Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book Synopsis Science Communication by : Annette Leßmöllmann
Download or read book Science Communication written by Annette Leßmöllmann and published by Walter de Gruyter GmbH & Co KG. This book was released on 2019-12-16 with total page 555 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Science is an essentially cooperative, critical, and dynamic enterprise. Were it not for the continuous creation and improvement of special forms of communication, argumentation, and innovation, all of them suitable for its three key features, scientific knowledge and progress could hardly be achieved. The aim of this volume is to explore the nature of science communication in its several functions, modalities, combinations, and evolution - past, present, and future. One of our objectives is to provide an overview of the richness and variety of elements that take part in performing the complex tasks and fulfilling the functions of science communication. The overall structure and criteria for the choice of topics: 1. The origin and target of a communication episode - its source(s) and addressee(s). 2. The media of communication employed. 3. The thematic field and content types. 4. The distinction between aspects of science communication (e.g., media, texttypes, domains, communicative maxims) and aspects of research on science communication (e.g., the contribution of different research traditions to the understanding of science communication). 5. The history and dynamics of science communication (past, present, and future), both in an empirical perspective (e.g., the development of the research article) and a systematic perspective (e.g., what are basic types and mechanisms of change in science communication).

Book Synopsis Classics in the History of Greek Mathematics by : Jean Christianidis
Download or read book Classics in the History of Greek Mathematics written by Jean Christianidis and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-04-18 with total page 474 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The twentieth century is the period during which the history of Greek mathematics reached its greatest acme. Indeed, it is by no means exaggerated to say that Greek mathematics represents the unique field from the wider domain of the general history of science which was included in the research agenda of so many and so distinguished scholars, from so varied scientific communities (historians of science, historians of philosophy, mathematicians, philologists, philosophers of science, archeologists etc. ), while new scholarship of the highest quality continues to be produced. This volume includes 19 classic papers on the history of Greek mathematics that were published during the entire 20th century and affected significantly the state of the art of this field. It is divided into six self-contained sections, each one with its own editor, who had the responsibility for the selection of the papers that are republished in the section, and who wrote the introduction of the section. It constitutes a kind of a Reader book which is today, one century after the first publications of Tannery, Zeuthen, Heath and the other outstanding figures of the end of the 19th and the beg- ning of 20th century, rather timely in many respects.

Book Synopsis Writings of Early Scholars in the Ancient Near East, Egypt, Rome, and Greece by : Annette Imhausen
Download or read book Writings of Early Scholars in the Ancient Near East, Egypt, Rome, and Greece written by Annette Imhausen and published by Walter de Gruyter. This book was released on 2010-11-19 with total page 451 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Medicine, astronomy, dealing with numbers ‐ even the cultures of the “pre-modern” world offer a rich spectrum of scientific texts. But how are they best translated? Is it sufficient to translate the sources into modern scientific language, and thereby, above all, to identify their deficits? Or would it be better to adopt the perspective of the sources themselves, strange as they are, only for them not to be properly understood by modern readers? Renowned representatives of various disciplines and traditions present a controversial and constructive discussion of these problems.

Book Synopsis The Golden Age of Polish Philosophy by : Sandra Lapointe
Download or read book The Golden Age of Polish Philosophy written by Sandra Lapointe and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2009-05-19 with total page 251 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Jan Wolenski ́ and Sandra Lapointe Polish philosophy goes back to the 13th century, when Witelo, famous for his works in optics and the metaphysics of light, lived and worked in Silesia. Yet, Poland’s academic life only really began after the University of Cracow was founded in 1364 – its development was interrupted by the sudden death of King Kazimierz III, but it was re-established in 1400. The main currents of classical scholastic thought like Thomism, Scottism or Ockhamism had been late – about a century – to come to Poland and they had a considerable impact on the budding Polish philosophical scene. The controversy between the via antiqua and the via moderna was hotly 1 debated. Intellectuals deliberated on the issues of concilliarism (whether the C- mon Council has priority over the Pope) and curialism (whether the Bishop of Rome has priority over the Common Council). On the whole, the situation had at least two remarkable features. Firstly, Polish philosophy was pluralistic, and remained so, since its very beginning. But it was also eclectic, which might explain why it aimed to a large extent at achieving a compromise between rival views. Secondly, given the shortcomings of the political system of the time as well as external pr- sure by an increasingly hegemonic Germany, thinkers were very much interested in political matters. Poland was a stronghold of political thought (mostly inclined towards concilliarism) and Polish political thought distinguished itself in Europe J.
Book Synopsis Von Ursachen sprechen. Eine aitiologische Spurensuche. Telling origins. On the lookout for aetiology by : Christiane Reitz

This book was released on 2014-12-31 with total page 585 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Telling origins and telling of origins – our volume brings together studies of a wide range of texts: the Old and New Testaments, technical writing, literary, historiographical and documentary texts from antiquity to the modern age, and even the Marseillaise. All contributors deal with the following questions: how are stories about origins told? Can we identify common patterns for the ways in which aitia are established and shaped in individual genres, types of texts, images, scientific and literary contexts? Can we distinguish the development of narrative structures specific to aetiology? Which patterns of recognition do stories of origins, whether in scientific, fictional or visual contexts, offer to their intended recipients? Myth, persuasion, history, speech and knowledge: in each of these spheres the search for an aetiological core proves fruitful.
