Book excerpt: This is the new revised and extended edition of Womb Medicine. Womb Medicine is a timely manifesto and clarion call for every woman to look inwards and listen to the wisdom of her own body. It is a book about an ancient form of medicine that has been used by women around the world for centuries to maintain reproductive health. It is also a manifesto to educate, encourage and inspire women to look within and take the steps they need to reclaim their health and wellness on all levels. Yoni means 'sacred temple' in Sanskrit. This gentle healing modality combines the medicinal properties of herbs with the purifying effects of steam to cleanse and detox the yoni. Until recently it was almost unheard of in the Western world. Since 2012 and the resurgence of the Divine Feminine, more and more women have sought and found a greater connection with their Feminine Self and have reclaimed this ritual as a radical practice for womb health and wellbeing. Sitting over a steaming pot of herbs is a gentle way to soothe painful periods, tone and restore vaginal tissues after childbirth, and to address anger and unresolved trauma. It costs next to nothing, especially if you grow your own herbs. Learn how this practice works on both physical and emotional levels and how you can make it part of your self-care medicine kit. Yoni steaming is a ritual that will help guide you back to your sacred womb space. By taking the time to honour your womb you will: * Restore health and balance to your reproductive system. * Discover the inherent magic and creativity of your menstrual cycle. * Enhance the connection to your innate sexual identity. * Give yourself permission to love and forgive yourself.

This book looks at the impact of these often arbitrary laws which can result in the punishment, incarceration, and humiliation of women, particularly poor women and women of color. Frequently based on unscientific claims of endangering a fetus, these laws allow extraordinary powers to state authorities over reproductive freedom and pregnancies. In this book, Michele Goodwin discusses real examples of women whose pregnancies have been controlled by the law and what has led to the United States being the deadliest country in the developed world for a woman to be pregnant.

Book excerpt: It's obvious why only men develop prostate cancer and why only women get ovarian cancer. But it is not obvious why women are more likely to recover language ability after a stroke than men or why women are more apt to develop autoimmune diseases such as lupus. Sex differences in health throughout the lifespan have been documented. Exploring the Biological Contributions to Human Health begins to snap the pieces of the puzzle into place so that this knowledge can be used to improve health for both sexes. From behavior and cognition to metabolism and response to chemicals and infectious organisms, this book explores the health impact of sex (being male or female, according to reproductive organs and chromosomes) and gender (one's sense of self as male or female in society). Exploring the Biological Contributions to Human Health discusses basic biochemical differences in the cells of males and females and health variability between the sexes from conception throughout life. The book identifies key research needs and opportunities and addresses barriers to research. Exploring the Biological Contributions to Human Health will be important to health policy makers, basic, applied, and clinical researchers, educators, providers, and journalists-while being very accessible to interested lay readers.

Book excerpt: Are you considering a hysterectomy? Do you want to understand the medical and emotional aspects of this procedure? Look no further than "Womb Weavings: Intertwining Medicine and Emotion." This short read book provides a comprehensive guide to hysterectomy, covering everything from its history to the future of this procedure. In the introduction, you will gain a clear understanding of what a hysterectomy is and why it matters. You will explore the different types of hysterectomy, including total hysterectomy, partial hysterectomy, laparoscopic hysterectomy, and robotic hysterectomy. Each type is explained in detail, allowing you to make an informed decision about which one is right for you. The book delves into the reasons for hysterectomy, such as uterine fibroids, endometriosis, pelvic inflammatory disease, abnormal uterine bleeding, and cancer. You will learn about the medical evaluation and pre-operative testing required before the procedure, as well as the importance of emotional preparation. The hysterectomy procedure itself is thoroughly explained, including anesthesia options, surgical techniques, and potential risks and complications. You will also discover what to expect during the recovery period, from managing pain and discomfort to post-operative care and returning to daily activities. One important aspect of hysterectomy is hormone replacement therapy (HRT). "Womb Weavings" provides a comprehensive overview of HRT, including its benefits, risks, and different types available. Additionally, alternative treatments to hysterectomy, such as medications, uterine artery embolization, endometrial ablation, and myomectomy, are explored. The emotional effects of hysterectomy are not overlooked in this book. You will find guidance on coping with the emotional impact, as well as information on support groups and maintaining intimacy and sexuality after the procedure. Long-term health after hysterectomy is also addressed, including bone health, cardiovascular health, sexual health, and psychological health. The impact of hysterectomy on fertility is discussed, along with fertility preservation options, surrogacy, and adoption. Cost and insurance coverage of hysterectomy are important considerations, and this book provides valuable information on these topics. Legal issues surrounding hysterectomy, such as informed consent, medical malpractice, and discrimination, are also explored. The book concludes with a look at the future of hysterectomy, including advancements in surgical techniques, emerging alternatives, and the role of hysterectomy in women's healthcare. Book excerpt: Lazare Riviere (called Lazarus Riverius in Latin), born in 1589, practiced medicine in Montpellier, France, and eventually became physician to the French king. He wrote 17 books, each covering the diseases of a separate part of the body, and his collected works were published in Latin in 1655 in a single volume, The Practice of Physick. There were many subsequent editions, including several editions of the English translation by the famous London herbalist Nicholas Culpeper. Riviere's Book 15, Of the Diseases of Women, gives a good insight into the way 17th century medicine was practised, with its great emphasis on the regulation of the 'humours' by the use of herbal and other natural remedies. It also provides a marvellous view of the miseries which most medieval women, rich and poor, would have had to suffer during the ordeals of pregnancy and childbirth at that time. This is one of the first textbooks of obstetrics and gynaecology ever to be translated from Latin into English. Enough of the original text is retained to convey the flavour of the work, repetition and verbosity has been ruthlessly removed and the technical jargon has been translated into simple modern terms. The text is thus accessible to both the medical and the general reader.

