Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Information technology now possesses an all-pervading influence in society: all areas of the social and corporate worlds use IT. However, despite its integral importance in society today, its development and future is often overlooked. This book places IT in perspective by tracing its development through time, covering its origins in business, the massive expansion of the role of IT at the end of the 20th century, the growth of the internet, and the successes and failures of companies involved in this development. Despite its ubiquity in the modern world, the author highlights that efficient use of IT by businesses can only be gained by a good understanding of its potentials and pitfalls, highlighting how its informed use in practice is essential for companies to succeed. Finally, questions are raised concerning the future of IT: who will reap the benefits and why? Will IT continue to provide solutions and will it always deliver on its promise? Will it cease to advance and thus cease to be studied or will it continue to develop and thus provide new opportunities and challenges to users?

Book excerpt: The chapters in this book are an assembly of commentaries by a distinguished team of specialists on the social impact of the Singapore Women's Charter on women and men. The Women's Charter is the main legislation protecting women's rights in the context of the family in Singapore. Highlights of this book include the reasons for the significance of legislation to protect women's rights in marriage; how the legislation came about; case studies from Southeast Asia; how the Singapore Women's Charter evolved and became established; how the Charter goes beyond protecting women's rights by reinforcing men's and women's obligations and duties in a marital partnership; how the Charter has come to be perceived by men and women especially in its enforcement in the context of divorce; and the social repercussions of the Charter on the family in its application. There has been ongoing discussion on the implications of the Charter on the lives of Singaporean women and men for some years since its implementation. The purpose of this book is to enrich our understanding of this legislation further - its objectives, efficacy and shortfalls.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The author has always remembered an incident that occurred during on of the many artillery swing operations. These operations involved two guns in fire support of Special Forces approximately 100 Montagnard positioned along the Cambodian border. The normal artillery battery comprised of six guns positioned in a group to produce overlapping explosive power. However, during these operations, only two guns would be sent out as fire support. The guns and crew along with the Special Forces Cadre would helicoptered out and dropped on a hill (Landing Zone) LZ and remain in place for weeks or months depending upon the situation. The incidences that most haunted the author occurred during the Siege of Special Forces Camp Bu Prang along the Cambodian border. It was these incidents that kept the author always wondering what the meaning of the situation, and how that applied in his life. The culmination to this quest for the meaning happened forty years after the events of that time and inspired the author to write down his experiences and the epiphany about that meaning. The book is a reflection on the author’s experiences with the realization that God has always been with him throughout his life.

