Book excerpt: Excerpt from The History of the South African Forces in France IN the autumn of 1916 I was asked by the Union Government to undertake the official History of the South African Forces in Europe. At the time I was serving in France, and had therefore an opportunity to see something of the Infantry Brigade. For various reasons I was unable to begin the work until after the signing of the Armistice: since which date I have had at my disposal all official papers, and have received the assistance of many South African officers. I desire to express my gratitude to major-general Sir H. T. Lukin, brigadier-general Dawson, brigadier-general Tanner, and the various battalion and battery comman ders for the help they have given me. I would especially thank Major H. P. Mills of the Third Regiment, but for whose unwearying co-operation the book could not have been written. My aim has been to tell as simply as possible the story of a great military achievement, to my mind one of the finest in the whole history of the campaigns; and, at the same time, to provide a detailed account of the operations of the infantry and the other services, which, I trust, may be of interest as a war. Book excerpt: Excerpt from With Roberts to Pretoria: A Tale of the South African War The second phase of the struggle did not afford such ex amples of warfare on a large scale as might have been anticipated. The operations of Lord Methuen for the relief of Kimberley were brought to a standstill by the inadequacy of the comparatively small force under his command for the task of breaking down the Opposition of the Boer army, holding, like that before Ladysmith, a position of immense natural strength. With the advance, however, of the army under General Roberts, resistance on a large scale virtually collapsed. Book excerpt: Excerpt from With the Infantry in South Africa About o'clock word was sent up to us that the Cornwalls were going to charge the position, and when they came 4111 our fellows went with them, but it was futile. The hackneyed expression hail storm of bullets, is no exaggeration of what we were up agamst, so those who had not fallen lay down behind the nearest shelter and just hung on to what had been gained in that mad. Rush where so many had been stricken. There we lay till dark, when the work of picking up the wounded and dead commenced, and was carried 011 throughout the night. On Monday we changed position to Gun Hill. On Tuesday our whole brigade advanced towards the laager in a wide sweeping movement to within about yards. We were under a galling rifle tire and pom-pom fire all afternoon, and retired to Gun Hill about 5 o'clock. Covered by the fire of the naval guns. The bombardment of the laager went on every day and night at inter vals, and it was extremely interesting to watch the effect of the big lyddite shells amongst the waggons and about the trenches. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The French Refugees, at the Cape I have endeavoured in the following pages to give a brief account of the arrival and settlement of the French Refugees at the Cape in the seventeenth century. Their coming was of some importance to the Colony, especially with regard to farming operations. They brought with them a knowledge of viticulture which in no small measure helped to promote and advance the prosperity of the Cape of Good Hope. Further, they were an aid to the general colonization of the place. The Refugees came when there was a want of men with a knowledge of the manufacture of wine and brandy and of the cultivation of olives. The Dutch East India Company had no definite scheme of colonizing its various possessions, but an exception was made as regards the Cape. Emigrants were sent out from time to time during the seventeenth century, and Netherlanders came here at the same time as the French. With regard to the latter, I have dealt in the following pages with matters relating to their settlement at Drakenstein, their church and their language, and have added a list of names of those who came out from 1688 onwards. It is hoped that this list will throw some fresh light on some of those who found a new home here. It has been compiled from a variety of sources, and has taken some years of careful research to complete. A little while ago my attention was drawn to a paper read in 1895 to the Huguenot Society in London by Captain W. H. Hinde, R.E., on "The Huguenot Settlement at the Cape of Good Hope." Annexed to the publication is a list of Huguenot families of the Cape compiled by the late Mr. C. C. de Villiers. Upon comparing it with my list I was pleased to see what I had gathered was in many respects in more detail, especially as to the place of origin and the ships in which some of the Refugees came out. However, a debt of gratitude is due to the late Mr. de Villiers for what he has done for the student interested in genealogical studies of this country. None but those who have undertaken the task of framing such a list can appreciate the labour expended. Every conceivable class of record which might throw some light on the enquiry was examined. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Camp Life and Sport in South Africa: Experiences of Kaffir Warfare With the Cape Mounted Rifles Lous position as a cavalry regiment, to all intents and purposes, though it was only endowed with infantry rank and pay, marked it out as essentially different from any other corps in Her Majesty's service, whilst its mixed Hottentot and European elements, emi uently fitting it for performing with advantage the skirmishing tactics so useful in savage warfare, carried it still further out of the usual category. With regard to the Cape ferce, it has been my wish to exhibit some of the characteristics of the smaller and more rarely described fauna, which, less im portant as regards size and ferocity, and therefore perhaps less sought after by the sportsman, may yet be found interesting to the general reader, as they certainly will be to the naturalist, whose researches.
