Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Immigrant Fictions is a groundbreaking collection that brings together studies of world literature, book history, narrative theory, and the contemporary novel to challenge methods of critical reading based on national models of literary culture. Contributors suggest that contemporary novels by immigrant writers need to be read across several geographies of production, circulation, and translation. Analyzing work by David Peace, George Lamming, Caryl Phillips, Iva Pekarkova, Yan Geling, Theresa Hak Kyung Cha, Anchee Min, and Monica Ali, these essays take up a range of critical topics, including the transnational book and the migrant writer, the comparative reception history of postcolonial fiction, transnational criticism and Asian-American literature in the U. S., mobility and feminism in translation, linguistic mediation and immigrating fictions, migration and the politics of narrative form.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Both passionate and artful, learned and bawdy, Catullus is one of the best-known and critically significant poets from classical antiquity. An intriguing aspect of his poetry that has been neglected by scholars is his interest in silence, from the pauses that shape everyday conversation to linguistic taboos and cultural suppressions and the absolute silence of death. In Silence in Catullus, Benjamin Eldon Stevens offers fresh readings of this Roman poet's most important works, focusing on his purposeful evocations of silence. This deep and varied "poetics of silence" takes on many forms in Catullus's poetic corpus: underscoring the lyricism of his poetry; highlighting themes of desire, immortality-in-culture, and decay; accenting its structures and rhythms; and, Stevens suggests, even articulating underlying philosophies. Combining classical philological methods, contemporary approaches to silence in modern literature, and the most recent Catullan scholarship, this imaginative examination of Catullus offers a new interpretation of one of the ancient world's most influential and inimitable voices.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this groundbreaking work, Patrice D. Rankine asserts that the classics need not be a mark of Eurocentrism, as they have long been considered. Instead, the classical tradition can be part of a self-conscious, prideful approach to African American culture, esthetics, and identity. Ulysses in Black demonstrates that, similar to their white counterparts, African American authors have been students of classical languages, literature, and mythologies by such writers as Homer, Euripides, and Seneca. Ulysses in Black closely analyzes classical themes (the nature of love and its relationship to the social, Dionysus in myth as a parallel to the black protagonist in the American scene, misplaced Ulyssean manhood) as seen in the works of such African American writers as Ralph Ellison, Toni Morrison, and Countee Cullen. Rankine finds that the merging of a black esthetic with the classics—contrary to expectations throughout American culture—has often been a radical addressing of concerns including violence against blacks, racism, and oppression. Ultimately, this unique study of black classicism becomes an exploration of America’s broader cultural integrity, one that is inclusive and historic. Outstanding Academic Title, Choice Magazine

Book excerpt: Focusing on Zola Neale Hurston, Paule Marshall, Toni Morrison, Alice Walker, and Toni Cade Bambara, this book explores both the ways in which black women's fictions have been shaped by the history of the United states, and the ways in which they intervene in that history. She sees the transition from an agrarian to an urban society as the critical moment of that history, and argues that writings by black women articulate that change in their content as well as form. CHAPTER IV IRVING The first production of an American author to gain general recognition in England as a work of pure literature was the Sketch Book of Washington Irving. Some of Franklin's writings were, it is true, widely read; but Franklin was thought of as a statesman and a scientist, rather than as a literary man. The works of Charles Brockden Brown attracted some slight attention when they were first published, but their greatest vogue in England came later. Some American works on theology, many on politics, and some on science, travel, and exploration were well known in England, but none made its way solely because of its literary merit. Irving, himself, had been mentioned in England before the Sketch Book. A London reprint of Salmagundi had appeared in 1811, and had been made the subject of a long article in the Monthly Review. Scott had praised the Knickerbocker's History in 1813,1 though so far as is known it was not reviewed by any British journal until after the advent of the Sketch Book. Irving came to England in 1815, shortly after the close of the War. At first he was occupied in business, though he found time to meet a number of men of letters, notably Campbell and Scott. It was not until late in 1818 that he again turned his attention to writing; and the first part of the Sk tch Book, containing four pieces, was not published in America until May, 1819. Copies must have found their way to England with reasonable promptness. The author apparently first saw his own work in print some time in July. In the issue for August 24s the Kaleidoscope, or Literary and Scientific Mirror, See the author's British Criticisms of American Writings, 1783-1815, pp. 84-86, 13.
