Download or read book The Drunkard written by Liu Yichang and published by The Chinese University of Hong Kong Press. This book was released on 2021-01-15 with total page 300 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Drunkard is one of the first full-length stream-of-consciousness novels written in Chinese. It has been called the Hong Kong Novel, and was first published in 1962 as a serial in a Hong Kong evening paper. As the unnamed Narrator, a writer at odds with a philistine world, sinks to his drunken nadir, his plight can be seen to represent that of a whole intelligentsia, a whole culture, degraded by the brutal forces of history: the Second Sino-Japanese War and the rampant capitalism of post-war Hong Kong. The often surrealistic description of the Narrator's inexorable descent through the seedy bars and night-clubs of Hong Kong, of his numerous encounters with dance-girls and his ever more desperate bouts of drinking, is counterpointed by a series of wide-ranging literary essays, analysing the Chinese classical tradition, the popular culture of China and the West, and the modernist movement in Western and Chinese literature. The ambiance of Hong Kong in the early 1960s is graphically evoked in this powerful and poignant novel, which takes the reader to the very heart of Hong Kong. Hong Kong director Freddie Wong made a fine film version of the novel in 2004.

Book excerpt: Hate, pain, divorce, jealousy, and low self-esteem is not only a nightmare for the one who's going through it, but it is also a nightmare for the children that has to see it. Jewels struggles with the fact that she had everything that a thirteen-year-old girl could ever want: loving parents and a big house on the hill, and in a blink of an eye, her life begins to change. She woke up to words of hate being said to her father and ran toward the voices. All she could see was her mother picking up a vase and throwing it at her father. She ran to her room and screamed. Her mother follows her, Jewels looks into her eyes and with words, no mother ever wants to hear, she says, "I hate you!" All Tracie could do was fall to her knees and began to cry. Unlike Jewels, Tracie was bored with her lifestyle. She had everything she ever wanted, a hardworking husband who provided her with everything she wanted and needed, a loving daughter, and a beautiful home, but all that wasn't enough, she was still missing something, and she couldn't put her finger on it. Will a brother ever get a break? Mike thought. I work my butt off providing for my family and I find out that my wife is not the same person from high school. The doctor walks up to me and said, "Your wife almost overdosed on cocaine." I couldn't believe what I was hearing. Cocaine, I thought, when did she start doing cocaine and how could I not have known. We all go through things on this journey we call life and our choices determine our destination. Are you ready to explore the choices that Jewels, Tracie, and Mike have made?
Book Synopsis No End in Sight by : Charles Ferguson
Download or read book No End in Sight written by Charles Ferguson and published by PublicAffairs. This book was released on 2009-02-23 with total page 674 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The first book of its kind to chronicle the reasons behind Iraq's descent into guerilla war, warlord rule, criminality, and anarchy, No End In Sight is a shocking story of wholesale incompetence, recklessness, and venality. Culled from over 200 hours of footage collected for the film, the book provides a candid and alarming retelling of the events following the fall of Baghdad in 2003 by high ranking officials, Iraqi civilians, American soldiers, and prominent analysts. Together, these voices reveal the principal errors of U.S. policy that largely created the insurgency and chaos that engulf Iraq today -- and what we could and should do about them now. No End In Sight marks the first time Americans will be allowed inside the White House, Pentagon, and Baghdad's Green Zone to understand for themselves the disintegration of Iraq -- and how arrogance and ignorance turned a military victory into a seemingly endless and deepening nightmare of a war.

Book excerpt: A Shakespeare-loving criminologist investigates a tragic case of murder in a “fast-paced tale that gets both the intellect and the heart racing” (Louise Penny, author of Still Life and Dead Cold). A Halifax criminologist, Rosalind has an unquenchable love of drama. Perhaps that’s why she continues to work for the cranky private investigator McBride. Over the years, their association has led her from one sordid foray to another in the world of crime. But when real-world drama gets to be too much, she escapes into the world of theater. Lately Ros has been helping a company of local actors put on a small production of Hamlet. She finds the poetic language a perfect distraction from her job . . . until uncanny parallels between life and art become too unnerving to ignore. When environmental lawyer Peter King suddenly, his son Daniel suspects murder. As Roz and McBride delve deeper into the case, it becomes all too clear that there are those who will stop at nothing to ensure their foul deeds stay buried.
