Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Here, There & Away is a unique collection of entertaining stories from the families who support our service men and women. Spanning the three branches of the Australian Defence Force this is a literary first. The stories cover the period from World War I to more recent times, and celebrate the love, care and support given by and to members of the wider defence family as well as the resilience required in diverse locations and situations. Some stories will tug at the heart strings while others are funny in the extreme. Many touch on significant historical events. There are a number of stories that will surprise and enlighten – all within a gentler context than the normal genre of military history. The reader will be left pondering and maybe even enticed to further explore some aspects of Australian military history. The stories in Here, There & Away poignantly depict the ups and downs of everyday life for military families in times of war and peace, but they also reflect many aspects of life experienced by the wider community. This collection is an important contribution to Australian social and military history, and an entertaining and uplifting book for readers of all ages.

Book excerpt: Women and Gender Perspectives in the Military compares the integration of women, gender perspectives, and the women, peace, and security agenda into the armed forces of eight countries plus NATO and United Nations peacekeeping operations. This book brings a much-needed crossnational analysis of how militaries have or have not improved gender balance, what has worked and what has not, and who have been the agents for change. The country cases examined are Sweden, the Netherlands, Canada, the United States, the United Kingdom, Israel, Australia, and South Africa. Despite increased opportunities for women in the militaries of many countries and wider recognition of the value of including gender perspectives to enhance operational effectiveness, progress has encountered roadblocks even nearly twenty years after United Nations Security Council Resolution 1325 kicked off the women, peace, and security agenda. Robert Egnell, Mayesha Alam, and the contributors to this volume conclude that there is no single model for change that can be applied to every country, but the comparative findings reveal many policy-relevant lessons while advancing scholarship about women and gendered perspectives in the military.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This addition to the Women and Society around the World series explores the roles, challenges, and accomplishments of women in the military in countries across the globe. Around the world, millions of men serve in their countries' militaries, be it on land, on the seas, or in the air. But while many militaries have opened all positions to women, even those on the front lines, others remain closed. Countries have cited a number of reasons for their policies, including changing views of women and the military, conscription, and economic and demographic trends. Written by a professor of comparative politics at the United States Military Academy at West Point and an active duty army major, this book seeks to provide an understanding of women's roles in militaries around the world. The book is organized by region, exploring societal and cultural views of masculinity and war, as well as factors influencing changing views of women and the military, including conscription and economic and demographic trends. Topics also include sexual harassment, recruitment, and views on women's physicality and strength. High school students, undergraduates, and general readers will find this cross-cultural study a fascinating and important resource.

Book excerpt: The Australian Defence Force (ADF) has come a long way in its understanding of gender issues. We recognise that our future defence capability will depend on drawing our human resources from all sectors of society. Women constitute over 50 per cent of Australia's population. We need to tap more effectively into this talent pool. Initiatives over the past two decades have seen an increasingly successful integration of women into the three services. More recently, there has been a concerted effort to integrate gender considerations into policy, training, planning and operations. The Women, Peace and Security (WPS) agenda has been a critical guide in this learning process. I, and the ADF executive leadership, strongly support the Defence Implementation Plan (DIP), part of the Australian National Action Plan on Women, Peace and Security 2012-2018. We are committed to doing everything possible to fully integrate women and gender considerations into the ADF. New policies and programs and senior leadership efforts are not enough to bring about the deep cultural change that is needed. It is not just about employing more women. All members of the ADF and those we work with from across government and the non-government and private sectors need to understand WPS principles. We need to normalise WPS and gender considerations in everyday decision making. The publication demonstrates through practical example how WPS can be incorporated into military or organisational planning to improve operational outcomes and achieve mission objectives. It shows how good leadership is predicated on creative, responsive and inclusive thinking, and an ability to absorb new ways of seeing the world. This publication is a useful tool for those who need to understand the importance of changing how we do things within the ADF. WPS may be only one element of an evolving global landscape, but it is a most important one. By embracing WPS, including a gender perspective, we will not only ensure continued capability development within the ADF, but also that the ADF helps more effectively the communities and peoples we are trained to protect.

Book excerpt: Australian deployed women are excelling in a multitude of ways and the importance of their contribution to peace and security operations should not be underestimated. This report by The University of Queensland examines deployment experiences from the perspective of women, and cross references them with the accounts of men. This research involved the participation of 352 Australian female and male personnel with deployment experience from within the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade, Australian Defence Force and Australian FederalPolice across a 25 year period and within diverse peace and security contexts. The report details Australian deployed women's contribution to the Women Peace and Security (WPS) agenda, in addition to achievements and strengths in other aspects critical to operational success.
