Book excerpt: The number of people on the earth, their distributions across the globe, consumption pattern and technologies they use, determine their relevance on the environment. That is, man uses the environment as a resource bank, a habitat and as a sink for wastes. But to correct the ills of the environment, we need to know and understand the environment. To understand the environment, we need to study it. To study the environment with the required precision, we need effective techniques. However, in the world of finite and non-renewable resources, the need to maintain our environment in a sustainable way cannot be overemphasized. This is even more crucial in settings where poverty, population pressure, vagaries of weather, etc. have meant increasing demand on the environment. In particular, societies, such as Nigeria, women are the traditional custodians of the environment their roles are hardly documented nor appreciated. Consequently, most measures that are designed to ameliorate, mitigate and reverse the deleterious impact of man on his environment tend to by-pass women. The very low level of successes of 'man-centered intervention projects' does not match the resources expended. To succeed, they need to appreciate the important role of gender relations, in particular women, in the maintenance and sustenance of the milieu as the home of man will loom large. This critically demands a radical departure from the current status quo to a system that places women at the nexus of environmentally friendly measures. In this paper; a framework for the documentation and appreciation of the contribution of women to a myriad of environmental problems is put forward. This framework appreciates the 'place' to wit, the socio-cultural and physical milieu that women have to grapple with in foresting healthy environmental management in Nigeria. There is, therefore, need for environmental security for future generations especially as the global environmental change affects the capacity to achieve sustainable development.

Book excerpt: Recent studies have shown that one in four women worldwide or about 620 million women rate their lives positively enough to be considered 'thriving' and have shown that women in Nigeria play a crucial role due to their active involvement in conservation activities and management of the environment. However, they are viewed as insignificant partners and not accorded due attention and many women-related economic and social activities depends on environmental resources. Yet, women are denied access to effective and sustainable use of forest resources, and they have limited or no control over land, capital and labour. Women therefore suffer numerous limitations accordingly. As a result of widespread mistreatment and overt discrimination in all dimensions of women lives, women lack significant autonomy. The central preoccupation of this review is to explore key role of women in environmental conservation and discuss the current challenges and opportunities for the future. Equipped with the right tools, the massive and growing generation of women in Africa, particularly, Nigeria has the potential to drive development, achieve global goals and transform the continent's future along with their own." It is therefore recommended that for sustainable development to take its roots, access and ownership of natural resources should be enhanced for all gender particularly women, people living with disabilities, marginalized and minority groups. Unless women efforts are recognised, we might likely be pushing towards planetary limits and without vibrant women movement, the Sustainable Development Goals are dead in the water thereby leading to the brink of a global disaster.

Book excerpt: Gender equality and environmental goals are mutually reinforcing, with slow progress on environmental actions affecting the achievement of gender equality, and vice versa. Progress towards the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) requires targeted and coherent actions. However, complementarities and trade-offs between gender equality and environmental sustainability are scarcely documented within the SDG framework. Based on the SDG framework, this report provides an overview of the gender-environment nexus, looking into data and evidence gaps, economic and well-being benefits, and governance and justice aspects. It examines nine environment-related SDGs (2, 6, 7, 9, 11, 12 and 15) through a gender-environment lens, using available data, case studies, surveys and other evidence. It shows that women around the world are disproportionately affected by climate change, deforestation, land degradation, desertification, growing water scarcity and inadequate sanitation, with gender inequalities further exacerbated by COVID-19. The report concludes that gender-responsiveness in areas such as land, water, energy and transport management, amongst others, would allow for more sustainable and inclusive economic development, and increased well-being for all. Recognising the multiple dimensions of and interactions between gender equality and the environment, it proposes an integrated policy framework, taking into account both inclusive growth and environmental considerations at local, national and international levels.

Book excerpt: The world is in a race against time to achieve the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (UN SDGs) by 2030. Despite global efforts to address these ambitious goals, progress remains uneven, and significant gaps persist. Women are often underrepresented and underutilized in leadership positions, yet they possess untapped potential to be formidable forces of change. The Role of Female Leaders in Achieving the Sustainable Development Goals is an exploration into the role of female leaders in overcoming the challenges that hinder the realization of the UN SDGs. It makes clear that the reality of achieving these goals requires a seismic shift in leadership dynamics, with women at the forefront of this transformative journey. The Role of Female Leaders in Achieving the Sustainable Development Goals introduces readers to a diverse array of women leaders who have been instrumental in driving progress towards the UN SDGs. Their stories serve as sources of inspiration for academics, corporate executives, non-governmental organization (NGO) leaders, and government officials, showcasing the tangible impact women can have when given the opportunity to lead. The book is a call to action, urging women to step into leadership roles across academia, corporations, civil society, and government, thereby expediting the achievement of the United Nations development goals.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Scientific Essay from the year 2012 in the subject Women Studies / Gender Studies, University of Jaume I, language: English, abstract: This study is a contribution to the debate on the political and socio-economical empowerment of African women in the era of democratic awakening. The thrust of this study examined and analysed impediments to the political and socio-economical empowerment of the African woman in the 21st century, with emphasis on Nigeria, and how to emancipate female Nigerians from political mediocre and stagnancy through education and participation in the socio-economic and political development of the nation. It argued that whereas various factors impede the advancement of women in politics and other spheres of the society, these factors are partly contributed by female Nigerians. The study further revealed that whereas the government has a role to play in changing the subordinate status of women in government and decision-making, many actions have to be taken by women in order to break loose from political backwardness and social subordination. Issues such as contending factors to the political progress of women were examined, and thereafter the way forward proposed. The main purpose of the study is to encourage maximum support and participation of women in decision-making and the development of the nation. This article may be useful to educators, policy makers and women groups who are developing strategies for the advancement of women in developing countries.

