He promised it to Israel's patriarchs when speaking of the promised land. The Jewish men who searched the land of Caanan brought back large bunches of grapes to show the people, as they reported on the land. God mentions it many times in the Old Testament as a staple of their diet, along with corn and oil. The English word that translates the 5 Hebrew words that refer to this fruit of the vine is "wine", a word that was generic when the Old Testament was translated into English. This means that it applied to either fresh grape juice or grape juice that was turned alcoholic by adding yeast. The fact of its generic meaning is true and vital to the proper understanding of God's teaching about grape juice and alcoholic wine. Thus, in the Bible we have revealed two wines: unfermented grape juice and alcoholic wine. In the present time in Christian America, the truth that "wine" is generic in the Bible is little taught, largely unknown, and greatly contested. "Wine" is generally understood as an alcoholic beverage. Instead of accepting the "two-wine" understanding, writers deny the historic truth about unfermented grape juice in Bible times and use the Bible to permit and encourage drinking alcohol moderately. We will carefully examine the facts about "wine" in the Bible in the light of God's Word and we will document the danger of consumption of alcohol today. We will also tell a little-known story about Godly men who fought to show the truth of "two-wines" over 100 years ago so that they could convince Christians of the necessity of abstinence.

Book excerpt: The significance of wine in ancient Palestine is demonstrated by the wine installations in archaeological sites and the role wine plays in the Hebrew Bible. However, there has been little or no thorough research as to which words and passages should be investigated to comprehensively examine wine in the Hebrew Bible. In addition, those studies which do exist do not demonstrate any in-depth knowledge of wine production and its implications in translating and interpreting the Hebrew Bible. This work aims to start to address these two issues. The work introduces the tools for examining wine words in ancient Hebrew: history of wine; agriculture and diet; linguistic tools; and the styles and production methods of alcoholic beverages in the ancient world. The core of this work is an examination of the key words related to wine: the likely members of the ancient Hebrew semantic field of wine; and the key words for grape, vine, vineyard and installations used in wine production. The book is addressed to those interested in Hebrew Bible, ancient Palestine, linguistics and wine history.

Book excerpt: Today many believers have been led astray and are in bondage, because they have been fed on the old wine - the traditions of men that have accumulated in Christendom through twenty centuries, and that have been added to God's Word, or that have replaced God's Word. When the new wine is offered to them, they say, "The old is good enough" (Luke 5:39). This they remain in spiritual stagnation, year after year. Most Christians are unwilling to give up the traditions of their elders, even when they see these to be clearly contrary to the teaching of God's Word. We need to come back to the faith that was revealed by God to His holy apostles and prophets, as recorded in the New Testament Scriptures, if we are to fulfil God's purpose in our day and age. To come back to that, we must be willing to do violence to every tradition of man that is contrary to God's Word (Matthew 11:12). This book will change your life and your ministry, because it will question many 'sacred' ideas that you have held that have no foundation in God's Word. That in turn will save you from regret and loss when you stand before the judgment seat of Christ to give an account of your life to Him. He who has an open mind and a bold heart, let him read on...
