Book excerpt: This book can be considered as a significant documentation effort on this sensitive and important topic. The experiences of Policy Level Interventions for Women and Human Settlements and he nature of impact made on he women related initiatives and the nature support needed in future housing policies have been covered in this book. It brings out succinctly the role of women as reproducers and producers and as community managers contributing to the shelter development process and the specific problems of women headed house-holds in Asian, African and Latin American countries Mrs Sehgal powerfully argues the distinction to be made between practical and strategic gender need to correct the assumption that meeting women's practical needs automatically further women's strategic needs. Built on the initial conceptual frame work, the book brings out series of case studies in subsequent chapters from Asia, Africa and Central and South America, India, Sri Lanka, Peru. Each of the case studies bring vast potential and prospects for application in various project cycles with experiences of women in self-help housing programmes with grassroot level initiatives as well as involvement in construction, housing and human settlements.

Book excerpt: "This paper concerns itself with the urban poor living in self-built slum and squatter settlements. It suggests that establishing communication with this majority is an effective way of helping them to solve their problems. It also suggests that doing so with a view to the needs and contributions of women is a prerequisite for sustained and participatory solutions."--P. 1.

Book excerpt: Seminar paper from the year 2005 in the subject Politics - Topic: Development Politics, grade: 2,0, Copenhagen Business School, course: Methodology of development cooperation, language: English, abstract: Rapid urbanisation in the developing world is the focus of urban development programmes that aim to upgrade physical infrastructure facilities and social community programmes. The participatory urban development programme by the GTZ 1 in El Nasseriya in Aswan/Egypt shows insights on a very heterogeneous community that has been shaped by rural-urban migration. This programme serves as a base to debate limitations and opportunities of participation and gender sensitive approaches within the development discourse by referring to the following scenarios: Firstly, the GTZ failed to implement the participatory component in the planning phase and furthermore, failed to take into consideration the role, needs and resources of women. However, women eventually showed their presence in public and participated independently from the applied policies. Later on, conflicts and power struggles occurred when gender components were finally implemented and institutionalised by the GTZ. It is crucial to study the interrelations between the applied policies and the involvement of a community and to take into account that urban development programmes are not blind to gender, as this will lead to a re-evaluation and re-appreciation of the women within society. Book excerpt: Seeking to catalyze innovative thinking and practice within the field of women and gender in development, editors Jane S. Jaquette and Gale Summerfield have brought together scholars, policymakers, and development workers to reflect on where the field is today and where it is headed. The contributors draw from their experiences and research in Latin America, Asia, and Africa to illuminate the connections between women’s well-being and globalization, environmental conservation, land rights, access to information technology, employment, and poverty alleviation. Highlighting key institutional issues, contributors analyze the two approaches that dominate the field: women in development (WID) and gender and development (GAD). They assess the results of gender mainstreaming, the difficulties that development agencies have translating gender rhetoric into equity in practice, and the conflicts between gender and the reassertion of indigenous cultural identities. Focusing on resource allocation, contributors explore the gendered effects of land privatization, the need to challenge cultural traditions that impede women’s ability to assert their legal rights, and women’s access to bureaucratic levers of power. Several essays consider women’s mobilizations, including a project to provide Internet access and communications strategies to African NGOs run by women. In the final essay, Irene Tinker, one of the field’s founders, reflects on the interactions between policy innovation and women’s organizing over the three decades since women became a focus of development work. Together the contributors bridge theory and practice to point toward productive new strategies for women and gender in development. Contributors.