Book excerpt: This book explores Nigeria’s progress towards achieving the Sustainable Development Goals, presenting key country-specific lessons, as well as providing innovative solutions and practices which are transferrable to other emerging economies. Despite all of Nigeria’s potential, and substantial oil revenues, poverty remains widespread and the country faces many challenges. The contributors to this book provide comparative historical and contemporary analysis of the main challenges for achieving progress in the SDGs, and make recommendations for the most effectives ways of developing, adopting, disseminating and scaling them. Starting with the conceptualisation and evolution of the SDGs, the book goes on to consider the goal on ending poverty, and the urgent need to combat climate change and its impacts. The book also reflects on the role of business and taxation, and the cultural and societal dimensions of the SDGs, including education, gender, and the role of the church. Overall, the book focuses on knowledge/implementation gaps and the role of collaborative partnerships and disruptive technologies in implementing the framework in general. This book will be of interest to scholars, policy makers and practitioners of sustainable development and African studies, as well as those with a particular interest in Nigeria.

This book was released on 2021 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "[T]o devise development planning without the participation of [rural] women is like using four fingers when you have ten." Both lack of access to energy and climate change threatens poverty reduction and sustainable development in Nigeria. Most poor communities in Africa use inadequate fuels and are highly vulnerable to the impacts of climate change, with women bearing most of the social, economic, and environmental costs. Promoting access to affordable and sustainable energy through policy interventions is one crucial path to achieving sustainable development. Renewable energy offers countries the opportunity to meet the energy demands of the poorest and most vulnerable in each society, and thereby achieve many of the sustainable development goals, such as: hunger and poverty eradication, gender equity, affordable and clean energy, climate action, and maternal health. The Nigerian government is constantly formulating legal frameworks for renewable energy to expand the availability of energy (including electricity) to rural areas while reducing the impacts of climate change. Yet the extent to which these legal frameworks will be implemented successfully remain in doubt; as to date, Nigeria has been unable to achieve its stated goal of sustainable development. Why are renewable energy policies and laws in Nigeria not succeeding? This thesis asks whether one reason may be that Nigerian women living in rural areas have little role in both designing renewable energy laws and policies and participating in their effective implementation. This is a problem given that rural women are the primary users of unsustainable energy, they suffer most from its negative impacts, they are the main beneficiaries of rural electrification, and the closest to the needs and capacities of the population in rural communities. This thesis is mainly qualitative. Multiple approaches (feminist historical research, documentary or doctrinal analysis as well as analysis by specific illustrative examples) were used to explore the phenomenon of why the Nigerian government's concerted efforts at developing the legal frameworks for renewable energy have not yielded their desired goals of promoting sustainable development, and what lessons could be learned from South Africa. In addition to contributing to the gender and renewable energy literature, the research attempts to develop a blueprint for inclusive approaches to renewable energy law. It investigates how renewable energy legal and institutional frameworks could effectively include rural women. Using ideas from feminist legal theorists, the thesis makes a case for why rural women should be considered suitable stakeholder participants. It concludes that renewable energy policy- and law-making processes which consider the voices and active participation of rural women could encourage an increase in the generation, distribution, and use of renewable energy in the poorest inaccessible areas while closing the gap between renewable energy policies and laws, and sustainable development. Finally, it recommends that renewable energy policies and laws should increase rural women's participation by using among other things "recognition politics," which allows for the representation of subordinate social groups in bodies such as Parliaments; for example, by using measures such as mandatory affirmative action - quota system clauses, and techniques such as"Taking Parliament to the People."

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book explores the impacts of climate change on Nigeria. How climate change impacts the productivity and future development of different sectors in Nigeria was covered in this book. Various themes of the Nigerian economy, environment, and climate change were considered. Worthy of note are the impacts of climate change on the Nigerian air quality, surface and groundwater resources, watershed and natural resources’ development and planning, soil- quality, fertility, salinization, nutrients and cropping patterns. Also, the impact of climate change on land use/land cover, urbanization and strategic planning, crops and sustainable crop yield; land degradation, soil erosion, landslides and landscapes, rainfall trend patterns, drought vulnerability; ecology, vegetation/forest, carbon and biomass management of Nigeria were investigated. Finally, the problems of climate change in semi-arid and arid regions (with special emphasis on Nigeria) and possible solutions for sustainable development under the changing climate were discussed in this book. Advanced technologies, such as remote sensing, GIS, multivariate analytical tools, and machine learning techniques, were utilized in the exploration and analysis of the themes of this book. Thus, this book is a very important product for point of view researchers, scientists, NGOs, and university communities on the Nigerian climate change. This book is a useful interdisciplinary tool, cutting across various disciplines such as earth sciences, hydrology, environmental sciences, soil science, engineering, remote sensing, natural resources management, and public health management, etc.
