Book excerpt: Women Telling Nations highlights how, from the 16th to the 19th centuries, European women, as readers and writers, contributed to the construction of national identities. The book, which presents twenty countries, is divided into four parts. First, we examine how women belonged to nations: they represented territories and political or religious communities in their own style. Second, we deal with the ways in which women wrote the nation: the network of relationships in which they were involved that were not necessarily national or territorial. The legitimation that women writers succeeded in finding is emphasised in the third section, while in the fourth we analyse how and why women were open to the outside world, beyond the country’s borders. Women Telling Nations underlines the quantitative importance of the circulation of these women’s writings and demonstrates the extent as well as the impact of the international cross-fertilisation of nations, especially by and for women: focusing on routes rather than roots.

Even with more than seven decades of Holocaust research and writing behind us, there are many specialist topics within Holocaust historiography that have not been dealt with in detail, including the role of Turkey. This has caused the researchers of the Holocaust in other countries to often include limited, outdated, and sometimes incorrect data about Turkey in their studies. Within the flood of publications on Holocaust history that has been rising since the 1990s, and which has maintained its momentum ever since, studies on the role of Turkey remain comparatively underexplored. Selahattin Ülkümen, a Turk, is the only Muslim diplomat who thus far has been designated as “Righteous among the Nations” by the Yad Vashem (the Holocaust Martyrs and Heroes Authority) in Jerusalem for saving, at his own risk, the lives of 42 Jews in Rhodes from the Nazis in 1944. Thus momentarily thrust into prominence, he excites a certain curiosity. However, current scholarship has failed to reveal a single monograph or even an article in periodical literature on him. Neither Turk nor Westerner has devoted more than a few pages to his exploits. References to him in other sources are slight and fall short of explaining a satisfactory explanation of his deeds. The remarkable story of Ülkümen is an important but little-known aspect of Turkish history in the Second World War period. He is an individual who has not received the attention he deserves. This book serves to fill this historiographical void. It draws on the previously unused files of the Turkish Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the Yad Vashem Archives, and available primary and secondary sources in Turkish, English, and French.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Women’s Health in Britain and America: Texts and Contexts offers an unparalleled record of women’s health in the United Kingdom and the United States since 1750. Through chapters on pregnancy and childbirth, contraception and abortion, and breast and gynecological cancers, today’s readers can better understand historical precedents for contemporary issues. Introductory overviews present context about the history of medical care for women, such as diagnosis and treatment of specific conditions, medical advances, social and political contexts, and the effects of these on their lived experiences. The book presents a collection of primary texts including archival memoirs, letters, and diaries as well as published fiction, poetry, and medical advice. Women’s Health in Britain and America provides the necessary background for those new to the subject while also offering unique texts that will engage those already immersed in the field. As the political and social discussions around women’s bodies become more contentious and consequential, the history and the multiplicity of voices presented on these pages are more important than ever.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this new century, born in hope but soon thereafter cloaked in terror, many see religion and politics as a volatile, if not deadly, mixture. For All Peoples and All Nations uncovers a remarkable time when that was not so; when together, those two entities gave rise to a new ideal: universal human rights. John Nurser has given life to a history almost sadly forgotten, and introduces the reader to the brilliant and heroic people of many faiths who, out of the aftermath of World War II and in the face of cynicism, dismissive animosity, and even ridicule, forged one of the world's most important secular documents, the United Nations's Universal Declaration of Human Rights. These courageous, persistent, visionary individuals--notable among them an American Lutheran Seminary professor from Philadelphia, O. Frederick Nolde--created the Commission on Human Rights. Eventually headed by one of the world's greatest humanitarians, Eleanor Roosevelt, the Universal Declaration has become the touchstone for political legitimacy. As David Little says in the foreword to this remarkable chronicle, "Both because of the large gap it fills in the story of the founding of the United Nations and the events surrounding the adoption of human rights, and because of the wider message it conveys about religion and peacebuilding, For All Peoples and All Nations is an immensely important contribution. We are all mightily in John Nurser's debt." If religion and politics could once find common ground in the interest of our shared humanity, there is hope that it may yet be found again.
