Cornell University Press. This book was released on 2019-05-15 with total page 257 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: As climate change and development pressures overwhelm the environment, our emotional relationships with Earth are also in crisis. Pessimism and distress are overwhelming people the world over. In this maelstrom of emotion, solastalgia, the homesickness you have when you are still at home, has become, writes Glenn A. Albrecht, one of the defining emotions of the twenty-first century. Earth Emotions examines our positive and negative Earth emotions. It explains the author's concept of solastalgia and other well-known eco-emotions such as biophilia and topophilia. Albrecht introduces us to the many new words needed to describe the full range of our emotional responses to the emergent state of the world. We need this creation of a hopeful vocabulary of positive emotions, argues Albrecht, so that we can extract ourselves out of environmental desolation and reignite our millennia-old biophilia—love of life—for our home planet. To do so, he proposes a dramatic change from the current human-dominated Anthropocene era to one that will be founded, materially, ethically, politically, and spiritually on the revolution in thinking being delivered by contemporary symbiotic science. Albrecht names this period the Symbiocene. With the current and coming generations, "Generation Symbiocene," Albrecht sees reason for optimism. The battle between the forces of destruction and the forces of creation will be won by Generation Symbiocene, and Earth Emotions presents an ethical and emotional odyssey for that victory.
Book Synopsis An Example for All the Land by : Kate Masur
Download or read book An Example for All the Land written by Kate Masur and published by Univ of North Carolina Press. This book was released on 2010-10-04 with total page 376 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An Example for All the Land reveals Washington, D.C. as a laboratory for social policy in the era of emancipation and the Civil War. In this panoramic study, Kate Masur provides a nuanced account of African Americans' grassroots activism, municipal politics, and the U.S. Congress. She tells the provocative story of how black men's right to vote transformed local affairs, and how, in short order, city reformers made that right virtually meaningless. Bringing the question of equality to the forefront of Reconstruction scholarship, this widely praised study explores how concerns about public and private space, civilization, and dependency informed the period's debate over rights and citizenship.

Book Synopsis Aboriginal Customary Law: A Source of Common Law Title to Land by : Ulla Secher
Download or read book Aboriginal Customary Law: A Source of Common Law Title to Land written by Ulla Secher and published by Bloomsbury Publishing. This book was released on 2014-12-01 with total page 534 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Described as 'ground-breaking' in Kent McNeil's Foreword, this book develops an alternative approach to conventional Aboriginal title doctrine. It explains that aboriginal customary law can be a source of common law title to land in former British colonies, whether they were acquired by settlement or by conquest or cession from another colonising power. The doctrine of Common Law Aboriginal Customary Title provides a coherent approach to the source, content, proof and protection of Aboriginal land rights which overcomes problems arising from the law as currently understood and leads to more just results. The doctrine's applicability in Australia, Canada and South Africa is specifically demonstrated. While the jurisprudential underpinnings for the doctrine are consistent with fundamental common law principles, the author explains that the Australian High Court's decision in Mabo provides a broader basis for the doctrine: a broader basis which is consistent with a re-evaluation of case-law from former British colonies in Africa, as well as from the United States, New Zealand and Canada. In this context, the book proffers a reconceptualisation of the Crown's title to land in former colonies and a reassessment of conventional doctrines, including the doctrine of tenure and the doctrine of continuity. 'With rare exceptions ... the existing literature does not probe as deeply or question fundamental assumptions as thoroughly as Dr Secher does in her research. She goes to the root of the conceptual problems around the legal nature of Indigenous land rights and their vulnerability to extinguishment in the former colonial empire of the Crown. This book is a formidable contribution that I expect will be influential in shifting legal thinking on Indigenous land rights in progressive new directions.'