Book excerpt: As a healthcare professional, I am with families at some of the lowest moments of their lives. During my time with the Benton family, I witnessed an outpouring of love that was like no other. While caring for Lindsay, our team was touched and forever changed. Mr. Bentons blog has given me a chance to glimpse into his heart and know that I now have a different perspective from which to base the care I offer to patients and their families in the Intensive Care Unit. Neta A. Greenlief, RN, BSN, NE-BC After caring for Lindsay and her family, I found my passion in nursing. Researching and learning ways to allow for medical teams to better connect with their patients and families has become my calling as a nurse. I want all patients and their families to feel that their medical team is not only caring for them but also standing beside them through this journey. Lindsay has inspired me to find ways to see this goal through. Elizabeth Mills, RN, BSN, CCRN Mr. Benton, Your blogs gave great insight and truly show how our love for our children endure forever! Through you, I saw a fathers love grow to the point it poured over into the hearts of others who never even met Ms.Lindsay. What a tremendous testimony Lindsay left for us all! Rodney Pilson, Family Care Coordinator Carolina Donor Services I was one of the nurses privileged to care for Lindsay. The most profound impact for me was Lindsays entire family. The family was the best I have seen in my career and that strength lasted through the entire week of Lindsays stay in my unit. They impressed me with their unity, love and support for one another. That love was like nothing I had ever seen in such a dark time. They drew me into their family and kept me there. This love for me was a guide in reaching out to my own family that had kept themselves at a distance from me and for this I owe a debt of gratitude to Lindsays family. Lindsay was a loved, blessed young lady to have the parents, step-parents, brother and extended family that she had. Deani Gaskins, RN Im not very good at putting my thoughts in words which is what I so appreciate about your blog your words are healing & touches the deepest part of my heart. The learning to live the rest of our lives without our children with us here on earth is more than I thought I would be able to bear but here I am almost 14 years later, living, remembering, loving my daughter that is living and finding joy amongst the tears remembering my sweet boy. This book was released on 2013-01-18 with total page 40 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: John Griffith-Jones is to chair the new Financial Conduct Authority (FCA). Although the FCA is a successor body to the Financial Services Authority (FSA), his is not a continuity role. The Committee believes that the FCA can be radically different from its predecessor under the new chair in at least four respects: He must restore the credibility of the conduct regulator. Although a great deal of time and effort was put into conduct matters, the FSA left consumers exposed to some of the worst scandals in UK financial history. The Committee expects Mr Griffith-Jones and his board to ensure that the new organisation adopts a radically different approach. It is noted that the PRA, which has assumed responsibility for most prudential aspects of the FSA's work, has done this, with its adoption of a move to judgement-based regulation. The FCA has different objectives from the old FSA: as well as having to ensure that markets work well, it has objectives with regard to consumer protection, the integrity of the UK financial system, and competition. The Committee has criticised the complexity of the objectives set out for the FCA in the Financial Services Bill; but Mr Griffith-Jones and the FCA's senior leadership will need to think about the inter-relationship of the FCA's objectives and how meaningfully to fulfil them. The Treasury Committee will engage in an oversight role of the governance at the FCA and with the commitments that Mr Griffith-Jones has made to the Committee, Parliament will expect the new FCA to respond to Treasury Committee requests for information promptly and thoroughly.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: After the last Civil War, America emerged a stronger and more united country that went on to witness major economic growth and become a major force for Democracy around the World. America is currently in a New Cold Civil War, it is at a critical inflection point and faces the most serious threat to its democracy in its history. Its Dynamic Free Market Capitalism has been replaced by Crony Capitalism from Wall Street, which is hobbling the proper allocation of Financial Capital to Main Street, thereby stifling real new business growth. In this political commentary, the author argues that we still do not fully understand the negative effects of convergence and consolidation in information technology. We are also overlooking the fact that the rhetoric in both the social and Main-stream Media are being monopolized by the same special interest groups that funds the Activists and control a majority of information technology companies. While muckraker journalists used to look out for our interests, today the media are mostly in cahoots with the tech companies as well as celebrities, activist judges, corporations, and Wall Street capitalists. As such the American people stand alone with no one on their side except the current President whom they had elected on 8th Nov 2016. With odds stacked against them, do Americans stand a chance? Get the answer to that question and many more, also discover what you can do to protect American democracy and help unchain free market capitalism to drive economic growth in America. In our current environment of emotional hysteria hyped up by the Social and Main-stream Media, this book attempts a facts-based approach, leveraging business management methodologies and discipline to analyze issues and their causations. All derived conclusions are also supported by historical equivalents, fundamental concepts per relevant disciplines, related organizational Cultures and finally the motivations and personal agendas of the participants. This fresh new approach is most interesting as it is neither aligned with the left nor right, an independent, unbiased approach to problem-solving.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: `The Sage Handbook of Organizational Behaviour is a fine addition to past works of reference in the field, edited by two prominent scholars who are internationally known. Its approach is both critical and original in many incisive ways, aspiring to a cutting-edge coverage of the core and periphery of OB. Many of the chapter authors stick their necks out and avoid the more obvious, conventional expositions of their topic. It covers a wide range of topics of potential use to both undergraduate and postgraduate students of the subject, as well as academics, researchers and practitioners. It will be of particular interest to those on MBA and DBA courses. It can be strongly recommended as an essential faculty library purchase, as well as a useful tool for individuals interested in having such a guide to the subject at hand′ - Professor Malcolm Warner, Emeritus Fellow, Wolfson College and Judge Business School, University of Cambridge `This important new Handbook brings together for the first time a collection of major contributions on macro-organizational behaviour. This area of study is concerned with the ways in which the people who inhabit organizations make sense of their situations, contributing to the distinctive character of those organizations through their actions and struggles. The conventional literature, artificially divided between micro organizational behaviour and organization theory, has under-explored this obvious conjunction between people and organizations. Stewart Clegg and Cary Cooper perform a great service in helping to make good the deficiency′ - John Child, Professor of Commerce, Birmingham Business School `Thorough and comprehensive. Thoughtful critique and new insights′ - Chris Argyris, James B. Conant Professor, Emeritus, Harvard University In this second volume of The SAGE Handbook of Organizational Behavior, the focus is on macro-organizational behavior, revealing ways in which the person and group affect the organization. Chapters are written by eminent and upcoming scholars in the field, each presenting on the major issues in organizational behavior as seen with a macro-lens. The Handbook is divided into three parts, the first introducing and framing the field; the second part considering the various organizational processes involved, including learning, teamwork, identity and power, among others, while finally Part Three introduces organizing on a macro-scale, covering topics such as organizational change, design governance and globalization. The SAGE Handbook of Organizational Behavior: Macro Approaches is an essential resource for researchers and students across management and organization studies.

This book was released on 2024-06-18 with total page 7 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This evaluation assesses the decision-making processes that guided the evolution of the application of the Fund's mandate, the criteria and principles used to operationalize engagement in newer policy areas, and the coherence of the Fund's framework for engaging with partners. It finds that the systematic widening of the Fund's areas of work is posing adaptation challenges, necessitating trade-offs, and overburdening staff within a context of budgetary and expertise constraints. The evaluation offers a framework for approaching these challenges that is centered on a trilemma that exposes the tension between the steady expansion of the Fund's scope of work, its limited resources, and the need to maintain the high quality and value-added of its policy advice. It identifies several problems within this framework, including the ad hoc decision-making process for engaging in newer policy areas, which lacks a longer-term strategic anchor. Furthermore, decisions on policies, resources, and risks were taken in a piecemeal manner, without due consideration for crossed effects. It also identifies several open questions regarding the depth and frequency of the Fund's engagement in newer policy areas and the lack of an institutional approach to Fund partnerships. The evaluation proposes classifying newer policy areas across a spectrum of recommended engagement, ranging from signaling their macrocriticality while leaving deeper assessments to other institutions, to in-depth high-frequency engagement. It also offers four main recommendations: (i) developing an inclusive Fund-wide institutional strategy for engagement in newer policy areas that better links decisions related to scope, resources, and risks; (ii) producing budget data that enables the tracking of Fund activities and operations by policy area; (iii) updating the 2022 Guidance Note for Surveillance to enhance the clarity of principles for engagement; and (iv) adopting a Board-approved high-level Statement of Principles for engagement with partners.
