The optimization technique employed is the simulated annealing (SA) algorithm, while the evaluation of design objectives and constraints is handled by coupling to the lattice-physics code CPM-2. The optimization control variables include the "pin-by-pin" placement and/or loading of nuclear fuel, burnable absorbers, or other material regions within a fuel assembly (e.g. water holes, guide tubes, etc.). Also, the designer can "freeze" any given region during the optimization, both in terms of location and/or composition. The objective functions presently available include the minimization of 235U enrichment or the minimization of pin power peaking, both of which can act as constraints to one another (via penalty-based or hard constraints).

This work utilizes one such developed technique of optimization called simulated annealing to produce optimal operation parameters for a 15x15 fuel assembly to be used in an operating nuclear power reactor. The two main cases of optimization are: one that finds the optimal 235U enrichment layout of the fuel pins in the assembly and another that finds both the optimal 235U enrichments where gadolinium burnable absorber pins are also inserted. Both of these optimizations can be performed by coupling Adaptive Simulated Annealing to TransLAT which successfully searches the optimization space for a fuel assembly layout that produces the minimized pin power peaking factor. Within given time constraints this package produces optimal layouts within a given set of assumptions and constraints. Each layout is forced to maintain the fuel assembly average 235U enrichment as a constraint. Reductions in peaking factors that are produced through this method are on the order of 2% to 3% when compared to the baseline results. As with any simulated annealing approach, families of optimal layouts are produced that can be used at the engineer0́9s discretion.

Yaacov Choueka began his research career in the theory of computer science, dealing with basic questions regarding the relation between mathematical logic and automata theory. From formal languages, Yaacov moved to natural languages. He was a founder of natural-language processing in Israel, developing numerous tools for Hebrew. He is best known for his primary role, together with Aviezri Fraenkel, in the development of the Responsa Project, one of the earliest fulltext retrieval systems in the world. More recently, he has headed the Friedberg Genizah Project, which is bringing the treasures of the Cairo Genizah into the Digital Age. This first part of the three-volume set covers a range of topics in computer science. The papers are grouped in topical sections on: the jubilaris: Yaacov and his oeuvre; theory of computation; science computing and tools for engineering; information retrieval.
