Book excerpt: A new generation of built-up roofs, known as Adhesive Applied Roofing Systems (AARS), is gaining popularity in North America for low slope application. AARS use no fasteners for components' attachment and all components (e.g., insulation board, cover board, and membranes) are integrated by application of adhesives. Since there are no metal fasteners, AARS can offer advantages of reduction in moisture migration and thermal bridging. Moisture in the roof envelope can lead generally to material deterioration, structural integrity problems, and the growth of mould. Even though AARS are in commercial use, there is no existing test standard to quantify their wind uplift performance. A new project, "Development of Wind Uplift Standard for Adhesive Applied Low Slope Roofing Systems," has been initiated in collaboration with industries, university, and the Canadian Government. The project has three major tasks: experimental investigation, formulation of a numerical model, and development of wind design guide and standard. Task 1 completes preliminary investigations by constructing eight mock-ups. All mock-ups had steel deck and polyisocyanurate insulation and varied in adhesives (type, quantity, and application method), cover boards, and membranes. Mock-ups were subjected to both static and dynamic wind loading conditions. Experimental data showed similarity in failure modes and variations in wind uplift ratings. Data show that among the mockups, the weakest link varied depending on the type of adhesives used and component arrangements. This paper presents and discusses the data from this ongoing experimental investigation.

All components of the AARS are integrated using adhesive and unlike mechanically attached roofing systems, there are no fasteners used. Thus, an AARS can offer less thermal bridging, air intrusion, air leakage, moisture migration, and corrosion problems. The components are, however, subjected to the combined action of tensile and shearing forces due to the dynamic wind uplift action as a result of wind flow suction over a low-slope roof. As part of an ongoing collaboration between industries, universities, and government departments to quantify the wind uplift resistance standards of the AARS, three different testing methods have been successfully developed: (1) uplift resistance testing, (2) peel resistance testing, and (3) wind uplift testing. Small scale specimens were used for the uplift and peel resistance testing, whereas wind uplift investigations were performed using full-scale mock-ups. This paper focuses on a proposed correlation amongst these three different test methods, namely, "Higher resistance in both peel and uplift tests will result in the same or higher wind uplift resistance." Four different scenarios of two sets of samples each were constructed by varying only one component between the samples. All samples were tested in all three tests methods and data from these tests were compared to verify the proposed correlation. The test results obtained from the small-scale experiments proved to be useful to predict full-scale system behavior as demonstrated in the paper through comparison of the resistance data and failure modes.

Book excerpt: Adhesive applied roofing systems (AARS), a new generation of built-up roofs, are gaining popularity in North American low slope application. AARS uses no fasteners and all components (e.g., deck, vapour barrier, insulation board, and membrane) are integrated by the use of adhesives. As there are no metal fasteners, AARS can offer an advantage of reduction in condensation and thermal bridges for the roof assemblies. Even though, AARS have been in use, there have been no standard that exists to quantify its wind uplift performances. An industries-university-Canadian government collaborative research project, "Development of Wind Uplift Standard for Adhesive Applied Low Slope Roofing System," has been initiated with three major tasks: Experimental investigation, formulation of a numerical model and development of wind design guide and standards. This paper documents a standardized small scale laboratory test method for the quantification of uplift resistance subject to tensile loading. As part of Task 1 of the project, this systematic investigation focuses on three key parameters: Loading rate, specimen size and end condition. The investigations were completed by constructing over 400 specimens. Both the maximum uplift resistance and the consistence in the failure plane are equally considered during the test method standardization. The data from this small scale testing can facilitate roofing industries to optimize the material combinations such that the uplift resistance data can be used as an indicator before performing a full-scale wind uplift testing.

Book excerpt: Adhesive Applied Roofing System (AARS)s are regaining popularity in the Canadian low slope application. AARSs use no fasteners. All components (e.g., steel deck, vapour barrier (if any), insulation board, cover board, base sheet, and cap sheet) are integrated using cold adhesives and presented as a new generation of Built-Up Roofs. As there are no metal fasteners, AARSs can offer an advantage of a reduction in the moisture migration and thermal bridges of the roof assemblies. Moisture in the roof envelope can lead generally to material deterioration, structural integrity problems, and the growth of mould. Even though AARSs have been in use, existing uplift standards do not certify them for wind uplift performances. A new project, the "Development of Wind Uplift Standard for Adhesive Applied Low Slope Roofing System," has been initiated in collaboration with industries, universities, and government departments. The project has three major tasks: Experimental investigation, formulation of a numerical model, and development of wind design guide and standards. This paper documents a segment of the findings from this project. Under Task 1, investigations were completed by constructing over 600 specimens constructed using cold adhesives and examining the peel resistance of bonded roofing components through mechanical separation of bonded layers by applying shear forces. These specimens use the insulation and the cover board components exclusively because they are more vulnerable to peeling under shear forces. Based on this scrutiny, three key parameters; namely, peel position, peel angle, and specimen size were optimized. This paper presents the findings and development of a standardized test method to determine the peel resistance of AARS specimens.

Alhawamdeh and published by . This book was released on 2020 with total page 92 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Light-frame wood residential buildings are highly susceptible to damage caused by severe wind events such as hurricanes and tornados. Roof failures in residential buildings are commonly observed due to weaknesses of or missing connections. Roof-to-wall connections not only have significant influences on roof performance but also affect building resistance due to their critical role of transferring wind loads to the wall system and ultimately to the foundation. Roof fails when it has no sufficient wind uplift resistance due to improper selection or installation of construction materials (including fasteners) and strength degradation due to aging or long service. Toenailing is commonly used in roof connections, which was found to be inadequate in high-wind areas. One approach to improve roof performance is to use metal connectors in roof connections. However, it was found out that such an approach may result in a water leak due to fasteners' holes, weakening the substrate, and being susceptible to wind-induced fatigue damage. Elastomeric adhesives have been increasingly applied in civil engineering construction due to its ease of installation, long service life, environmental stability, cost-effectiveness, and better bonding performance over continuous interfaces and increase stiffness. The goal of this dissertation is, therefore, to enhance the performance of light-frame wood construction to resist the adverse effects of extreme wind events through developing an affordable, efficient, long-service, and nonintrusive roof connections using elastomeric adhesives (i.e., polyurethane and polyether). Specifically, their research tasks are carried out: (i) experimentally evaluate wind uplift resistance of the proposed adhesive connections using the monotonic uplift loading tests; (ii) experimentally evaluate the wind-induced fatigue performance of the connections under the fatigue cyclic loading tests; and (iii) numerically evaluate a three-dimensional roof structure with the adhesive connections under uniform and ASCE design wind pressures. The results from the monotonic tests show that the addition of adhesives significantly increases the uplift load capacity by (200%-460%) and energy dissipation by (200%-750%). The fatigue loading tests consist of both constant amplitude and realistic varying amplitude cyclic loadings. These tests' results show that adding adhesives to connections significantly increases the endurance limit by 250~330%. From the numerical analysis, it is observed that the three-dimensional gable roof structure using adhesive connections has reduced roof sheathing stresses (200~400%) and deformations by 200% under uniform uplift pressure. Moreover, the adhesive roof structure can resist a Category 4 wind speed (130-156 mph) per the ASCE 7-16 specification.
