Book excerpt: The first English-language biography of the man behind the scenes who made the German Shakespeare possible and brought Molière's plays to life for the German stage. Baudissin's life sets a mirror to his age: born with the French Revolution, spanning from feudal nobility to the age of industry, from Napoleon's Empire to the Germany of Bismarck, in youth revering Goethe, upholding the German Romantics yet at ease with Realists and championed in old age by Freytag; devoted to Bach and the piano, friend of the Schumanns, Chopin, Mendelssohn, his family bridging to Brahms. From diplomat to dedicated translator, committed to his family, to Holstein, and to Dresden high culture, his is a legacy of sheer human goodness.
Book Synopsis Schumann and His World by : R. Larry Todd
Download or read book Schumann and His World written by R. Larry Todd and published by Princeton University Press. This book was released on 2014-07-14 with total page 408 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: We know Robert Schumann in many ways: as a visionary composer, a seasoned journalist, a cultured man of letters, and a genius who, having passed his mantle on to the young Brahms, succumbed to mental illness in 1856. Drawing on recent pathbreaking research, this collection offers new perspectives on this seminal nineteenth-century figure. In Part I, Leon Botstein and Michael P. Steinberg assess Schumann's efforts to place music at the center of German culture, in public and private sectors. Bernhard R. Appel offers a probing source study of one of Schumann's most personal works, the Album für die Jugend, Op. 68, while John Daverio considers the generic identity of Das Paradies und die Peri, and Jon W. Finson reexamines the first version of the Eichendorff Liederkreis. Gerd Nauhaus investigates Schumann's approach to the symphonic finale, and R. Larry Todd considers the intractable issue of quotations and allusions in Schumann's music. Part II presents letters and memoirs, including unpublished correspondence between Clara Schumann and Felix and Paul Mendelssohn-Bartholdy. In Part III, conflicting critical views of Schumann are juxtaposed. Some of these sources are translated into English for the first time. Originally published in 1994. The Princeton Legacy Library uses the latest print-on-demand technology to again make available previously out-of-print books from the distinguished backlist of Princeton University Press. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Fereshte Teyfouri's writings focussing on Sufi thought and mystical concepts are presented with the original Persian texts and an English translation to introduce her poignant view of existence to a wider audience. The poetic miniatures muse on existentialist concepts, stemming from the perspective of her life in Iran and later Germany - and a visceral sense of not belonging - but with the dilemmas of alienation and displacement counterbalanced by the sentiments being expressed using Sufi terms, but sometimes from the standpoint of inanimate objects: tar, blotting paper, the cleansing nature of an eraser. Fereshte Teyfouri, lecturer in Persian at the Westfalische Wilhelms-Universitat, Munster, Persian author and editor, translator for the German courts. Natalie H. Shokoohy (translator) architectural historian.
