Book excerpt: Excerpt from Word and Sentence Book a Graded Course in Spelling, Vol. 1 Spelling has an important place as a language exercise, and ability to use the pen in taking sentences from dictation is an efficient aid to composition. Writing sentences from dictation compels attention to details besides spelling. The correct use of capitals and punctuation marks, the division of words into syllables, and the selection of words which have homonyms cannot be overlooked. If proficiency in these could be attained, the instruction in composition would be relieved of many difficulties. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Progressive Course in Spelling, Vol. 1 IN recent years the study of English has received more attention in high schools and colleges than ever before. In some public schools, however, there has been a tendency to neglect or slight such fundamental phases of English work as spelling and pronunciation by making them simply inci dental to other studies. As a result, business men who em ploy pupils from the grammar-school grades find many poorly equipped in spelling, and high-school instructors complain that many students, for the same cause, are not well prepared for their work. The Progressive Course in Spelling has been prepared with the hope that its use would awaken an interest in and encourage the study of words. Attention is invited to the grading and grouping of its contents. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Graded School Speller, Vol. 1 The most important features which characterize the books of this series are the following: words are presented at the same time in columns and in use; they are used not in dry, isolated sentences, but in sentences naturally connected in describing the manifold interests, occupations, and experiences of childhood, in telling children's classic stories, in biographies of great men, in describing historical events, in explaining the chief features of the government of city, state, and nation. All this matter is carefully graded both in respect to the words and the thought, and is pre sented in a way to interest and instruct. The pupil is conscious of the meaning and the use of the word as he learns to spell it. If the context does not make the meaning of a word clear to a pupil, it does enable him to use his dictionary intelligently in getting the meaning of the word. By means of this method of presentation words are reviewed, many of the more difficult ones repeatedly. This review is not a mere mechanical repetition of the isolated word; each time the word recurs it is in use. This is the most effective kind of review. At the same time the meaning of the word is becoming, for the child, broader, fuller, and more clearly defined. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The First Book, Word and Sentence Work, Easy Steps in Spelling Outline. - The poor results obtained by attempting to teach spell ing in an Incidental, desultory way have led to a demand for regular graded work in spelling, similar to that done in Arithmetic and Lan guage. Spelling-books have been made to meet this demand, but generally they are neither graded to the capacity of the pupils nor simple enough to be used at the very beginning of school life, when the forms of words can be most easily impressed on the child's mind. This will naturally be true if we attempt to group words according to their meaning; as for instance, words indicating color, names of vehicles, names of flowers, geographical names, etc. In the study of spelling, what the pupil needs to consider first is not the finer shades of meaning, the parts of speech, etc. These belong to language study, and take their proper places in another part of the school curriculum. The thing to be considered first, and to be made prominent, is the use of letters to express sound; and the words should be grouped, therefore, always with reference to this basis. This plan has been closely followed in the Grade Spellers, which, as their name indicates, are arranged for the various grades in the school course, the first book being simple enough for the work done in the first two years of school life. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Mastery of Words a Course in Spelling Arranged for Grades One to Five Inclusive, Vol. 1: A Series of Lessons The Mastery of Words provides a course in Spelling for all grades. Book One is intended for the first five grades; Book Two is arranged for Grades Six, Seven, and Eight. Books One and Two are combined in a complete edition, to which this pref ace relates. Children do not learn to spell through merely repeating in order the letters which make up words. Some children misspell because their pronunciation is slovenly. They do not hear the correct sound of the word. They must learn to hear truly. Others misspell because they do not clearly visualize the form of the word. They must be taught to give energetic attention to the printed form to see clearly. But even then children fail to spell correctly if they are completely ignorant of the pho netic value of the letters which make up the word. There is no remedy for such failures except constant attention to the sounds of letters in words. The Mastery of Words develops these powers. It provides for constant repetition of the ordinary phonograms which are regular in the majority of words. It secures clear enunciation, thus helping to overcome bad habits in speaking. It teaches the pupil to analyze words so that he is conscious of the real problem to be grappled with in spelling; and all the way along it provides exercises which prepare for the use of the dictionary. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Jones Spelling Book, Vol. 1: Grades Two, Three and Four If there is any subject in the common school whose teaching has been a disappointment to teachers themselves, that subject is spelling. In spite of new and improved methods of teaching spelling, in spite of more time spent upon spelling, and in spite of efforts to reform English spelling, students throughout the eight grades of our public schools continue to disappoint us in their spelling. Then, too, the high school graduate seems as likely as ever to mar his thesis by frequent misspelling; the letters of business men are far from satisfactory in spelling; and, finally, the college graduate continues to show us that he is by no means a master of spelling. This is a formidable array of evidence against our teaching of spelling, and from every quarter comes the cry, What is the matter with our spelling teaching? The answer to this question may come from either or both of two sources; namely, (1) our spelling material, or word lists, may be at fault, and (2) our methods of teaching these lists may be bad. But when we note the different methods that have been used in teaching spelling in the last few years, and apparently with no great difference in ultimate success, it would seem that it is time for us to investigate our spelling material. Are the spelling lists which we are giving our students good or bad? Are these lists made up of words which children actually use, grade for grade, in their own free written speech? Or are they full of words which are as far beyond these children as our reading and arithmetic materials once were? It is this significant question that prompted the author of this book to conduct an eight years' research in the field of spelling material. Since this spelling book is based on the results of that research, a brief description of the same is here given.
