Book excerpt: This booklet of case studies from Kenya, Mexico, and Nepal, deals with the issue of estimating labor contributions of women in developing countries. Developmental planning does not take into account the value of home production by women and children. In the case of Kenya, which is no exception to any developing country, the production done at the local level for the benefit of women, and that which is classified as the urban informal sector is totally excluded from the gross production calculation. Furthermore, factors such as seasonal variation of household labor demands, family life cycle, presence or absence of men in the family, and economic status of women are not accounted for. With the underestimation of women's productivity, their value to the national economy is likewise overlooked, and in turn women gain little status in such economies. In Kenya, there is currently a movement to bring out gender differentials by collecting data from sectors that involve women and analyze the data by sex. To better classify the working population by type of activity, especially in the heterogeneous labor force as in Mexico, answers to services generated and description of type of establishment are necessary. Activities whereby women dominate must be vividly classified. Definition problems of productive activities attributed to females is yet another difficulty in occupational and industrial classification. In Nepal, however, classification by type of occupation is inadequate, specifically for women, where the definition of jobs is consistent with modern jobs, causing a misallocation of female tasks. Clearly, the International Standard for assessing women's employment is inadequate, it is a system which needs to be reviewed and take into account the economic differences in each society which define productivity roles for women.
