Book Synopsis Eastern Europe [3 volumes] by : Richard Frucht
Download or read book Eastern Europe [3 volumes] written by Richard Frucht and published by Bloomsbury Publishing USA. This book was released on 2004-12-22 with total page 951 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A contemporary analysis of the people, cultures, and society within the regions that make up Eastern Europe. Eastern Europe: An Introduction to the People, Lands, and Culture sheds light on modern-day life in the 16 nations comprising Eastern Europe. Going beyond the history and politics already well documented in other works, this unique three-volume series explores the social and cultural aspects of a region often ignored in books and curricula on Western civilization. The volumes are organized by geographic proximity and commonality in historical development, allowing the countries to be both studied individually and juxtaposed against others in the region. The first volume covers the northern tier of states, the second looks at lands that were once part of the Hapsburg empire, and the third examines the Balkan states. Each chapter profiles a single country—its geography, history, political development, economy, and culture—and gives readers a glimpse of the challenges that lie ahead. Vignettes on various topics of interest illuminate the unique character of each country.
Book Synopsis Notes from the Future of Art by : Jerzy Ludwiński
Download or read book Notes from the Future of Art written by Jerzy Ludwiński and published by . This book was released on 2007 with total page 250 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Notes From the Future of Art" is the first English language publication by Jerzy Ludwinski (1930-2000), the Polish art historian, critic, curator, founder of the Mona Lisa Gallery in Wroclaw, founder and mentor of the "structural art" pioneers Grupa Zamek, editor of the group's magazine "Struktury" and professor at the Polish Academy of Fine Arts. Ludwinski dissolved the compartmentalization of all these vocations in the course of his career, operating on the periphery of the state system as an informal éminence grise to Poland's avant-garde during the 50s and 60s. Ludwinski argued that "art" was no longer an appropriate designation for what was done in its name: "It is quite possible...that today we do not practice art any longer, simply because we have missed the moment when it transformed into something quite different, which we are unable to name. It is certain, however, that what we practice today presents greater possibilities."

Book Synopsis Figuration/Abstraction by : Charlotte Benton
Download or read book Figuration/Abstraction written by Charlotte Benton and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2017-07-05 with total page 356 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The notion that the practice of abstraction was confined to Western Europe while a stereotyped form of figuration defined the art of the Eastern bloc continues to dominate art historical accounts of public sculpture of the post-war period. This book offers a number of alternative readings, and demonstrates strategic uses of figuration and abstraction across East and West. Encompassing sites of memory (including war memorials and Holocaust memorials), state, civic and corporate sculpture, as well as temporary and unexecuted projects, the book shows that persuasive advocates of figuration were to be found in the West, while in the East imaginative experiments in abstraction were proposed in the name of Social Realism. Presenting fresh insights into sculptural practice in the period between 1945 and 1968, this book brings together a wide range of authors, some of whom have never before been published in English. Their essays are complemented by extracts from documentary texts, which give a flavour of contemporary debates, and a biographical section includes entries on many sculptors who will be unfamiliar to an English-speaking audience.
