Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Division II: Aerodynamics, Volume 7: Wing Theory in Supersonic Flow examines the cases of isolated simple wings, wings with vertical plane tail, cruciform wings, and simple or cruciform wings fitted with a body. This book presents the method for the actual calculation of isolated wings or of more complex system. Organized into 12 chapters, this volume starts with an overview of the basic equations in the mechanics of inviscid fluids. This text then presents a unified theory that is established for angularly shaped wings in supersonic flow. Other chapters consider the method for calculating the characteristics of drag, lift, and moments for various shapes of the trailing edge line. This book discusses as well the wings of ordinary shapes, delta wings, yawed wings, polygonal wings, trapezoid wings, and arrow-head or swept-back wings. The final chapter deals with a delta wing with a central fusiform body. This book is a valuable resource for teachers, students, and specialists engaged in modern aerodynamics.

Book excerpt: A method is developed, consistent with the assumptions of small perturbation theory, which provides a means of determining for a known load distribution, the downwash behind a wing in supersonic flow. THe analysis is based upon the use of supersonic doublets which are distributed over the plan form and wake of the wing in a manner determined from the wing loading.

Jones surveys the aerodynamics of wings from the early theories of lift to modern theoretical developments. This work covers the behavior of wings at both low and high speeds, including the range from very low Reynolds numbers to the determination of minimum drag at supersonic speed. Emphasizing analytical techniques, Wing Theory provides invaluable physical principles and insights for advanced students, professors, and aeronautical engineers, as well as for scientists involved in computational approaches to the subject. This book is based on over forty years of theoretical and practical work performed by the author and other leading researchers in the field of aerodynamics. Originally published in 1990. Book excerpt: The damping in roll of cruciform delta wings in supersonic flow has been evaluated by means of small-disturbance (linearized) wing theory; both subsonic and supersonic component stream velocities normal to the leading edges have been considered. In addition, some known two-dimensional results for rotating multibladed laminae have been applied to obtain the loading when the number of panels is changed from four to an arbitrary number, under the restriction of low aspect ratio; the damping in roll has been determined explicitly for three panels. Finally, the damping for an inifinite number of panels has been evaluated without restriction as to aspect ratio or Mach number.

This book was released on 1947 with total page 50 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This paper constitutes a theoretical study of the aerodynamic forces on an oscillating or steady wing of finite span moving forward at a uniform supersonic speed. The treatment is based on the linearized theory obtained by considering only small disturbances in an ideal fluid. The wing is therefore considered to be a nearly flat thin surface at a small angle of attack and the flow is considered non- viscous and free of strong shocks. The theory in this case is equivalent to finding certain solutions of the wave equation in three dimensions with respect to a moving coordinate system.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Amid a welter of topics on the aeronautical engineering curriculum-hypersonic fluid mechanics, heat transfer, nonequilibrium phenomena, etc.-this concise text stands out as a rigorous, classroom-tested treatment of classical aerodynamic theory-indispensable background for aeronautical engineers and the foundation of current and future research. The present volume is also unique for its recognition of matched asymptotic expansions as a unifying framework for introducing boundary-value problems of external flow over thin wings and bodies. In addition, the book fully acknowledges the important role of high-speed computers in aerodynamics. After a short review of the fundamentals of fluid mechanics, the authors offer a fairly extensive treatment of constant-density inviscid flow. Chapter 3 deals with singular perturbation problems, presenting an extremely useful technique not to be found in most texts. Subsequent chapters give solid basic coverage of these topics: Chap. 4-Effects of Viscosity Chap. 5-Thin-Wing Theory Chap. 6-Siender-Body Theory Chap. 7-Three-Dimensional Wings in Steady, Subsonic Flow Chap. 8-Three-Dimensional Thin Wings in Steady Supersonic Flow Chap. 9-Drag at Supersonic Speeds Chap. 10-Use of Flow-Reversal Theorems in Drag Minimization Problems Chap. 11-Interference and Nonplanar Lifting Surface theories Chap. 12-Transonic Small-Disturbance Flow Chap. 13-Unsteady Flow Ideal as a primary or supplementary text at the graduate level, Aerodynamics of Wings and Bodies also offers working engineers a valuable reference to the resultsof modern aerodynamic research and a selection of new and useful analytical tools. Holt Ashley is Professor of Aeronautics/ Astronautics and Mechanical Engineering at Stanford University. Marten Landahl is in the Department of Aeronautics and Astronautics at M.I.T. and in the Department of Mechanics, The Royal Institute of Technology, Stockholm.

Book excerpt: This report describes a theoretical method for estimating the aerodynamic loading on a wing-body configuration. In order to provide a basis for evaluation of the method, experimental measurements of surface pressures, forces, and moments were made on a series of basic wing-body configurations over a Mach number range from 2.5 to 4.5. Comparison of the theoretical estimates with these experimental data generally indicated good agreement for the entire range of configurations and test conditions.

Book excerpt: A theory is developed for the airfoil of finite span at supersonic speed analogous to the Prandtl airfoil theory of 1918-1919 for incompressible flow. In addition to the profile and induced drags, account must be taken at supersonic flow of still another drag, namely, the wave drag, which is independent of the wing aspect ratio. Both wave and induced drags are proportional to the square of the lift and depend on the Mach number, that is, the ratio of flight to sound speed. In general, in the case of supersonic flow, the drag-lift ratio is considerably less favorable than is the case for incompressible flow. Among others the following examples are considered: 1) lifting line with constant lift distribution (horseshoe vortex); 2) computation of wave and induced drag and the twist of a trapezoidal wing of constant lift density; 3) computation of the lift distribution and drag of an untwisted rectangular wing.
