Book Synopsis Windmills of New England by : Daniel Lombardo
Download or read book Windmills of New England written by Daniel Lombardo and published by . This book was released on 2003 with total page 280 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: With an almost quixotic dedication to his subject, Dan Lombardo has scoured countrysides, seasides and archives in a quest to comprehend the fascinating history and exciting future of the windmills of New England. Combing a fun approach with scholarly rigor, he examines the many ways windmills revolutionized the lives of our ancestors, just as modern wind power is now poised to change local and perhaps even world politics. Indeed, with wind farms now producing electricity at prices that are highly competitive with all other sources?and generating ?electrical? controversies in the local and national news?this book could not be any more timely. Lombardo takes his readers along with him on a journey to the antique remains of wooden windmills to meet the people who care for and treasure them. He introduces us to young apprentices learning to grind corn, artists using windmills as studios, and even an engineer who single-handedly operates a major modern electric wind farm.Lombardo explores the powerful poetic and literary uses of windmills, their imagery in film, their impact on language, and their place in popular culture, such as in residential and commercial architecture, as lawn ornaments, and as perennial obstacles on mini-golf courses. Along the way, he has collected more than 160 photographs, vintage postcards and other renderings. This invaluable volume is complete with online and other resources, a useful index, and a series of windmill tours to assist readers with their own windmill adventures.
Download or read book Windmills written by Richard Leslie Hills and published by . This book was released on 2005 with total page 216 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This highly informative book contains some 500 black and white photographs of the various types of windmills and describes their main uses; many of the photographs have not been published before. People do not always realise how much of an influence windmills had on the life and productivity in the world prior to steam. Windmills were not just used in corn milling but for land drainage (here and in The Netherlands); in saw mills, mustard milling, papermaking; oil and colour mills, chalk grinding, flax and barley mills: There is a gazetteer of British windmills and some foreign ones, and a comprehensive glossary and bibliography.

Book Synopsis Power from Wind by : Richard Leslie Hills
Download or read book Power from Wind written by Richard Leslie Hills and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 1996-09-12 with total page 340 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The wind is a fickle source of power. Windspeeds are frequently too low to be of any practical use, so that windpower has generally remained a marginal resource. Since the inception of windpower around 1000 AD, technology has been deployed to obtain the most economical power from wind. The author traces its technical evolution, concentrating on the growth in understanding of wind and charting crucial developments in windmill design. The history of the windmill is focused on North Western Europe, drawing on the origins of the first horizontal windmills in Persia, Tibet and China. Industrial applications such as in textiles, papermaking and mining are examined. Gradually, windmills were improved but were finally eclipsed by steam engines in the nineteenth century due to increased levels of industrialisation. The book concludes with a look at the recent re-emergence of windpower as a viable source of power in the wake of the energy crisis.
