Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from With the Indians in France I have not attempted to write a Military History of the Indian Army Corps in France. I lay no claim to describing the course of events on the British Front, as a Whole, during 1914 - 15, except in as far as they concern the Corps. The excellent account written by lieut.-colonel Merewether, Indian Army, and Sir Frederick Smith, Bart. (the Indian Corps in France, published by John Murray), both of Whom served on my Staff as Recording Officers on behalf of the India and War Offices, and who have had at their disposal all the official records, furnishes ample details of the movements and the doings of the Corps as forming an integral part of the British Army in Flanders. I have not had the advantages of papers of reference, nor have I seen all the diaries of the various Commanders and others, and have had the handicap of writing most of my story far removed from England; but it must be borne in mind that a great part of their information was naturally derived from my own reports and correspondence, and of nearly all such I kept copies, and have used them. If, therefore, in some cases our descriptions of military events appear somewhat similar the reason will be readily understood. Also I kept a very careful Diary from day to day which has enabled me to write with certainty of the events recorded. While the Indians were still in the country, I obtained from them many things relating to the past; some of which are confirmed by notes recently collected among the tribe in western Kansas. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Indian Corps in France I AM not at all clear why an Introduction should be needed to this important and thrilling narrative of the deeds of the Indian Corps in France in the early days of the Great War, in addition to the excellent Preface which has already been contributed by the Authors. Still less is it clear Why a remote spectator should have been urged to undertake the task. It can only be because a former Viceroy must have enjoyed many opportunities during his term of. Office in India of making the acquaintance and realizing the superb qualities of the Indian Army, that he should be invited, Or would consent - as I have willingly done - to join in this tribute to their latest achievement. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Our Debt to the Red Man: The French-Indians in the Development of the United States The mixed-blood Indian is so widely regarded with disfavor, owing to the superficial criticism heaped upon him in certain quarters, that Mrs. Houghton's book will make a strong appeal to all fair-minded students of our aboriginal race problem. The too prevalent impression is doubtless based on the fact that, of late years, the natural resources of some Indian reservations have attracted speculative white adventurers, not a few of whom, taking Indian women to wife, have sadly neglected the children born of their union. But, as those of us know who are familiar at first hand with frontier conditions, any such sweeping judgment is unjust; for on every side we meet squawmen who, though uneducated in the ordinary sense, have proved their possession of character and force, and have devoted their best faculties to the improvement of their families and the advancement of the tribes with which they are affiliated. In the volume before us, Mrs. Houghton has largely confined her observations to the Indians who trace their white blood to French sources. Her great store of data is the fruit of a painstaking search of several years through records ancient and modern, official and scientific, religious and literary. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Conrad Weiser: And the Indian Policy of Colonial Pennsylvania During colonial times the French greatly excelled the English in their ability to secure the friendship and the trade of the Indians. The eagerness which characterized the men of New France, as they explored the water-courses searching for new scenes and new lands, was in marked contrast with the conservative English who clustered near the coast and despised Indian affiliations. The French quickly absorbed the Indians' customs and language, and reveled in their metaphorical phrases. Still there has seemed to him to be a place for a book which should out line the story of the great French explorers in such simple, direct fashion as might attract young readers. Trying to meet this need, he has sought to add to the usefulness of the volume by intro ductory chapters, simple in language, but drawn from the best authorities and carefully considered, giving a View of Indian society; also, by insert ing numerous notes on Indian tribal connections, customs, and the like subjects. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Narrative and Critical History of America, Vol. 4: Part II The same spirit was seen pervading France, where the conversion of the Indians of the New World was regarded as a duty of the highest order. One of the first traces that we find of French voyages to the northern coast is the mention in an early edition of the Chronicle of Eusebius, in 1508, that Indians who had been brought from the new-found land received baptism within the walls of a cathedral in France. Though the introduction of Calvinism led to the destruction of many a convent and shrine, and thinned by death the ranks of the mission orders,264 narrative and critical history OF america. Book excerpt: Excerpt from On Two Fronts: Being the Adventures of an Indian Mule Corps in France and Gallipoli This book has been written during a long period of enforced idleness. It makes no claim either to literary or historical merit, but is a plain tale of personal experiences in the War. Having been written almost entirely from memory, assisted only by the briefest of diaries, I fear that it must inevitably contain some inaccuracies for which I ask indulgence. Book excerpt: Excerpt from History of Wisconsin Under the Dominion of France I have been compelled, in many different parts of this volume, to very decidedly dissent from the conclusions reached by that eloquent and indefatigable historian, Parkman, both in his book upon La Salle and that upon the Conspiracy of Pontiac. But this, however much to be regretted, was unavoidable. Mr. Parkman has been amazingly unfortunate in his choice of La Salle as his hero and the chief actor in the discovery of the West. The great est genius, Crippled by such misconceptions, could only attain to distorted and deceptive views. Similarly, although not to the same great extent, his account of the Conspiracy of Pontiac is defective; and that striking passage in Western history remains yet to be described from a point of view which has entirely escaped his notice. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Final French Struggles in India and on the Indian Seas: Including an Account of the Capture of the Isles of France and Bourbon, and Sketches of the Most Eminent Foreign Adventurers in India Up to the Period of That Capture The present work supplies a suppressed chapter of anglo-indian history. It undertakes, that is to say, to describe, in detail, the final struggle of the French, terminating in September, 1788, for empire in Southern India; the successful efforts of the same nation during the wars of the Revolution and the Empire to destroy British commerce in the Indian Seas the suppression of those efforts accomplished by the capture of the Isles of France and Bourbon. It concludes with a sketch of the most famous adventurers who strove, often success fully, to train and discipline on the European model the soldiers of those native princes who, towards the close of the last century, seemed the most likely to come into hostile contact with the British.
