Book excerpt: Excerpt from Within the Precincts, Vol. 3 of 3 Lottie made her way down the Slopes alone, with feelings which had greatly changed from those of a few minutes ago. How happy she had been! The hour that had passed under the falling leaves had been like paradise; but the portals of exit from paradise are perhaps never so sweet as those of entrance. Her coming away was with a sense of humiliation and shame. As she wound her way down her favourite by-road winding among the shrubs and trees, she could not help feeling that she was making her escape, as if from some guilty meeting, some clandestine rendezvous. In all her life Lottie had never known this sensation before. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. The Abbey was as splendid as any cathedral, and possessed a dean and chapter, though no bishop. It was of Late Gothic, perpendicular and magnificent; and the walls and towers which still surrounded it, and even the old houses within the precincts, were older still than the Abbey, and could have furnished many bits' to make the heart of a mediaeval architect glad. The very turf which filled the quadrangle and clothed the slope of the Dean's Walk was a production of centuries; the Chapter House was full of historical documents, and the library of rare books and there were antiquarian fanatics who protested that the wealthy livings belonging to the Abbey, and its old endow ments, were the least of its riches. Nor was this establishment on the hill confined to eccle siastical interests only. The beautiful church was the chapel of an order of knighthood, and Opposite to it - forming an integral part of the pile of buildings - was a line of small ancient houses, forming a kind of screen and inner wall of defence to the sacred citadel, which were the lodges of a supplementary order of pensioners - Chevaliers of St. Michael - which/ at the time of the foundation had given such a balance, as the Middle Ages loved, of Christian charity and help, to the splendour and braggadocio of. Book excerpt: Excerpt from At His Gates, Vol. 3 of 3: A Novel But seated in an easy-chair by the fire was a tall man, carefully dressed, with diamond studs in his shirt, and a toilette which, though subdued in tone as a gentleman's evening dress must be, was yet too elaborate for the occasion. The fact that this new guest was a stranger to him, and that his father was seated by him in close conversation, made it at once apparent to Ned that it must be Golden. Clara was close to them listening with a look of eager interest to all they said. These three made a little detached group by one side of the fire. At the other corner sat Mrs Burton, with her little feet on a footstool, as near as pos sible to the fender. She had just said good-night to the dignified members of the party, the people who had to be considered; the others who re mained were mere young people, about whose proceedings she did not concern herself. She was taking no part in the talk at the other side of the fire. She sat and warmed her little toes and pon dered; her vivid little mind all astir and working, but uninfiuenced by; and somewhat contemptuous of, what was gomg -on around; and her chilly little person basking in the ruddy warmth of the fire. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Tales of My Neighbourhood, Vol. 3 of 3 Tornado bursts not sooner from the bosom of an eastern calm, than did the band of warriors from their delicate disguise at the sound of those beloved accents. Their swords for an instant gleamed unstained on high, but when next they rose into the air they smoked with the streaming gore of the oppressors. Struck powerless by the charge, the tyrant and his dissolute crew were disabled before they had even time to draw a sword. Thorgils was seized alive, and bound with their scarfs and bands, while the rest were hewed to pieces, without pity, on the spot. While this was done, the heroic Melcha, seizing a torch which burned in the apartment, rushed swiftly from the palace. The affrighted guards be lieving it to be some apparition, gave way as she approached, and suffered her to reach the borders of the lake, where she waved the brand on high, forgetting in the zeal of liberty her feminine character, and more resembling one of their own war-goddesses than the peaceful Christian. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries, Isfahan, the capital of the Safavid Empire, hosted Catholic missionaries of more diverse affiliations than most other cities in Asia. Attracted by the hope of converting the Shah, the missionaries acted as diplomatic agents for Catholic rulers, hosts to Protestant merchants, and healers of Armenians and Muslims. Through such niche activities they gained social acceptance locally. This book examines the activities of Discalced Carmelites and other missionaries, revealing the flexibility they demonstrated in dealing with cultural diversity, a common feature of missionary activity throughout emerging global Catholicism. While missions all over the world were central to the self-fashioning of the Counter-Reformation Church, clerics who set out to win over souls for the “true religion” turned into local actors who built reputations by defining their social roles in accordance with the expectations of their host society. Such practices fed controversies that were fought out in newly emerging public spaces. Responding to the threat this posed to its authority, the Roman Curia initiated a process of doctrinal disambiguation and centralization which culminated in the nineteenth century. Using the missions to Safavid Iran as a case study for “a global history on a small scale,” the book creates a new paradigm for the study of global Catholicism.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Three Chances, Vol. 3 of 3 Never had it occurred to her, presumptuous as she was, to question her powers of endurance, or her efficiency for the duties she was undertaking; until her acquaint ance with Manley Frere aroused her to a better know ledge of herself, and the capacities of her nature; and caused her to pant for a higher and happier destiny, than to become the companion of one with whom she held no common bond of sympathy: whose principles and prejudices were foreign to any of her own - whose society wearied her - and whom, till the last moment they spent together, she could never regard with any livelier sentiment than that of a respectful indifference. In what alone concerned Maria Palliser, there was meet retribution and most impartial judgment in the turn Of fortune which had caused her to feel and acknow ledge her error but it was hard upon Colonel Hussey to be made the victim Of her selfish mistake nor could her sternest accuser be more painfully conscious Of the wrong she had done him, than his false but repentant mistress. Excuses for breaking her engagement with him reasons persuasive and satisfactory enough - had thronged Upon her when she communed only with herself; but in finally setting her thoughts in array for the enlighten ment Of another, Maria could not but perceive how very few of these arguments were calculated to convince even the world at large - least of all the man she was pre paring to forsake. If she grounded her Obj cotions to marrying him on scruples of recent date, and professed to have only just become sensible Of the nature of her rash promise, and to have had some sudden revelation of the holiness and high mystery of this same marriage contract, which some can enter upon so thoughtlessly - but which she now perceived to require a heart more tender and atfec tions far more lively than it was in her gift to bestow then he would have reason to complain that she had suffered her convictions to lie dormant so many months, and, with a strange refinement Of caprice, had kept the chain of their compact inviolate, till the wedding-day was fixed.
