Book excerpt: Wisdom from Pooh Corner, Alice's Looking Glass, and Other Unlikely Places is a book for adults who like to think deep thoughts but still enjoy the stories of their youth. It digs down into some wonderful and well known stories, children's stories, and myths to unearth wisdom lessons buried within them. We mightn't think to look for messages about spiritual friendship in The Tales of Winnie-the-Pooh, about self-confidence in The Wonderful Wizard of Oz, or about discouragement in Tolstoy's The Tired Swan, but there they are nevertheless, just waiting for a little imagination on your part. So come along with me and let's take a look. You'll enjoy revisiting these lovely old stories and may just learn a few things along the way, things you hadn't realized were tucked away in there!

Book excerpt: This unique reference work chronicles the interconnected histories of Britain’s NRA and the British Railways Companies. The National Rifle Association of the United Kingdom was founded in the mid-nineteenth century and was granted a Royal Charter of Incorporation by Queen Victoria in 1890. Created for the encouragement of the Volunteer Rifle Corps and the promotion of rifle shooting throughout Great Britain, its popularity soon influenced the development of railway expansion. The London and South Western Railway Company even built unique tramways to connect the NRA’s camps and ranges. This book sheds light on the fascinating relationship between the NRA and the British Railways Companies. Beginning in the 1860s, the NRA held annual marksmanship competition at Wimbledon Common, a site chosen for its accessibility from across the existing railway network. The NRA later established its new home at Bisley Camp in Surrey, some 35 miles outside London. The L&SWR built a spur from Brookwood Station and offered a discount on return fair to uniformed volunteers.

Book excerpt: "Wisdom's Children is an inspired guide to the needs of today's children many of whom simply do not respond to our current educational system. Reading this information brings greater understanding and healing." Dr. Christiane Northrup author of Mother-Daughter Wisdom (Bantam, 2005), The Wisdom of Menopause (Bantam, 2001), and Women's Bodies, Women's Wisdom (Bantam, 1998) While in meditation, I sensed the familiar urging of my inner voice, and reached for a pen "Children are arriving in vast numbers to assist in the crossover to an enlightened age. They are a new prototype of human being, and their 'soul' purpose is to help humanity return to love." Wisdom's Children describes a new generation of highly sensitive children whose heightened vibration and consciousness can bring about a transformation in the hearts of humanity. It blends metaphysical information the author received intuitively with her experiences as a teacher and a parent. She has witnessed the beauty of these children as they struggle to adapt to a world and an outmoded educational system that doesn't recognize their expanded perceptions and abilities. "The young beings among you carry an intuitive knowledge of universal truth and reflect your deepest longing as spiritual beings: to live in harmony with each other and the earth."

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Steven Rozenski reopens old discussions and addresses new ones concerning late medieval devotional texts, particularly those showing continental and German influences. For many, Martin Luther’s translation of the Bible into German has come to define the spirit of the Protestant Reformation. But there existed a host of devotional and mystical writings translated into the vernacular that had more profound impacts upon lay religious practices and experiences well into the seventeenth century. Steven Rozenski explores this devotional and mystical literature in his focused study of English translations and adaptations of the works of Henry Suso, Catherine of Siena, and Thomas à Kempis, and the common devotional culture manifested in the work of Richard Rolle. In Wisdom’s Journey, Rozenski examines the forms and strategies of late medieval translation, of early modern engagement with Continental medieval devotion, and of the latter’s literary afterlives in English-speaking communities. Suso’s Rhineland mysticism, the book shows, found initial widespread influence, translation, and adaptation followed by a gradual decline; Catherine of Siena’s Italian spirituality saw continued use and retranslation in post-Reformation recusant communities paralleled by vehement denunciation by English Protestants; and Thomas à Kempis’s Imitation of Christ attained a remarkably consistent expansion of popularity, translation, and acceptance among both Catholic and Protestant readers well into the nineteenth and twentieth centuries. Wisdom’s Journey traces this path as it reshapes our understanding of English devotional and mystical literature from the 1400s to the 1600s, illuminating its wider European context before and after the Reformations of the sixteenth century. Written primarily for scholars in medieval mysticism, Reformation studies, and translation studies, the book will also appeal to readers interested in medieval studies and English literature more broadly.
