Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Native orchids are increasingly threatened by pressure from population growth and development but, nonetheless, still present a welcome surprise to observant hikers in every state and province. Compiled and illustrated by long-time orchid specialist Paul Martin Brown, this pocket guide to the woodland and bog rein orchids forms part of a series that will cover all the wild orchids of the continental United States and Canada. Brown provides a description, general distributional information, time of flowering, and habitat requirements for each species as well as a complete list of hybrids and the many different growth and color forms that can make identifying orchids so challenging. For the woodland and bog rein orchids, which make up some of the most delicate and subtly colored of all wild orchids, he includes information on nineteen species, four subspecies and varieties, and seven hybrids. The genus Platanthera is the largest genus of orchids to be found in North America north of Mexico; the woodland and bog rein orchids comprise a significant group of species found throughout much of temperate U.S. and Canada. The luminously green rein orchids, so-called because of the resemblance of some of the flowers to the reins used on horses, are especially abundant in rich woodlands, wetlands, and bogs in the more northerly and cooler habitats. Most are easy to identify based upon their general appearance, range, and time of flowering. Answering three simple questions—when, where, and how does it grow?—and comparing the living plants with the striking photos in this backpack-friendly laminated guide and the information in the simple key should enable both professional and amateur naturalists to achieve the satisfaction of identifying a specific orchid.

Book excerpt: In this eloquent plea for compassion and respect for all species, journalist and gardener Nancy Lawson describes why and how to welcome wildlife to our backyards. Through engaging anecdotes and inspired advice, profiles of home gardeners throughout the country, and interviews with scientists and horticulturalists, Lawson applies the broader lessons of ecology to our own outdoor spaces. Detailed chapters address planting for wildlife by choosing native species; providing habitats that shelter baby animals, as well as birds, bees, and butterflies; creating safe zones in the garden; cohabiting with creatures often regarded as pests; letting nature be your garden designer; and encouraging natural processes and evolution in the garden. The Humane Gardener fills a unique niche in describing simple principles for both attracting wildlife and peacefully resolving conflicts with all the creatures that share our world.

Book excerpt: "In today's hectic world, many of us are looking for ways to slow down, take time out, and calm our busy minds. The benefits of doing this are well documented for overworked adults. However, there's an increasing focus on how much children can gain from regular, quiet, meditative practice. An absorbing pastime like whittling in a peaceful woodland setting offers exactly that. With an emphasis on safety and adult supervision, this book presents a range of simple and fun projects that children can make and enjoy hours of play with afterwards--projects such as a kazoo, mini furniture, duck call, whimmy diddle, rhythm sticks and elder wand."--Publisher's website.

Book excerpt: August 1940 - After a bomb explodes in Gwen's street during the Birmingham Blitz, she is sent to the safety of her eccentric aunt's woodland cottage. But she soon discovers that the countryside has its own peculiar dangers. The woods are alive with strange, magical creatures wielding frightening powers. To protect herself and her new friends, Gwen must face them, and outwit them, alone. "In 'Greencoats' the magic feels real and the reality magical. Tense, compassionate and lyrical, I devoured it in a weekend. Highly recommended." Caroline Lawrence - author of The Roman Mysteries 'Greencoats', is a middle grade historical fantasy set in 1940 during the Birmingham Blitz. The story is told from the perspective of a resourceful girl evacuated to Shropshire and brings nature, myth, and history together in a cathartic adventure. The narrative blends our pressing concern for dwindling natural spaces with an abiding interest in the supernatural, exploring issues of mental health, friendship and the fallout of war.

Edible plants are often the most accessible and intelligent food choice, provided you are aware of a plant's nutritional value. Knowing which plants are edible and their relative caloric value is key to determining what to eat. This simplified waterproof guide focuses on 23 common plants that are widespread in the eastern woodlands of the United States (though many are found in other locations as well) and how to harvest and prepare them. It also includes information on the caloric values of different plant parts and dangerous plants to avoid. Developed in collaboration with noted survival expert and master woodsman Dave Canterbury, this is one of a 10-part series on survival skills. Made in the USA.
