Book excerpt: A LAND WITHOUT A KING In the troubled kingdom of Zamerkand, the enemies within are as dangerous as those at the borders. For Soldier, the warrior whose influence is already too great for some courtiers' liking, there is no such thing as rest. Death can strike at any moment, and from any direction. But it is another death that will shake the world to its core: that of the King Magus, whose power alone can keep the forces of good and evil in balance. His successor needs to be found, and the responsibility is given to Soldier. The successor, however, is only a young boy, and there are many who would prefer him - and Soldier - to meet a bloodier fate.

Book excerpt: A novel “filled with very credible teen angst, morality, and an intriguing blend of science fiction and fantasy” from the author of A Wizard Abroad (School Library Journal). Still recovering from an overly eventful vacation in Ireland, teenage wizard Nita Callahan is looking forward to some peace and quiet in her suburban New York home. Instead, her close friend Kit seems to be acting a little weird, and Nita keeps running into problems for which wizardry either isn’t the answer or else it’s the wrong one. How do you fix what can’t be fixed? Only the Transcendent Pig knows, and it’s not telling. But Nita needs to find out—and soon. Her wizardly partnership with Kit starts to fall apart. Much worse, her mother gets sick . . . so sick she may never leave the hospital.Only one person can help Nita—the One she’s devoted her life to fighting. “Powerful and satisfying.”—Kirkus Reviews (starred review) “A gripping and dynamic fantasy . . . Fans of the author will flock to this new adventure, which likely will bring new readers to the series.”—VOYA Praise for the Young Wizards series “Duane is tops in the high adventure business . . . An outstanding, original work.”—The Horn Book

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: How the father of wind engineering helped make the world's most amazing buildings and bridges possible With Wind Wizard, Siobhan Roberts brings us the story of Alan Davenport (1932-2009), the father of modern wind engineering, who investigated how wind navigates the obstacle course of the earth's natural and built environments—and how, when not properly heeded, wind causes buildings and bridges to teeter unduly, sway with abandon, and even collapse. In 1964, Davenport received a confidential telephone call from two engineers requesting tests on a pair of towers that promised to be the tallest in the world. His resulting wind studies on New York's World Trade Center advanced the art and science of wind engineering with one pioneering innovation after another. Establishing the first dedicated "boundary layer" wind tunnel laboratory for civil engineering structures, Davenport enabled the study of the atmospheric region from the earth's surface to three thousand feet, where the air churns with turbulent eddies, the average wind speed increasing with height. The boundary layer wind tunnel mimics these windy marbled striations in order to test models of buildings and bridges that inevitably face the wind when built. Over the years, Davenport's revolutionary lab investigated and improved the wind-worthiness of the world's greatest structures, including the Sears Tower, the John Hancock Tower, Shanghai's World Financial Center, the CN Tower, the iconic Golden Gate Bridge, the Bronx-Whitestone Bridge, the Sunshine Skyway, and the proposed crossing for the Strait of Messina, linking Sicily with mainland Italy. Chronicling Davenport's innovations by analyzing select projects, this popular-science book gives an illuminating behind-the-scenes view into the practice of wind engineering, and insight into Davenport's steadfast belief that there is neither a structure too tall nor too long, as long as it is supported by sound wind science. This book was released on 2017-09-25 with total page 96 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Content Structure for Flash Fiction has never been so simple and fast. What if all story ideas were able to be boiled down to a single formula? Wycliffe A. Hill had this idea in the 1930's when no less than Cecil B. DeMille rejected one of his stories because ""it had a good narrative, but no drama."" This led Hill to research what made a dramatic story. That study lead to a 1920's author who claimed (based on even older research) that there were only 36 possible conflicts through all dramatic works. Not too long after, Joseph Campbell produced his ""Hero With a Thousand Faces"" which prescribed the monomyth as a base for all stories. Chris Vogler then championed this idea through Hollywood. And the Star Wars saga, as well as multiple Disney hits followed that generic model. Robert Silverberg reviewed Hill's work as: ""Pick one up, follow the instructions, write your story. You might just find that a grand literary career is unfolding for you in a wondrous, magical way.""
