Book excerpt: Wire & Fire, award-winning jewelry artisan Kaska Firor's collaboration with her daughter, designer Katherine Firor Colque, is a collection of stunning wire and metal projects with an artisan flair! The book combines traditional wire-wrapping techniques like weaving and coiling with torch-based techniques, including forging, sawing, shaping and soldering wire, making a bezel, and creating wire prongs. Combining these styles opens up a world of design possibilities for sophisticated wire jewelry. The 15 earrings, pendants, rings, bracelets, and other projects are fresh, bold, contemporary, and totally unique. Wire & Fire is ideal for intermediate wireworkers who are familiar with wire-wrapping techniques and interested in using a torch with wire to create polished, intricate jewelry. The projects incorporate easy-to-find copper or silver wire with other elements. Each technique is explained with step-by-step instructions and photos, and the softcover book includes a gallery of gorgeous pieces for even more inspiration.

Book excerpt: Fire can fascinate, inspire, capture the imagination and bring families and communities together. It has the ability to amaze, energise and touch something deep inside all of us. For thousands of years, at every corner of the globe, humans have been huddling around fires: from the basic and primitive essentials of light, heat, energy and cooking, through to modern living, fire plays a central role in all of our lives. The ability to accurately and quickly light a fire is one of the most important skills anyone setting off on a wilderness adventure could possess, yet very little has been written about it. Through his narrative Hume also meditates on the wider topics surrounding fire and how it shapes the world around us.

Book excerpt: The guardians of our electrical safety have let us down. Aluminum wiring is a skeleton in the closet that left a trail of fatalities, injury, destruction and a latent hazard in millions of homes. It helped launch the Consumer Product Safety Commission and put a damper on TV investigative reporting. You'll see the many ways that a "self-regulating" industry protected itself while putting its end-user customers at risk. The catastrophic fire at the Beverly Hills Supper Club in Southgate, Kentucky in 1977 resulted in 165 fatalities. About 2,400 people were in the building. People came to hear John Davidson sing, to have dinner and to attend a variety of functions, including meetings and a wedding reception. This fire ranks high among the major civilian fire losses of the 20th century. Lawsuits followed. An aluminum wire connection failure was alleged to be the cause of the fire. Thirty-six companies in the electrical industry defended their products and their actions against claims that the aluminum wiring system they marketed was inherently dangerous, that they had conspired to market it in spite of their knowledge of the hazard and that they failed to warn the public. Information from that litigation tells the story of a self-regulating industry that managed an electrical fire safety problem to protect itself and not the public. Once in motion, the marketing of aluminum wiring was a rolling stone that could not be stopped by well-intended individuals in the companies that were involved. The industry's standards and practices were not equal to the task. Corporate interests and individual careers were protected at the expense of public safety.

Doidge’s book is a remarkable and hopeful portrait of the endless adaptability of the human brain.”—Oliver Sacks, MD, author of The Man Who Mistook His Wife for a Hat What is neuroplasticity? Is it possible to change your brain? Norman Doidge’s inspiring guide to the new brain science explains all of this and more An astonishing new science called neuroplasticity is overthrowing the centuries-old notion that the human brain is immutable, and proving that it is, in fact, possible to change your brain. Psychoanalyst, Norman Doidge, M.D., traveled the country to meet both the brilliant scientists championing neuroplasticity, its healing powers, and the people whose lives they’ve transformed—people whose mental limitations, brain damage or brain trauma were seen as unalterable. We see a woman born with half a brain that rewired itself to work as a whole, blind people who learn to see, learning disorders cured, IQs raised, aging brains rejuvenated, stroke patients learning to speak, children with cerebral palsy learning to move with more grace, depression and anxiety disorders successfully treated, and lifelong character traits changed. Using these marvelous stories to probe mysteries of the body, emotion, love, sex, culture, and education, Dr. Doidge has written an immensely moving, inspiring book that will permanently alter the way we look at our brains, human nature, and human potential.

Book excerpt: With New York Times bestselling author, Dr. Hanson's four steps, you can counterbalance your brain's negativity bias and learn to hardwire happiness in only a few minutes each day. Why is it easier to ruminate over hurt feelings than it is to bask in the warmth of being appreciated? Because your brain evolved to learn quickly from bad experiences and slowly from good ones, but you can change this. Life isn’t easy, and having a brain wired to take in the bad and ignore the good makes us worried, irritated, and stressed, instead of confident, secure, and happy. But each day is filled with opportunities to build inner strengths and Dr. Rick Hanson, an acclaimed clinical psychologist, shows what you can do to override the brain’s default pessimism. Hardwiring Happiness lays out a simple method that uses the hidden power of everyday experiences to build new neural structures full of happiness, love, confidence, and peace. You’ll learn to see through the lies your brain tells you. Dr. Hanson’s four steps build strengths into your brain to make contentment and a powerful sense of resilience the new normal. In just minutes a day, you can transform your brain into a refuge and power center of calm and happiness.

Book excerpt: In this riveting, action-packed novel from award-winning author Will Hobbs, a teenage boy hoping to help his loved ones must fight for his life as he makes the dangerous journey across the Mexican border into the United States. When falling crop prices threaten his family with starvation, fifteen-year-old Victor Flores heads north in an attempt to "cross the wire" from Mexico into America so he can find work and help ease the finances at home. But with no coyote money to pay the smugglers who sneak illegal workers across the border, Victor struggles to survive as he jumps trains, stows away on trucks, and hikes grueling miles through the Arizona desert. Victor's passage is fraught with freezing cold, scorching heat, hunger, and dead ends. It's a gauntlet run by many attempting to cross the border, but few make it. Through Victor's desperate perseverance, Will Hobbs brings to life a story that is true for many, polarizing for some, but life-changing for all who read it. Acclaim for Crossing the Wire includes the following: New York Public Library Books for the Teen Age, Junior Library Guild Selection, Americas Awards Commended Title, Heartland Award, Southwest Book Award, and Notable Books for Global Society.

Book excerpt: This riveting nonfiction picture book biography explores both the failures and successes of self-taught engineer Emma Lilian Todd as she tackles one of the greatest challenges of the early 1900s: designing an airplane. Emma Lilian Todd's mind was always soaring--she loved to solve problems. Lilian tinkered and fiddled with all sorts of objects, turning dreams into useful inventions. As a child, she took apart and reassembled clocks to figure out how they worked. As an adult, typing up patents at the U.S. Patent Office, Lilian built the inventions in her mind, including many designs for flying machines. However, they all seemed too impractical. Lilian knew she could design one that worked. She took inspiration from both nature and her many failures, driving herself to perfect the design that would eventually successfully fly. Illustrator Tracy Subisak's art brings to life author Kirsten W. Larson's story of this little-known but important engineer.
