Book excerpt: Excerpt from History of Woman Suffrage, Vol. 2 of 3: 1861-1876 IN presenting to our readers the second volume of the History of Woman Suffrage, we gladly return our thanks to the press for the many favorable notices we have received from leading journals, both in the Old world and the new. The words of cordial approval from a large circle of friends, and especially from women well known in periodical literature, have been to us a constant stimulus during the toilsome months we have spent in gathering material for these pages. It was our purpose to have condensed the records of the last twenty years in a second volume, but so many new questions in regard to Citizenship, State rights, and National power, indirectly bearing on the political rights of women, grew out of the civil war, that the arguments and decisions in Congress and the Supreme Courts have combined to swell these pages beyond our most liberal calculations, with much valuable material that can not be condensed nor ignored, making a third volume inevitable. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Case for Woman Suffrage: A Bibliography This bibliography of books, pamphlets, and magazine articles dealing with woman suffrage has been prepared by a young college woman, Margaret Ladd Franklin, who graduated from Bryn Mawr College in 1908. During her college course she and many of her classmates became deeply interested in the question of woman suffrage. In talking to them and other young college women the President of the National College Equal Suffrage League had occasion to observe that many of the old fashioned arguments most successful in the past seemed to have lost their compelling power, while certain theoretical arguments making a strong intellectual appeal and certain other practical arguments dealing with modem social conditions seemed to carry instant conviction. In the light of such discussions it seemed desirable that so far as possible all the existing arguments for woman suffrage should be carefully reread and classified from the point of view of college women of to-day, and Miss Franklin was accordingly asked to prepare this bibliography for the College Equal Suffrage League. She has spent many weeks in the Congressional Library in Washington and has herself read all the books and pamphlets which she mentions. The stars of praise, the trenchant criticisms, and the illuminating comments are wholly her own. Were it otherwise the bibliography would lose its value and its special appeal to college women. Only in two or three instances when saints of our suffrage calendar had unwisely adventured themselves into the world of literature and had received at her hands too black a mark was it suggested that she should soften a somewhat drastic comment. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Suffragette: The History of the Women's Militant Suffrage Movement, 1905 1910 This history of the Women's Suffrage agitation is written at a time when the question is in the very forefront of British politics. What the immediate future holds for those women who are most actively engaged in fighting for their political freedom no one can foretell, but one thing is certain: complete victory for their cause is not far distant. When the long struggle for the enfranchisement of women is over, those who read the history of the movement will wonder at the blindness that led the Government of the day to obstinately resist so simple and obvious a measure of justice. The men and women of the coming time will, I am persuaded, be filled with admiration for the patient work of the early pioneers and the heroic determination and persistence in spite of coercion, repression, misrepresentation, and insult of those who fought the later militant fight. Perhaps the women born in the happier days that are to come, while rejoicing in the inheritance that we of to-day are preparing for them, may sometimes wish that they could have lived in the heroic days of stress and struggle and have shared with us the joy of battle, the exaltation that comes of sacrifice of self for great objects and the prophetic vision that assures us of the certain triumph of this twentieth-century fight for human emancipation. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Women's Victory and After: Personal Reminiscences, 1911-1918 I wish to dedicate this little book to the thousands of faithful friends gallant comrades whose brave unwearied work, steadfastly maintained through many years, made Women's Suffrage in Great Britain no longer a dream but a reality. Many of them have passed away, but their work, its results, and our gratitude remain. Whether in the flesh or out of the flesh, I have been accustomed to think of them as the Goodly Fellowship of the Prophets; for they foresaw what was coming, proclaimed it, and devoted themselves in making it come in the right way. All my gratitude goes out to them, especially to - E.G.A.: C.C.O.: E.F.R.: I.O.F.: A.G.: R.G.: E.P.: E.A.: R.S.: E.G.: H.A.: S.G.: I.H.W.: E.I. Through the kindness of the Proprietors of Punch, I am allowed to use as illustrations some of their excellent pictures demonstrating the growth of the suffrage movement. For this permission, and also for their valued support and sympathy, continued over many years, my heartfelt thanks are hereby tendered. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Women's Suffrage: A Short History of a Great Movement The Reform Movement was agitating the whole country at this period, and political excitement led to political riots, burning of buildings, and general orgies of massacre and destruction. The Government of the day had their share in the blunders and stupidities which led to these crimes, and in none were these qualities more conspicuous than in the riot at Manchester, which came to be known as the Peterloo Massacre in August 1819, in which six people were killed and about thirty seriously injured. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Women's Suffrage and National Danger: A Plea for the Ascendency of Man Possibly it is now rather late in the history of the Women's Suffrage movement for the appearance of a treatise upon the subject. Yet I cannot but think that, great as is the bulk of the literature wherein the arguments of those who favour the movement are set forth, the comprehensive exposition of those reasons which may be fairly suggested as justifying opposition has been comparatively neglected. Notwithstanding the brilliant speeches which have been delivered by some of those who have in Parliament resisted the claims on behalf of women, so complete has been the omission to systematise and aggressively circulate the leading outlines of their case, that I very much doubt whether the majority of judicially-minded citizens are sufficiently in possession of them. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Shall Women Vote?: A Book for Men Considered from the viewpoint of the effect of the new woman's rights laws upon the rights of men, one cannot intelligently appreciate nor discuss the question Should women have the right to vote without knowing that this question involves the most vital point in the history of a movement which 'has been in progress for a gen cration, - a movement which has as its object the stripping of men of their rights, and the trans ferring of them to women and children. The question must be viewed in the light of what men have already suffered by this movement, and what this final demand would mean to them.
