Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Women of the French Revolution The Women of the French Revolution is so vast a theme that hitherto, even in France, it has not yet met with anything like exhaustive treatment. Michelet himself admits that the title of his book, Les F emmes de la Revolution,1 is misleading, and that he has written of a few heroines rather than of the mass of revolutionary women. A much later writer, M. Adrien Lasserre, in his work on Women's Participa tion in the Revolution2 says that he has found it impossible to cover completely a field so extensive. The attempt which M. Lasserre has renounced cannot be made here. All I hope to do is to give some idea of the rank and file of revolutionary women and of their famous leaders, during little more than a brief period of five memorable years. That period extends from May, 1789, until July, 1794, with some glances now and then, before and after. One aspect of this subject of revolutionary women - their connection with the secret societies of the day I have purposely ignored. It is obscure and highly controversial. Unfortunately, though these societies have been much written about, and especially of late, it has often been in a partisan spirit. This book will constantly deal with parties, but I trust not in the spirit of a partisan. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: During the French Revolution, hundreds of domestic and working-class women of Paris were interrogated, examined, accused, denounced, arrested, and imprisoned for their rebellious and often hostile behavior. Here, for the first time in English translation, Dominique Godineau offers an illuminating account of these female revolutionaries. As nurturing and tender as they are belligerent and contentious, these are not singular female heroines but the collective common women who struggled for bare subsistence by working in factories, in shops, on the streets, and on the home front while still finding time to participate in national assemblies, activist gatherings, and public demonstrations in their fight for the recognition of women as citizens within a burgeoning democracy. Relying on exhaustive research in historical archives, police accounts, and demographic resources at specific moments of the Revolutionary period, Godineau describes the private and public lives of these women within their precise political, social, historical, and gender-specific contexts. Her insightful and engaging observations shed new light on the importance of women as instigators, activists, militants, and decisive revolutionary individuals in the crafting and rechartering of their political and social roles as female citizens within the New Republic.

With gusts of wind that swooped around corners to clutch at the skirts of those returning from the mockery of jus tice in the Place de la Concorde. The sun was going down behind a mass of gray smother, as if it sought to hide its face from the things it had seen that day. But the groups gathering in the Rue Poulet saw noth ing of the sun or its departure, so intent were they upon living over again, conversationally, the awful tragedy of the past hours. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Woman of the Revolution: Theroigne De Mericourt Revolution I found myself face to face with a great difficulty. It was either necessary to presume a more thorough knowledge of the events of 1789 - 9 3 on the part of my readers than is general, or make constant digressions from the main theme of my story as it proceeded. Inequalities have resulted from a vain endeavour to avoid these pitfalls. Inequalities, how ever, are to be expected when stirring incidents taking place against a background fraught with huge possi bilities are viewed through the eyes of a single figure of the crowd. That figure is of a woman who has more claim to recognition for her personal characteristics than for her performance of outstanding actions either noble or valorous. One of Theroigne's chief charms lies in her elusiveness. While she has remained practically unknown to English readers, the French have never lost interest in the doings of a woman of whom they knew little that was authentic and in whom their curiosity was aroused by the imaginative accounts of Lamartine, Lairtullier, and lamothe-langon, on the one hand, and the coarse satires of the royalist pamphlets and journals on the other.
