Book excerpt: Master story teller Charlie Elliott says it perfectly in this book for all fishermen: “Whether you are a fresh water Walton or the owner of a yacht, plowing the depths beyond the sight of land for a long-billed monster of the sea, you are seeking out the quiet aquatic spaces of the earth for a reason more compelling than to satisfy your stomach juices. “Whenever you assemble your tackler, there are latent questions in your mind. What adventure awaits you just beyond the river bend, or when you beach your boat where the forest marches down to meet the laek? What delightful memory will you bring home, or what bizarre hair graying thrill could encounter you unexpectedly where the water trails run out and stop? “Those are not the only reasons you fish, by any stretch of nylon thread. Whether you are out for salmon or for lunker bass, of grayling or bonefish, your premeditated design of the day calls for out-thinking, out- maneuvering and then out-battling some wary old mossback of the depths or shallows. But as an adjunct to this high ideal, you are also seeking many other things which add immeasurably more to your day than meant on your table. You’re looking for sunshine on the water, the refrigerated glades, the bonds of friendship between strong men. Your diversions of the day include a hundred adventures not listed in a fishing guide.”

ISLAND STRIPERS is a result of the author's 45 years of fishing Block Island's waters and his offered contentions supported by science. This effort is filled with insights into its history and unique geology, its tides and currents, early native fishing, updates in striper biology and evolution, detailed day and night, surf and boat angling, striper diseases, major action spots and techniques, popular baits, recent record-breaking fish, fly and surf fishing interviews, forage species, various tagging agencies, results of his striper tagging, vessels used, and much, much more.... Early in 2012 he was selected for induction into the IGFA's World Fishing Hall of Fame, a result of his career tagging nearly 60,000 documented game fish for science, thanks to help from clients and friends. Of these 43,000 were striped bass for the American Littoral Society (ALS), the remainder for the National Marine Fisheries Service (NMFS), which included bluefin tuna, various billfish and shark species. Back in 2011 SPORTFISHING magazine commenced their annual Making A Difference (MAD) Campaign, to identify fifty individuals nationwide who made significant contributions to sport fishing. Capt. Al Anderson was announced as one of their five winners. He is a well-known New England charter skipper, author, lecturer and conservationist, long recognized for his ethic of marking game fish for science.

Book excerpt: When Julian Thomas arrived home that night, as usual, his wife Chris, was depressed and in a drunken fog. To avoid her rage and rejection, he stayed away, reclining on the couch watching the Johnny Carson Show. He was contemplating the life between him and his wife...if only for my own sanity, I have to tell her, if not tonight, tomorrow morning for sure. Minutes later, he heard her say something from the bedroom. It sounded like... maybe...goodbye. Then came the sound of a single gunshot, it broke the silence like a clap of thunder. OVER THE EDGE is the suspenseful account of the true story of a Susan Haywardlookalike living during the tumult of California in the 1960s-1970s- a beautiful, intelligent, but troubled woman who shot herself - and her husband who tried in vain to help her.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the poetry collection Verse-A-Tell-It, about love, self-love, and life experiences, author Adrian Ray Evans also painted the art illustrated in the book. Evans was born in a farmhouse in Western Kentucky during the Great Depression. A recovering alcoholic since December 1983, he is retired from his own house painting business, Adrian Custom House Painters of Orlando, Florida, where he lived and worked for forty years. After retirement, he and his wife returned to his hometown of Owensboro, Kentucky in 2012, to be near ailing family members and to spend the remaining years of their lives. The author still uses his brush to please and beautify the world with his oil paintings, creating landscapes, seascapes, stills, and abstracts under the pseudonym “Arts by Adrian R.” Primarily a self-taught artist, several of his paintings have won ribbons. One of his abstract paintings titled “EVIL,” received wide acclaim depicting the attack on the World Trade Center. He has completed over 500 paintings, some of which can be “liked” on Facebook under Adrian Ray Evans. A veteran of the U.S. Navy, Evans served during the Korean Conflict in the early 1950s as a radio operator aboard the USS Fessenden, DER 142. The Fessenden was a World War II destroyer escort, converted into a radar picket ship for the Korean War, when it patrolled a portion of the U.S. Eastern North Atlantic shores. After Korea, it was scuttled in Pearl Harbor Bay to be an artificial reef. Woeful Wisdom (Outskirts Press) was Evans’ first book, which was intended to help other alcoholics by telling about his own experiences and recovery.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The focus is on Martha’s Vineyard but the information, fishing tips, and stories about Island characters—Bob “Hawkeye” Jacobs jumping off Memorial Wharf to unsnag an albie he hooked—will sound familiar to anyone who has spent time in a community of fishermen. This informative and fun read answers the questions asked in local tackle shops, including the best spots to catch a striped bass on a fly rod—Lobsterville Beach—and rigging tackle for blues, fluke, black sea bass, false albacore, and bonito. Spin fishing, bottom fishing, and fly fishing are all covered. This book follows the island fishing seasons: rods appear on island trucks in April, a sign that schoolies have arrived, and they do not begin to disappear until the venerable Bass and Bluefish Derby, five weeks of single-minded pursuit of fish, ends in October. And there are tips on looking and talking the part . . . “handy phrases include any reference to a falling or rising tide and a rock, any rock, as long as you refer to it with a sense of authority so that the other person is unwilling to ask which rock for fear of seeming like a novice.” Martha’s Vineyard Fish Tales is a “how to” book that flows with the character and personality of a fishing-obsessed island off the coast of Massachusetts.
