Book Synopsis Court and Country Politics in the Plays of Beaumont and Fletcher by : Philip J. Finkelpearl
Download or read book Court and Country Politics in the Plays of Beaumont and Fletcher written by Philip J. Finkelpearl and published by Princeton University Press. This book was released on 2014-07-14 with total page 273 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The seventeenth-century English collaborative authors Francis Beaumont and John Fletcher were not only the most popular playwrights of their day but also literary figures highly esteemed by the great critics of the age, Jonson and Dryden. Concentrating on the passions of the royalty and high nobility in a courtly atmosphere, their dramas are now usually seen as epitomizing a decadent turn in theater at the end of the Jacobean period. Philip Finkelpearl sets out to change this view by revealing the subtle political challenges contained in the plays and by showing that they criticize rather than exemplify false values. The result is a wholly new conception of this pair of dramatists and of the entire question of the relationship between the Crown and the theater in their time. Finkelpearl presents new biographical material revealing that Beaumont and Fletcher had good and sufficient reasons to be critical of the court and the king, and he shows that their most important works--especially The Knight of the Burning Pestle, Philaster, A King and No King, and The Maid's Tragedy have such criticism as a central concern. Court and Country Politics in the Plays of Beaumont and Fletcher offers much information on the nature of the "public" and "private" theaters at which these plays were presented and on Jacobean censorship. The book is an impressive explanation of why Beaumont and Fletcher were a central force in the Age of Shakespeare. Originally published in 1990. Volume XXIV, "Perspectives on Renaissance Drama," includes essays that focus on a wide range of topics about the drama in England, France, and Italy, including female-female eroticism, women's silences in Renaissance texts, early Jacobean political tragedy, and virginity in John Lyly's Love's Metamorphosis.

Book Synopsis The Witlings and The Woman-Hater by : Frances Burney
Download or read book The Witlings and The Woman-Hater written by Frances Burney and published by Broadview Press. This book was released on 2002-09-19 with total page 330 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This Broadview edition pairs two of Frances Burney’s linked comedies. They both present the character of Lady Smatter, a “femme savante” whose lineage may be traced back to Molière; they both centre on the misfortunes of the “elle” figure, the dispossessed heiress and wife who appears frequently in Burney’s fiction; and they both criticize a culture of misogyny that breeds suspicion and resentment. The Witlings, lighter and more comic, derives from late seventeenth-century conventions; The Woman-Hater, more melodramatic, both expresses and warns against the excessive sensibility of romanticism. Together, these two plays constitute a miniature history of English drama from the Restoration to the French Revolution and beyond. This edition contains a valuable selection of appendices, including: Burney’s “Epilogue to Gerilda”; letters and diary entries; contemporary writings on comedy; and Burney’s cast-list for The Woman-Hater.
