Book excerpt: Crossing the boundaries of genre with its unrivalled storytelling, Diana Gabaldon’ s new novel is a gift both to her millions of loyal fans and to the lucky readers who have yet to discover her. In the ten years since her extraordinary debut novel, Outlander, was published, beloved author Diana Gabaldon has entertained scores of readers with her heart-stirring stories and remarkable characters. The four volumes of her bestselling saga, featuring eighteenth-century Scotsman James Fraser and his twentieth-century, time-travelling wife, Claire Randall, boasts nearly 5 million copies in the U.S. The story of Outlander begins just after the Second World War, when a British field nurse named Claire Randall walks through a cleft stone in the Scottish highlands and is transported back some two hundred years to 1743. Here, now, is The Fiery Cross, the eagerly awaited fifth volume in this remarkable, award-winning series of historical novels. The year is 1771, and war is approaching. Jamie Fraser’ s wife has told him so. Little as he wishes to, he must believe it, for hers is a gift of dreadful prophecy – a time-traveller’s certain knowledge. To break his oath to the Crown will brand him a traitor; to keep it is certain doom. Jamie Fraser stands in the shadow of the fiery cross – a standard that leads nowhere but to the bloody brink of war.

Book excerpt: Taxocracy: What You Don’t Know About Taxes and How They Rule Your Daily Life won’t help you lower your tax bill, but it will help you understand how politicians use taxes to influence our lives, how taxes harm the economy, and why we need a simpler tax system. Did you ever wonder why the costs of health care, housing, and college tuition keep going up? Or how your neighbor could afford that fancy electric car? Or why there are so many hard seltzers on the market? Your first guess might not be “taxes,” but they play a big role. We live in a world ruled by taxes—a taxocracy. History is full of misguided tax policies that led to “see-through” buildings, tax-free attics, three-wheeled cars, women in children’s clothing, and baked chips to go along with our hard seltzer. Written by former Tax Foundation CEO Scott Hodge, Taxocracy: What You Don’t Know About Taxes and How They Rule Your Daily Life uses amusing lessons from past tax policies gone wrong to explore how the US tax code caused serious consequences, affecting how we get our health insurance, the price of a college education, what car we buy, where we bank, and, in some cases, even when we die. Taxocracy outlines economic principles for designing a tax code that doesn’t rule our daily lives—a tax code that promotes economic growth, free-enterprise, and takes the politics out of tax policy.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Absurdity and Injustice of the Window Tax: Considered With Especial Reference to the New Survey, 1841 IN submitting the following pages to the public, the writer is actuated chiefly by a desire of redressing a manifest and undeniable grievance, which has long been acknowledged to press with peculiar hardship upon the middling classes. He has not gone out of his way to attack the Window Duty, but finding himself oppressed and aggrieved thereby he hesitated not to grapple with the foe. Neither should he in the present embarrassing state of the finances of the country have stepped forward in this manner if it had not been for the asperity and rigour of the executive in the New Survey, which has certainly exceeded that of any former one, and which he thinks has gone beyond the intentions of the legislature, and over strained the bow. There is a point beyond which the force of pressure cannot go with safety, and it is to be hoped that the greatest good may result from this apparent evil. One. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Second Edition 2024 This book explains why the UK tax year begins on 6 April and traces the history of the old tax year which ran from 25 March. It also covers other aspects of calendar history and related issues, including the continuing application of the 1750 British calendar reform statute to the USA and elsewhere. The move from the Julian to the Gregorian calendar in 1752 resulted in the omission of 11 days from September 1752. The omitted days were later added to the tax year and that apparently meant a new tax year beginning on 5 April - not 6 April. There are various explanations for the addition of a further day so the year began on 6 April, including the suggestion that a day was added in 1800. In fact the old tax year ran “from” 25 March and an ancient legal rule said “from” meant the year began on the following day, 26 March. Hence adding 11 days to 26 March produced a new tax year beginning on 6 April. It is often said that the Treasury extended the tax year by 11 days to avoid losing money. This is untrue. The Second Edition revises and expands particularly the key explanation on the way the tax year changed.
