Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Are advantaged offenders defenseless against the harshness of prison life? Based upon a qualitative study of the prison adjustment of advantaged offenders—those who, prior to prison, possessed college degrees and held high status occupations with commensurately high incomes—this book challenges the special sensitivity hypothesis and concludes that these offenders adjust well to incarceration. The author compared a group of advantaged offenders to a similar group of nonadvantaged offenders, both drawn from New York State prisons, and discovered that the advantaged offenders exhibited little (if any) engagement in institutional misconduct. They also adopted effective coping strategies. DeRosia presents a thematic analysis of in-depth, focused interviews with both subsamples, as well as vignettes based upon those interviews. Her findings reveal that advantaged offenders hold a perspective on doing time, including prescriptions for avoiding trouble, and make conscious efforts to avoid trouble by using time beneficially. This study contains the most current statistics available on corrections in the U.S., including its organization, the overcrowding crisis, and prisoner profiles. The nature of life in prison and prior research on adjustment are also examined.

Book excerpt: "Thomas Mott Osborne investigated the conditions inside the prison and wrote a scathing study of its effects." -Janet Miron, 'Prisons, Asylums, and the Public: Institutional Visiting in the Nineteenth Century', University of Toronto Press, 2011 BEING A NARRATIVE OF PERSONAL EXPERIENCE DURING A WEEK OF VOLUNTARY CONFINEMENT IN THE STATE PRISON AT AUBURN, NEW YORK "Thomas Mott Osborne…decided to test the system for himself, by serving voluntarily as a prisoner for a week in the Auburn Prison. This book, consisting partly of notes written from day to day during his confinement, and partly of subsequent comments and additions, is the result. It tells vividly and without reticence all that he did, saw and heard. At times, it reaches a high pitch of dramatic expression - not through any conscious effort of the author's, but just because he describes simply what he felt and beheld. His chapter 'A Night in Hell,' describing the horrors of solitary confinement, should rouse the conscience of every reader to protest against the perpetuation of such barbarities. His report as a whole reveals not only grave defects in administering the penal system, but even more in the system itself. Mr. Osborne's book surpasses in interest the sensational novel - because it is true. One very important feature in it is the revelation it gives of his ability to get the sympathy of the prisoners, and so to understand them. Without such understanding, which involves the acknowledgement that they are human beings, subject to similar passions and amendable to similar incentives as their fellows, our prisons will continue to be haunts of legalized inhumanity, in which, as Mr. Osborne remarks, the souls and bodies of their inmates are destroyed by a deliberate regimen." -The Harvard Graduates' Magazine, Volume 23, 1914-1915 "His career as a penologist was short, but in the interval of the few years he served he succeeded in revolutionizing American prison reform, if not always in fact, then in awakening responsibility.... He was made of the spectacular stuff of martyrs, to many people perhaps ridiculous, but to those whose lives his theories most closely touched, inspiring and often godlike." -The New York Times CONTENTS I. Book excerpt: After explaining ‘What is transgender?’ this first book on transgender in a prison setting looks at the entire HM Prison Service regime for such people. Ranging from hard information about rules and regulations, the transition process and how to access it to practical suggestions about clothing, wigs and hairpieces, make-up and coming out, the book also deals with such matters as change of name, gender identity clinics, hormones, medication and use of prison showers and toilets. Covering the entire transition process the book contains contributions from a number of transgender prisoners as well as extracts from reports showing how those in transition still tend to attract a negative portrayal. Also included are the special security implications of related procedures and descriptions of the attitudes to transgender inmates of other prisoners and staff. It contains a number of appendices dealing with the latest 2016 HM Prison Service Instruction on transgender prisoners and a range of support mechanisms including a list of specialists in the field and other useful reference sources and contacts. It also contains Sarah Jane Baker’s account of her own male-to-female transition and the difficulties she has faced behind bars. The first book of its kind. Written by a transgender life-sentence prisoner. Includes key extracts from official publications. With a graphic account of the author’s own transition journey. Contains practical information and tips. Reviews ‘An important contribution to current debates on the treatment of transgender prisoners’— Mia Harris, Oxford University. ‘I was heartbroken. It felt like a bereavement. The young man I had come to love as a son had disappeared overnight, and been replaced by a girl who was not my daughter, but, I felt, a stranger’— Pam Stockwell (From the Foreword)

