Download or read book Family Bonds written by Ted Maris-Wolf and published by UNC Press Books. This book was released on 2015-04-20 with total page 337 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Between 1854 and 1864, more than a hundred free African Americans in Virginia proposed to enslave themselves and, in some cases, their children. Ted Maris-Wolf explains this phenomenon as a response to state legislation that forced free African Americans to make a terrible choice: leave enslaved loved ones behind for freedom elsewhere or seek a way to remain in their communities, even by renouncing legal freedom. Maris-Wolf paints an intimate portrait of these people whose lives, liberty, and use of Virginia law offer new understandings of race and place in the upper South. Maris-Wolf shows how free African Americans quietly challenged prevailing notions of racial restriction and exclusion, weaving themselves into the social and economic fabric of their neighborhoods and claiming, through unconventional or counterintuitive means, certain basic rights of residency and family. Employing records from nearly every Virginia county, he pieces together the remarkable lives of Watkins Love, Jane Payne, and other African Americans who made themselves essential parts of their communities and, in some cases, gave up their legal freedom in order to maintain family and community ties.

Book excerpt: Throughout the continents of Eurasia and North American primitive man evolved in association with wolves. Wolves competed with him as a hunter, and raided his flocks and herds. Inevitably, folklore became rich in tales of this powerful, resourceful creature. Europeans reached North American with their attitudes already formed. The wilderness pressed in upon their tiny settlements in constant threat and all energies were devoted to destroying it and turning its inexhaustible resources to use. Over vast areas of the continent the wolf went down with the wilderness before the unprecedented effectiveness of our technological attack on the ecology of a continent. Today, however, there is a great tide of concern over the consequences of our assault on the wild lands and wild creatures on the continent, and more and more biologists are devoting their knowledge and energy to searching studies of our land and its native biota. The wolf has been the subject of detailed study by a number of ecologists on this continent who make use of all the research devices now available. Much of our knowledge is very recent, is increasing rapidly, and has resulted from the work of a mere handful of keen, resourceful, and courageous students of wolf biology. This, the first book to attempt a complete account of the biology of the wolf, draws from years of field research and upon the rich literature from two continents. --From the foreword by Ian McTaggert Cowan

Download or read book Among Wolves written by Marybeth Holleman and published by University of Alaska Press. This book was released on 2013-10-15 with total page 313 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Alaska’s wolves lost their fiercest advocate, Gordon Haber, when his research plane crashed in Denali National Park in 2009. Passionate, tenacious, and occasionally brash, Haber, a former hockey player and park ranger, devoted his life to Denali’s wolves. He weathered brutal temperatures in the wild to document the wolves and provided exceptional insights into wolf behavior. Haber’s writings and photographs reveal an astonishing degree of cooperation between wolf family members as they hunt, raise pups, and play, social behaviors and traditions previously unknown. With the wolves at risk of being destroyed by hunting and trapping, his studies advocated for a balanced approach to wolf management. His fieldwork registered as one of the longest studies in wildlife science and had a lasting impact on wolf policies. Haber’s field notes, his extensive journals, and stories from friends all come together in Among Wolves to reveal much about both the wolves he studied and the researcher himself. Wolves continue to fascinate and polarize people, and Haber’s work continues to resonate.
Download or read book Wolf or Dog? written by Adam Weishaupt and published by Magus Books. This book was released on with total page 85 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: There are two types of human being - "wolves" (aggressive, assertive dominants who are determined to get what they want) and "dogs" (timid, domesticated, submissives, continually at the mercy of the wolves). Capitalism is a wolf ideology. Christianity, Islam and Judaism are dog religions - intent on forcing you onto your knees and making you obey endless commandments. The capitalist wolves can prey on the Christian dogs who simply "turn the other cheek." Democracy is another perfect vehicle for wolves. The people - the dogs - are given the illusion that they are in control, yet all democracies are just oligarchies and plutocracies. The wolves decide the political agenda and the candidates. The people merely choose which wolf will feed on them. So, are you wolf or dog? This is a book by the Pythagorean Illuminati, and its aim is to re-train the dogs to understand the wolves and stand up to them. If you want the best things in life, you cannot allow yourself to be preyed upon by the Power Elite.

