Book excerpt: Excerpt from Daughters of America: Or, Women of the Century America has been richly blessed in its women, as well as its men, of patriotism, intelligence, usefulness, and moral worth. Indeed, it has been a marvel to many in the Old World, that the women of the New have been in many instances so thoroughly cultured, so admirably developed morally and intellectually, amid so much that was new and therefore crude in society, and in a freedom which the women of European nations have never enjoyed, and of which those of Asiatic peoples never dreamed. A cultured Christian women of English birth and education, but now in a lovely Scottish home, wrote to the writer of this volume, that, when visiting America, that which she most enjoyed "was the sense of freedom," - a freedom which has been the high privilege of the women of our first century, and will be yet more the glorious heritage of the women of the second, as the ripened fruit is garnered from the promise-blossom. "It seemed to me," wrote the lady above mentioned, "that by that freedom I was lifted up to a larger and diviner life, and a tender and reverent expectation of glorious possibilities for our race, and especially for women." Book excerpt: Excerpt from Women in American History Value of Woman's Work. - From the founding of the first English settlements in the New World the women of America have bravely and nobly done their part in making our country a great nation. It is true that the pages of history are filled with stories of the deeds of men, while not many names of women are recorded. The reason for this is that woman's work for the most part has been done quietly and inconspicuously. The home has been her Kingdom, and until recent years there was no place for her in public life. To men were left the making of wars, the administration of government, and the leadership of movements affecting communities and states. But even before she entered public life woman's part in the making of our history was just as important as that of men. Women as Home Makers. - You remember how in the Virginia colony the womanless settlement at Jamestown was rapidly drifting to ruin through homesickness, discontent and idleness. Then a shipload of English maidens arrived at the Virginia shores. The young women became the wives of the settlers and established real homes in the wilderness. The reason for this is two fold: first, the fact that, to an unprecedented degree, women are engaging in gainful occupa tions; and second, the effect of their labor upon marriage and upon the home. Thus it is apparent that the labor of women evokes an interest quite apart from its physical aecom plishment. It is the social effect of such labor that awakens thought, and ultimately resolves itself into action. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The History of the Woman's Club Movement in America The priceless boon that America gave to women was freedom and Opportunity. Up to the last half, it might be said quarter, of the present century, small provision had been made for the education and training of the woman beyond the rudimentary lines. As late as the early seventies no college training was possible to a girl in New York city and many other parts of this country, except under precisely the same conditions as those which existed in Russia; viz., by the special grace of some professor endowed with the human spirit, such as Professor Newberry of Columbia in New York or Dr. Gruber of St. Petersburg. The club, from the beginning, accomplished two purposes. It provided a means for the acquisition of knowledge, the training of power; and the work ing of a spirit of human solidarity, a comprehension of the continuity of life its universal character and interdependence. It is not too much to say that this aspect changed the Whole point of View of the woman who came under its influence. Her ideals were elevated, her trust in eternal goodness and its purpose strengthened, and her own possibilities as a social and intellectual force, brought out and gradually moulded into form. The acceptance of the club as a means of education and development was almost simultaneous throughout the country. Everywhere groups of women were found who eagerly seized the idea and shaped it according to' their own conditions and needs. Everywhere also the path has broadened, and larger groups of women have and are working with the same eager enthusiasm toward the still larger life, the greater unity, the all in all. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The History of the American Association of University Women, 1881-1931 It may be that unsympathetic readers of this volume will feel that the organization and individual members are too highly praised. One has only to turn to the written records of the Association records both national and local to feel assured that the criticism is unjust. The universal testimony seems to be that college and university women get their in spiration at the beginning of an undertaking or at moments of discouragement either from their Alma Mater or from other college and university women with whom, in branches of the Association, they work shoulder to shoulder. It is hard to estimate inspiration and perseverance, and to weigh actual achievement in the scales, but the three hundred branch his tories and the twelve state division histories, together with records of national and local committees, can be cited for all facts this volume contains.