Book excerpt: Rediscover the lost ancient mystery teachings of the Cosmic Womb • 2017 Nautilus Silver Award • Explains how each of us has a holographic blueprint of the Womb of Creation, our spiritual Womb • Offers practices to help awaken your spiritual Womb, experience the Womb of God within, and activate the Womb’s sacred magic of creation and manifestation • Looks at the power of the moon and its connection to sacred Womb Consciousness • Explores how the lost Womb mystery teachings were encoded in folk and fairy tales, the legends of the Holy Grail, and the traditions of Mary Magdalene and Sophia • Includes access to three guided Womb Awakening audio journeys The Ancients lived by a feminine cosmology of creation, where everything was birthed and dissolved through a sacred universal Womb. Within each of us, whether female or male, lies a holographic blueprint of this Womb of Creation, connecting us to the Web of Life. By awakening your spiritual Womb, the holy of holies within the temple of your body, you can reconnect to the transformative energy of Womb Consciousness and reclaim your sacred powers of creation and love. Drawing on mythical and spiritual traditions from almost every culture, Dr. Azra and Seren Bertrand reconstruct the moon-based feminine mystery teachings of a lost global Womb religion, tracing the tradition all the way back to the Neanderthals and beyond. They explore how these teachings were encoded in the symbolism of folk and fairy tales; the legends of the Holy Grail; the traditions of Mary Magdalene and Sophia; the maiden, queen, and crone archetypes; and the teachings of alchemy and the chakras. They show how sages and shamans across the globe all secretly spoke of the Cosmic Womb and the sacred creative powers of Moon Blood. The authors look at the power of the Moon and its connection to sacred Womb Consciousness, offering meditations and practices to help awaken your spiritual Womb and activate its sacred magic of creation and manifestation. They explain how to activate the energetic gateways of the Womb and merge the heart and Womb to make sexual union the highest sacrament of love. Revealing how we must reconnect with the Divine Feminine to rebirth the Divine Masculine and restore balance to our world, they show how, as we reawaken the powerful ancient path of the Womb Mysteries, we help return our world to harmony with the wild, untamed creative flows and cyclical rhythms of the cosmos.

Book excerpt: This book offers a vision of politics that govern the womb; from antiquity (‘be fertile and replenish the earth’), through the ages (hysterectomy, to extirpate women’s ‘hysteria’), up to the present time (abortion wars; assisted reproduction), and into the future (reprogenetics; the artificial womb). It explores how the womb has served humanity, either tacitly or explicitly, through the ages and examines how women have accepted and still perceive the rules created by men as natural - including the new anti-abortion laws in the USA - because ‘that is the way things are.’ The book also explores how the emerging of assisted reproduction technologies and novel genetic tools (reprogenetics) will pose additional challenges to womb bearers, as all women will be made to reproduce with IVF. What is more, the advent of the artificial womb is in sight; the gender and social implications of this development would be enormous. Certainly not just another organ, the womb has been and remains a powerful tool that cannot be left to the decisions of half of the population. This book engages a wide audience, including women and men, professionals and laypersons who are interested in gender, politics, legislation, women’s health, and ethics.
