Gen has plans to open a ladies' gaming establishment, and while she's saddled with London's biggest ne'er do well, he has to make himself useful. In exchange for her aid, the marquess must help her gain the ladylike polish she requires to lure in her lucrative clientele. Max, Marquess of Sundenbury, is the undisputed black sheep of his family. With his gambling debts mounting and a ducal father who has cut off the purse strings, he needs to reform his reputation and find a wealthy bride. His plan? Take a month away from society, give the wagging tongues time to settle down, then reemerge a changed man, and all that folderol. But he never bargained for the hellion in breeches who amazes him with her sharp wit, sharper tongue, and undeniable beauty. Gen wants nothing to do with a handsome scoundrel like Max, no matter how sinful his kisses or tempting his embrace. Download or read book Winter's Song written by TD Mischke and published by Skywater Publishing Cooperative. This book was released on 2023-10-15 with total page 155 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Winter's Song celebrates the intimate, intense relationship Americans living in the northern Midwest have with the season. Many see it as a cold, drab, and miserable time of the year sprinkled with warm holiday spices and a yearning to fly south. Yet the book invites us into the lives of the hearty people of the north, born with ice in their veins, who accept and even embrace winter like it’s a member of the family. While the other seasons have their place among the pages, winter takes center stage and is depicted like a fantastic and familiar Nordic realm, one that has profoundly influenced and shaped the people of the north. From amusing stories of winter driving, unique fashions, and the inspiring experiences of children, to the effect winter has on spirituality, the health benefits of the cold, and the outsized role of the meteorologist, Mischke paints the season with whimsical humor, breathtaking beauty, ancient lore, and cultural touchstones. But Winter’s Song is more than a collection of heart-warming stories of those living in the north. It holds a frosty mirror up to their lives and examines their determination to weather the season and the abundant joy they receive from it. Only living there, can one find deeper meaning in the fluttering snow, the sparkles cast from sun-lit icicles, and the twinkling darkness overhead at night. Winter's Song isn’t just a hymn. It’s an ode that elevates the season to a living breathing presence and passes its rich rewards to those who invite it in.

Book Synopsis Retracing a Winter's Journey by : Susan Youens
Download or read book Retracing a Winter's Journey written by Susan Youens and published by Cornell University Press. This book was released on 2013-01-14 with total page 348 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: I like these songs better than all the rest, and someday you will too, Franz Schubert told the friends who were the first to hear his song cycle, Winterreise. These lieder have always found admiring audiences, but the poetry he chose to set them to has been widely regarded as weak and trivial. In Retracing a Winter's Journey, Susan Youens looks not only at Schubert's music but at the poetry, drawn from the works of Wilhelm Müller, who once wrote in his diary, "perhaps there is a kindred spirit somewhere who will hear the tunes behind the words and give them back to me!" Youens maintains that Müller, in depicting the wanderings of the alienated lover, produced poetry that was simple but not simple-minded, poetry that embraced simplicity as part of its meaning. In her view, Müller used the ruder folk forms to give his verse greater immediacy, to convey more powerfully the wanderer's complex inner state. Youens addresses many different aspects of Winterreise: the cultural milieu to which it belonged, the genesis of both the poetry and the music, Schubert's transformation of poetic cycle into music, the philosophical dimension of the work, and its musical structure.

Download or read book Winter US Edition written by Adam Gopnik and published by House of Anansi. This book was released on 2011-08-24 with total page 224 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The 2011 CBC Massey Lectures celebrates fifty years with bestselling author, essayist, cultural observer, and famed New Yorker contributor Adam Gopnik, whose subject is winter -- the season, the space, the cycle. Gopnik takes us on an intimate tour of the artists, poets, composers, writers, explorers, scientists, and thinkers, who helped shape a new and modern idea of winter. Here we learn how a poem by William Cowper heralds the arrival of the middle class; how snow science leads to existential questions of God and our place in the world; how the race to the poles marks the human drive to imprint meaning on a blank space. Gopnik’s kaleidoscopic work ends in the present day, when he traverses the underground city in Montreal, pondering the future of Northern culture. A stunningly beautiful meditation buoyed by Gopnik’s trademark gentle wit, Winter is at once an enchanting homage to an idea of a season and a captivating journey through the modern imagination. This deluxe 50th anniversary edition includes full-colour images printed on two 8-page inserts.

Book Synopsis Winter Carnival by : Dartmouth College
Download or read book Winter Carnival written by Dartmouth College and published by UPNE. This book was released on 2010 with total page 129 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Avidly collected and fetching high prices at auction, the Dartmouth Winter Carnival poster is a treasured and tangible artifact of one of the College's most cherished traditions. Here, presented for the first time, is Dartmouth College Library's definitive collection of Winter Carnival posters from 1911 to 2010, celebrating Dartmouth's seasonal bacchanal, sports fest, and social daze. In addition to their merit as markers of changing taste in graphic arts, the posters offer a fascinating glimpse into a century of intense cultural and institutional development. As a sustained collection the posters are nearly unrivaled, to the envy of ephemera collectors. Everything is here, from the high-end, design-informed style of the early years to the pop-culture and annual-theme inspired posters of more recent years. A constant element is the effervescence of those Dartmouth days, tinged with the glow of nostalgia: youth, energy, sex, sports, camaraderie, and dragons. This colorful and memory-evoking volume also includes a catalogue raisonn giving poster dimensions, artists' names, and other relevant information; charming artistic ephemera (dance cards and programs) from the missing (posterless?) years of 1912 to 1934; and rare photos of the poster selection process. In addition, the book includes an illustrated essay retelling the story of Budd Schulberg and F. Scott Fitzgerald's notorious trip to Winter Carnival; an essay about the art of the posters by noted graphic arts scholar Steven Heller; and a poignant piece by alumna and cultural observer Gina Barreca (class of '79) remembering the posters and the Winter Carnival experience from a student's point of view. This is a wonderful book for alumni, collectors of posters and ski posters, and anyone who has ever been touched by the magic of Winter Carnival.