Book excerpt: Exiled by his former lover, Peyton finds himself leading soldiers who resent him for his relationship to the new king—the king who has now turned his back on him. Peyton's future looks dark after Peyton and his men travel across the gate to a new world to aid in a war against invading demons. Then Peyton meets the Eight, elite warriors who keep their skills sharp by killing demons. He's immediately fascinated with Ice, one of the Eight's most talented and enigmatic warriors. Ice's lack of inhibitions or shame in loving other men turns Peyton's concepts of love on end. His feelings toward Ice soon force Peyton to confront who he truly is beneath the layers of submission he'd shown the king who abandoned Peyton to this dangerous world. He can only pray the new passion he shares with Ice will redeem him instead of shattering him forever. He cannot take having his heart broken again... Ice was not one to commit to a single lover. He had marked a path through the army with a trail of discarded lovers behind him. No one had ever left a mark upon his heart. But Peyton, the standoffish and proud new commander, proves a challenge Ice cannot resist. And one passionate dalliance was definitely not enough for Ice, who found himself drawn to Peyton again and again. They make the oddest couple: Ice, who has never taken love seriously or given his heart, and Peyton, who had given his very soul to his prince, certain their love was forever...until he was cast aside and sent to a new world to die in the war against the demons. But the demon war is racing toward its end, win or lose. In the final battle, Ice could wind up one of the many casualties no matter how desperate Peyton might be to save him...

Book excerpt: When Two Forbidden Souls Unite, Innocents are Saved. Edgar Dempsey has been a Personal Assistant to Prince Roman for over three hundred years. He is a sophisticated vampire and a respected professional. He knows what he wants in life and expects any vampire he mates to appreciate the same things as him. Fate shakes up his world. Against all reason, Edgar finds himself visiting wolf packs, driving through the mountains, wearing (shudder) jeans, all while keeping company with a sexy, dominant wolf. This is not the life he planned. Jackson Miller is a wolf shifter from the Alpha line. His father was killed under suspicious circumstances and now his brother, the pack Alpha, has vanished. Something sinister is happening in the shifter community; Alphas are going feral, wolves are dying, and now wolf pups are missing. The last thing Jackson has time for is a prissy mate who wouldn't know how to handle a strong wolf if he bit him. A sophisticated city vampire has no place in the country. Fate is laughing at them both. This book is not a standalone and is best read as part of a series. Book Synopsis The Genetics Of Altruism by : Scott Boorman
Download or read book The Genetics Of Altruism written by Scott Boorman and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2012-12-02 with total page 480 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Genetics of Altruism covers the primary findings on social evolution, social trait, and altruism from a population genetics standpoint to establish a system of genetic boxes. It presents an evolutionary question with two faces: Why are there so many social species? Why, in all the diversity of the animal kingdom, are the social species so few? To address the evolutionary question, this book focuses on recognition of the fact that on an evolutionary time, scale genetics must underlie all changes in the capacity for social structure and other aspects of organic evolution. It presents comparative analyses framed in mathematical terms; mathematical concepts as a means of getting outside human, perhaps more generally primate and carnivore; frames of reference; and alternative network combinatorics as a natural basis for comparing social structures that are phylogenetically remote. It also discusses the comparative biology of social behavior on a purely descriptive basis through the social and evolutionary structures emergent. The book concludes by discussing major evolutionary pathways, various kinds of preadaptedness for sociality, and the use of cascade principle to suggest ways in which human evolution may have been a special case. This book is a valuable resource for biologists, social scientists, researchers, students, and all those who want to broaden their knowledge in the field of social behavior and altruism.