Book excerpt: Thomas Mott Osborne (1859-1926) was an American prison administrator, prison reformer, industrialist, and New York State political reformer, who was so inspired by Donald Lowrie's 1912 book, My Life in Prison, and its call to action concerning prison reform, that he convinced the governor of New York to appoint him chairman of a new State Commission on Prison Reform. Then, on behalf of that commission and to better understand "the prison problem" firsthand, Osborne voluntarily entered Auburn Prison as "Tom Brown," No. 33,333x, for one week in 1913 to live as a prisoner - even going so far as having himself thrown into solitary confinement. The 1914 publication of that electrifying experience, Within Prison Walls, shocked the world and made him the most prominent and respected prison reform crusader of his day.

CHAPTER XIII A NIGHT IN HELL AS Captain Martin and I traverse the long stone passage leading from his office to the death chamber, I listen intently to catch any sound from the jail, for I am wondering whether or not I shall have any companions in misery; but nothing can be heard. Even when the Captain unlocks and opens the door on the right at the end of the passage and I step into the dungeon, there is no indication of any other inhabitants. Except for our own movements the silence is complete, although there is a peculiar reverberation of the vaulted roof which reechoes every sound we make. I am aware of a sort of uncanny feeling about the place, as though there were some sort of living creature--man, ape, or devil--in every cell, with his face close to the bars, peering through and holding his breath. The Captain, going to a locker which is at Jiis left, backing against the iron wall of the first cell, opens it and takes out a shirt, trousers, coat, cap, and a pair of felt shoes. "Take off your clothes and put these on," he says briefly. I take the clothes as he hands them to me and place them upon a bench at my right, where I also sit and proceed to make the required change. If these are the clothes which have been carefully washed and cleaned for me, I should like to examine--at a safe distance--the ordinary ones. They must be filthy beyond words. And I suppose no one but a prisoner ever wonders or cares about the condition of the last man who wore them. I take off my gray uniform, shirt and shoes, and as I stand in my underclothes the Captain feels me all over from head to toes to find out whether I have concealed about me a weapon or instrument of any kind. I presume the idea is to guard against suicide. After I have been...

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The crisis of borders and prisons can be seen starkly in statistics. In 2011 some 1,500 migrants died trying to enter Europe, and the United States deported nearly 400,000 and imprisoned some 2.3 million people--more than at any other time in history. International borders are increasingly militarized places embedded within domestic policing and imprisonment and entwined with expanding prison-industrial complexes. Beyond Walls and Cages offers scholarly and activist perspectives on these issues and explores how the international community can move toward a more humane future. Working at a range of geographic scales and locations, contributors examine concrete and ideological connections among prisons, migration policing and detention, border fortification, and militarization. They challenge the idea that prisons and borders create safety, security, and order, showing that they can be forms of coercive mobility that separate loved ones, disempower communities, and increase shared harms of poverty. Walls and cages can also fortify wealth and power inequalities, racism, and gender and sexual oppression. As governments increasingly rely on criminalization and violent measures of exclusion and containment, strategies for achieving change are essential. Beyond Walls and Cages develops abolitionist, no borders, and decolonial analyses and methods for social change, showing how seemingly disconnected forms of state violence are interconnected. Creating a more just and free world--whether in the Mexico-U.S. borderlands, the Morocco-Spain region, South Africa, Montana, or Philadelphia--requires that people who are most affected become central to building alternatives to global crosscurrents of criminalization and militarization.
