Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Wisdom and Will in Education We can not get along with the women; but (after a pause) I suppose we can not get along without them. This remark was made to me many years ago by a fellow teacher after a somewhat stormy altercation with one of his female patrons who had been endeavoring to instruct him in the rights and privileges of her children. It has often seemed to me since, when I have recalled the quota tion, that with a slight change it is applicable to our pres ent social conditions. Everybody realizes that we can not get along without education; yet many intelligent per sons are reiterating that education is not accomplishing what may be justly expected of it. If the putting in practice of a rational system of instruction were entirely in the hands of teachers we should doubtless see a rapid advance toward so desirable a goal. But in democratic communities where almost everybody has something to say about what is to be done and how it is to be done, especially in matters that concern or are supposed to con cern every man, woman and child, progress in popular edu cation can, in the nature of the case, move forward no faster than progress in general enlightenment. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Citizens to Be: A Social Study of Health, Wisdom and Goodness With Special Reference, to Elementary Schools The effort of these pages is a threefold effort of reconciliation - first, to suggest a closer fellowship between the company of social workers and the company of teachers, and to win a wider recognition of the identity of the aims of both; secondly, within the educational ideal, to unite the often contrasted purposes of vocational and liberal, primary and secondary, individual and civic, secular and religious education; thirdly, to foreshadow the attainment, hastened through such a fellowship and such an education, of wider and deeper life-unities - the merging of the ideals of aristocracy and democracy in a better social order, and the fulfilment of the national ideal in the international, as Humanism pursues its inevitable upward course towards its own transcendence. The conviction compelling the effort is that the realisation of these several purposes is to be sought either in their reconciliation or nowhere. And if the attempt to comprehend so much within a single aim is daring, yet it is not so reckless, in view of the whole Humanist tradition, as the attempt to work or think on these matters in isolation. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A History of Education Inasmuch as the element of authority continues throughout all history as a necessary strand of civiliza tion, it follows that Oriental civilization has important lessons for all people, even the most democratic. The net result of the life of the race must be summed up and given to the child, so that he shall be saved from repeating the errors that had to be lived through before the wisdom expressed by the ethical code could be generalized. Implicit obedience has to be the first lesson for the child. How he shall gradually become endowed with self-control, and finally have the free management of all his affairs, is the further problem of the educational system. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: . Renewal of Life by Transmission. The most notable distinction between living and inanimate things is that the former maintain themselves by renewal. A stone when struck resists. If its resistance is greater than the force of the blow struck, it remains outwardly unchanged. Otherwise, it is shattered into smaller bits. Never does the stone attempt to react in such a way that it may maintain itself against the blow, much less so as to render the blow a contributing factor to its own continued action. While the living thing may easily be crushed by superior force, it none the less tries to turn the energies which act upon it into means of its own further existence. If it cannot do so, it does not just split into smaller pieces (at least in the higher forms of life), but loses its identity as a living thing. As long as it endures, it struggles to use surrounding energies in its own behalf. It uses light, air, moisture, and the material of soil. To say that it uses them is to say that it turns them into means of its own conservation. As long as it is growing, the energy it expends in thus turning the environment to account is more than compensated for by the return it gets: it grows. Understanding the word "control" in this sense, it may be said that a living being is one that subjugates and controls for its own continued activity the energies that would otherwise use it up. Life is a self-renewing process through action upon the environment.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from Modern Educators and Their Ideals The present work is intended mainly for students of pedagogy in colleges or normal schools, teachers and other practical workers in educational fields, and those parents who take a special interest in the problems of education. It aims to give a general idea of the educational views of great philosophers and reformers in modern times, which form the basis of the present-day education in its ideals and practice. The author's endeavor has been to present the fundamental ideas of these thinkers and epoch makers in a concise and coherent form, and with a sympathetic interpretation. An academic criticism or amplification of any theories is purposely avoided; and very little is added to what each writer has said for himself, beyond that which was found necessary to make the connection of thought clearer and its significance more comprehensible to the reader. Thus the book practically consists of excerpts from the main works of the thinkers here chosen, which are either put in their original form or modified by the author so as to meet the extent and intent of the book. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Education as Growth: Or the Culture of Character; A Book for Teachers' Reading Circles, Normal Classes, and Individual Teachers Perhaps no sane person ever lived to be fifty years of age without wishing at least once that he could live his life over again, bringing back to his youth the experience of his maturity. Realizing that this is impossible for himself, he earnestly desires that his children, and, if his sympathies are broad, other young people, shall become wise ere it is too late to profit by their wisdom. But in his anxiety for the young he frequently mistakes knowledge for wisdom; and in his theory of education he is liable to leave out of account that growth or development of the soul which alone makes a person capable of using aright his treasures of acquired learning. This little book is devoted to a discussion of the best ways of attaining sound character through the process of acquiring an education under the discipline of the school and other institutions of civilization. Many good resolutions of silence made and confirmed during thirty years of school-work, as every hope of a public character which brightened the early days was destroyed, have been broken by the appearance of this book. Success only strengthened the conviction that it was useless to speak; and yet when the conviction seemed strongest some folly has swept it away. Or is it instinct, like the prescient idiotcy of the butterfly, that lays its eggs on cabbage leaf, or nettle, forced by a blind impulse to thwart its own experience, and deposit part of its life where no sign warrants an idea that it will be allowed to live? And, in what way can and ought education be distinctively Christian? These are a few of the probing questions for which this book seeks answers. Among other contributions, Currivean's book explores a biblical philosophy of Christian education with unprecedented breadth and depth. To accomplish this objective, it considers what education is (chapter 1), what philosophy of education is (chapter 2), and what the ultimate goal of education is (chapter 3). Additionally, this book provides a never-before, Christian overview of twelve philosophies of education (chapters 4-15). Each of those chapters provides an introduction of a particular philosophy of education and some of that philosophy's exemplars. Each of those chapters also contributes a constructive, Christian critique. Chapter 16 highlights a biblical philosophy of Christian education--featuring some people, some principles, and some priorities for a biblical philosophy of Christian education, viz. pursuing excellence for the glory of God.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Goose-Step: A Study of American Education Six hundred thousand young people are attending col leges and universities in America. They are the pick Of our coming generation; they are the future of our coun try. If they are Wisely and soundly taught, America will be great and happy; if they are misguided and mistaught, no power can save us. What is the so-called higher education of these United States? You have taken it, for the most part, on faith. It is Something which has come to be; it is big and impressive, and you are impressed. Every year you pay a hundred million dollars Of public funds to help maintain it, and half that amount in tuition fees for your sons and daughters. You take it for granted that this money is honestly and wisely used; that the students are getting the best, the highest education the money can buy. Suppose I were to tell you that this educational machine has been stolen? That a bandit crew have got hold Of it and have set it to work, not for your benefit, nor the benefit of your sons and daughters, but for ends very far from these? That our six hundred thousand young people are being taught, deliberately and Of set pur pose, not wisdom but folly, not justice but greed, not free dom but slavery, not love but hate? Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Explores the nature and role of wisdom in education. Modern scholarship has struggled to come to terms with the meaning of wisdom and its significance in the field of education. This book examines the importance of pursuing wisdom in schools by turning to ancient and medieval sources for clarification concerning the nature of wisdom. Sean Steel argues that our current emphasis on the development of rigorous critical-analytic thinking skills, on assessment, and on accountability in education has negatively impacted the ability of schools to foster an environment in which both students and teachers might pursue wisdom. Although in recent times efforts have been made to incorporate the pursuit of wisdom into schools through Philosophy for Children (P4C) and contemplative education programming, such initiatives have missed their mark. Steel therefore recommends not more accountability in education for the purpose of ensuring global competitiveness, but rather the institutional promotion of periods of leisure or schole in the school day. Drawing upon his own experiences as a teacher who has tried to encourage students to search for wisdom, the author discusses some of the challenges and pitfalls of wisdom seeking. He also offers examples of various wisdom-seeking activities that might bear fruit in the classroom.
